A space that, endowed with thousands of routes, shows us some of its greatest treasures. We must mention that, although we include this article under the umbrella of“routes in Euskadi“, “routes in Euskadi to do with children” or“family routes in Euskadi“, we also mention some routes in Navarre. A natural paradise that we recommend you to visit. We invite you to read all of them and make your own choice. Surely you will find one that has everything you ask for your perfect route. By the way, this list is not ordered by province or by location, but by our own personal tastes, from the ones we like the most to the ones we like the least. Now it’s your turn, enjoy! road, Ullibarri Gamboa reservoir route

Berganzo water route.

We start the list of family routes of Euskadi with what for us is one of the most beautiful and less known, the water route of Berganzo. A very quiet route, in which the water of the Inglares river and the bed of the old channel of the hydroelectric plant, represent one of the biggest attractions. Never a name of a route has had so much sense as in this case. And it is that the water represents one more signpost on the way. To follow the water is to follow the path. In addition, in summer, the different wells that are created in the Inglares riverbed invite you to cool off, while the greenery of everything that surrounds it makes us relax completely. Thus, leaving behind all the problems and stress that we carry with us from the big cities.

Route from Donostia to Pasaia.

Donostia San Sebastian and Pasaia are two of the most striking and epic places in Gipuzkoa. In addition to being two of the most beautiful places in Euskadi, they also have a great history behind them. Legends of whalers, intrepid fishermen, are today put in value in Albaola. A museum / factory in which a replica of a 16th century whaler is being built as it was in the past, manually, without automatisms. Respecting every aspect of our great maritime legacy. A history that fills the hearts of all the people who visit it with passion. Leaving Albaola aside, we recommend you to enjoy the cliffs that separate Donostia and Pasaia, a coastal route that illuminates the emblematic lighthouse of La Plata. Another of the attractions of the route.

  • Attractions: Cliffs, lighthouses, museums and charming towns.
  • Duration: Between 1:30 and 2:30, depending on our origin.

  • More information: Faro de la plata, route Ulia – Pasaia.
  • Location: Donostia San Sebastian – Pasaia, Gipuzkoa.

Route of the Salto del Nervión.

The Salto del Nervión represents the largest waterfall in the entire peninsula. A waterfall that, although it does not always have water, leaves everyone who visits it speechless. As if this were not enough, the different routes that we find in its surroundings, make it one of the most visited areas by families looking to escape from the large urban centers. A place full of peace, which invites us to walk among beech and oak trees. We must remember that the Salto del Nervión has a large influx of people in summer, we recommend avoiding dates indicated if you want to enjoy a nice outdoor experience.

Route along the coast of Donostia San Sebastian.

The coast of Donostia San Sebastian, gives us a luxury route between beaches and mountains. Captained by the beach of La Concha and protected by the mountains of Igeldo, Urgull and Ulia, the route along the coast of the capital of Gipuzkoa is a luxury for the senses. A nice way to get to know one of the most beautiful cities in the Basque Country. This route is perfect to know the 3 mountains that surround Donostia San Sebastian, the 3 viewpoints of the city. A perfect complement for those who want to turn this route into a family plan to spend the day and know some of the most magical corners of this urban center.

Getxo Armintza Route.

One of the longest routes of all that we show you in this article. A route that can be divided into different sections for those who do not wish to invest so much time in walking through our land. On the other hand, the fact that it is one of the most longitudinal routes, also helps to find a greater number of tourist attractions along the way. A fact that helps, and a lot, when choosing the route to be done by Euskadi. In this case, we find in our way such epic places as the Bizkaia Bridge, the old port of Algorta, Aixerrota Mill, Punta Galea Lighthouse, Punta Galea Fort, the cliffs of Barrika, more than 10 beaches and coves, the port of Plentzia and a long etcetera.

Route through Urgull.

Urgull, one of the three aforementioned mountains, is one of the main protagonists of the coast of Gipuzkoa. A historical space, in which the castle of La Mota, the battery of the ladies or the cemetery of the English give us unique views from where we can see the city from a bird’s eye view. Due to the number of paths that are scattered throughout this epic Basque mountain, we can say that it is a perfect place to walk and enjoy the city at the same time. A place of leisure, which, in summer, gives us one of the most striking bars in the city, the polvorín. We recommend you to walk all the slopes of Mount Urgull, the perspectives of Donostia San Sebastian are totally different. Prepare your camera, the panoramic views are simply breathtaking.

Route to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe.

This route needs no introduction. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe has become one of the most visited places by people visiting Euskadi. A pilgrimage point, located near Bakio, less than 30 minutes from the center of Bilbao, allows us to enjoy another of the attractions of Euskadi, its txakoli. Bakio, known throughout the Basque Country for its great txakoli gorri, the red txakoli of Bizkaia, is home to several wineries and the Txakolingunea, the museum of this great Basque wine. Two highly recommended visits. As if this incentive were not enough, we must give a little joy to all the followers of the series of fire and ice, as San Juan de Gaztelugatxe was one of the scenes of Game of Thrones in Euskadi. Those who can not cope with the various architectural obstacles found along this route, can visit San Juan de Gaztelugatxe by boat, from the sea. The company Hegaluze, based in Bermeo, has regular routes that take us to the vicinity of this emblematic place of the Basque coast.

Route through Itxina.

The Itxina massif is undoubtedly one of the most mysterious areas of the Basque Country. A place where everything around us has a very familiar aspect, a route where it is easy to get lost if we do not follow the road signs. But don’t worry, if you follow the signs, you will find a very pleasant family route with many surprises. A route with a great effort – reward ratio. During this route we will enjoy such emblematic spaces as Pagomakurre, the Eye of Atxulaur, Kargaleku or the Campas de Arraba. Places that we are sure that you will love. We ask you to be very careful on foggy days, as Itxina can be a bit cumbersome. Otherwise, there is only room for fun and enjoyment.

Ojo de Atxulaur, Itxina, Gorbeia

  • Note: Several families have told us that they have gotten lost on this route. For now we suggest not to do it with children.
  • Attractions: Impressive landscapes and breathtaking views.
  • Duration: Between 2 and 4 hours, depending on whether we turn off to see the Supelegor cave.
  • Length: 14 km.
  • More information: Route through Gorbeia: Pagomakurre, Ojo de Atxulaur, Campas de Arraba.
  • Location: Gorbeia Natural Park, Bizkaia.

Route through the Irati forest.

The Irati Forest, the second largest and most beautiful beech – fir forest in Europe offers several routes while enjoying its charms. Many of them meet the premises of all the routes that we present today: pleasant routes, with little sacrifice and very grateful. In this case, in this section we include 4 family routes through the Navarre Pyrenees. We recommend reading our article on the Irati Forest so that you do not miss anything of this incredible natural paradise. After enjoying the different routes that we propose, we recommend you to visit the different urban centers that we find in the surroundings. Of course, do not forget its gastronomy, especially the local products, the so demanded products of km 0.

Source of the Urederra.

The source of the Urederra is one of those places that are not easily forgotten. A space where the water takes truly amazing tones. An amazing route wherever we look at it. And it is that, although at first the river Urederra does not accompany us on our journey, if it does in more than 70% of its totality. Located in the bottom of a valley, in the interior of the Natural Park of Urbasa Andía, in the term of Baquedano, this route takes us to know the source of the Urederra. One of the most visited places in Navarre, together with the Palace of Olite. Currently, there is an online system through which you must reserve a place before going. A platform, of which you have more information in the article that we have indicated a few lines above. Recommended reading. If this walk is not enough for you, we recommend that you explore the different routes offered by the Urbasa Andia Natural Park, although they do not have the attraction of the route we present here, they have many other charms.

Arrazola Greenway.

In this case we walk along the old railway track of Arrazola under the watchful eye of Mari, one of the most important mythological beings of Euskadi. The Anboto mountain, one of the most emblematic of our land, is, according to legend, home of Mari. This greenway has a stone and dirt track that runs practically without any inclination between forests, farmhouses and mountains. This makes this route a great choice for those who are looking for routes to do in Euskadi with children.

Greenway of Arrazola in Axpe Atxondo

Itsaslur Greenway.

The Itsaslur Greenway takes us to know the western coast of Bizkaia. One of the most emblematic areas of the mining sector in Euskadi. In this case, the route leads us between the cliffs of Muskiz, an area where once stood the only open sea ore loading dock in Bizkaia. And the fact is that loading ore on a ship without the protection of a dock or port to protect the vessel from the scourge of the sea was an isolated event in Bizkaia at that time. As a curiosity, it is worth mentioning that part of the different “mountains” that we find along the way are not such, but rubble. Residues of the old metallurgical processes. What we know as “slag”. For all those people who do not know the meaning of this term, it is used to recognize those useless elements obtained after the exploitation of the mineral. Some elements that are found in every smelting process of metallurgy and that we can see in person during the guided visit to the forge El Pobal. The Arena beach is another of the spaces that accompany us during the tour. A huge sandy area, located between the municipalities of Zierbena and Muskiz, less than 15 minutes from the capital of Bizkaia, has become one of the busiest beaches near Bilbao. Nearby we find great tourist attractions such as the Muñatones Castle, the El Pobal Ironworks or the Loizaga Tower, a nice range of spaces that we recommend you to visit. You will not regret it.

Itsaslur greenway, Pobeña Kobaron route

Ullibarri Gamboa reservoir route.

Due to the location of the province of Araba, in the interior, we can not enjoy large cliffs, but we can not, nor should we say, that it has no beach. And the fact is that the different marshes and reservoirs that we find scattered throughout its interior, give us sandy beaches that have nothing to envy to those found on the coast. Spaces that also allow us to make tours in which water and nature represent some of its greatest attractions. This is the case of the Ullibarri Gamboa reservoir, a body of water that allows us to walk around its perimeter comfortably thanks to the various walkways and trails that have incorporated the Provincial Council of Araba. In summer, when the youngest members of the family have more energy and the weather is good, a bike route around the Ullibarri Gamboa reservoir can be a perfect plan before enjoying its waters. A route that can be complemented perfectly with any of the activities that its capital, Vitoria Gasteiz, has in store for us.

Route through the Urdaibai marshes.

Urdaibai, one of the most important and striking natural sites of Bizkaia, invites us to walk among its marshes. A walk that joins the urban centers of Gernika and Kortezubi by means of a walk of little difficulty. Very close to this route we find other tourist attractions such as the Oma Forest, Urdaibai Bird Center, Arteaga Castle or the beaches of Laida and Laga. Spaces of great beauty that we recommend you to visit with your eyes closed. Urdaibai was declared a Unesco Biosphere Reserve in 1984, an argument more than enough to consider this area of Euskadi as an idyllic place to walk with the family. During this route through Euskadi we will enjoy the marshes of the Oka river, the protection of the Oiz mountain, the roar of the Cantabrian sea and the urban centers of Gernika and Kortezubi. If you have time, we recommend visiting the nearby towns of Mundaka, Bermeo, Elantxobe or Lekeitio, four charming coastal towns.

Route through the Oma Forest.

We continue with another route through Urdaibai. This time, we leave the marshes to enter a very special forest, the painted forest of Oma. A work of art in the open sky, which, taking as a canvas the hundreds of trees of the forest, has traced a route in which the perspective and the painting make us find different works of art as we walk. Remember that the trees and the rest of the elements of this forest are still very much alive, so they are in continuous movement. A fact that makes some of the points marked for viewing the works have become obsolete. In short, a different space, in which young and old enjoy trying to get the best point of view to view each of these works. The Oma Valley is a place of great beauty. A place that we recommend you to visit after you have finished contemplating the works of the painted forest. We recommend you to follow the indications of our article, because, although the indications to go up from the restaurant Lezika to the forest are very clear, remember that it is necessary to get tickets to visit this Basque forest.

Route through Ogoño.

Ogoño, one of the most striking elements of the Urdaibai coast, faithful protector of Laga beach, invites us to enjoy the views from its highest point. A route that, although it may seem difficult to access, it is not. This massif, shaped by the Cantabrian Sea and the wind, is one of the most popular areas for active tourism. A modality that allows us to know every corner of our land while we do some activity such as climbing or hiking. This route takes us from Ibarrangelu to the top of Ogoño through Elantxobe, a family walk, in which we must be especially careful with children. Although Ogoño gives us some of the best views of all Urdaibai, it also has points where we must be very careful. We want to make special emphasis on the areas marked as slippery and in those points where, wanting to get as close as possible to the cliffs can give us more than one scare. Please be careful. Kontuz!

Route to the Gorliz Lighthouse.

This municipality located in the coastal region of Uribe gives us a nice and simple route to reach its lighthouse. A route that invites us to know the beautiful bay of which it is part and the beach that houses. A route that fuses sea, mountain and history to create a family plan that pleases all kinds of people. The farm of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, a space where injured animals are recovered and native species of Euskadi are bred, offers us another attraction. And is that walking among pottokas, Pyrenean cows and deer adds a certain charm to the way. Take note, Gorliz, beach, cliffs, animals and history.

Lighthouse of Gorliz, Bizkaia

  • Attractions: Lighthouse, trenches, canyons, cliffs…
  • Duration: Between 1 and 2 hours.
  • Length: 5 km.
  • More information: Gorliz, what to see and what to do.
  • Location: Gorliz, Bizkaia.

Route Domaine D’Abbadie de Hendaye.

Hendaye, one of the most visited villages in the French Basque Country during the summer season, presents one of its star routes, the Domaine D’Abbadie route. A space that caresses the sea while enjoying beautiful views of the town center and its beach. All this, guarded by the Abbadie Castle. An incredible château of the 19th century that enchants everyone who visits it. By the way, if you want to take the guided tour, we recommend that you consult their schedules before going, as they are somewhat eccentric. This route of familiar character can be extended as much as we want along the French Basque Country, a territory known as Iparralde (north in Basque) between the Basques and Basques. And it is that the cliffs that separate Hendaye and San Juan de Luz form a curious coastal route with which to enjoy a more extensive route.

Enjoying the Basque coast, Hendaia

  • Attractions: Cliffs, castles, forests and sea,
  • Duration: 2 hours.
  • Length: 5 km
  • More information: Domaine D’Abbadia Route, Hendaye.

Route of the murals of Vitoria Gasteiz.

In this case, urban art takes us through a large part of the urban center of the capital of Alava. A walk, in which the huge murals surprise us as we pass by. A perfect excuse to get to know the city while “playing” to find these curious works of art. In addition, although at first they were only in the medieval almond, in the historic center of Vitoria Gasteiz, today they are expanding to other areas of the city. Urban art is very popular among the inhabitants of Vitoria Gasteiz, to such an extent that this popular initiative has become a success. More and more neighbors are painting murals in their own neighborhoods. A way to contribute a small grain of sand while learning from some of the best artists of this technique. If you are looking for a route through the center of the capital of Alava, this is undoubtedly the best option.

Route through the Otzarreta beech forest.

In Euskadi we have beech trees for all tastes and colors. However, the Otzarreta has become one of the most famous on its own merits. In addition to having a great natural beauty due to its composition: small, cozy and located next to the river, it also stands out for its easy access, being able to drive almost to the forest itself. A marvel for the elderly or people with reduced mobility. Next to the Otzarreta beech forest we find the Saldropo wetland, a perfect place to enjoy nature with the family. It is here, where we find barbecue areas and a nice circular walk to lower the grafted food. A magical space from where hundreds of routes start. Choose yours.

Route through the Bardenas reales.

The Bardenas Reales form the so-called desert of Navarra. A place that, located next to our beloved Tudela, leaves astonished all those who visit it. A perfect place for active tourism, either by bike or hiking. If you also want to try the local cuisine and learn more about the incredible quality of the vegetables of Navarra, we recommend you to go to the restaurant 33, an establishment where you will be served like at home and where you will enjoy some dizzying gastronomic creations. The so-called return to the shooting range, is a perfect route for cycling. A route that, thanks to its circular character gives us multiple possibilities. Among them, we emphasize the possibility of making part in motorized vehicle and part walking. What is clear in any case is that it is a different route.

Route Plentzia Gorliz.

Plentzia and Gorliz, two towns located in the coastal strip of Bizkaia, propose us to walk through its streets while enjoying its beaches. Two huge sandy beaches, where, in addition to enjoy sunbathing and bathing also invite us to enjoy the various active tourism activities in the catalog of Troka Abentura, a company located in Gorliz, which tries to trigger the adrenaline of our bodies while showing us the charms of these lands. In case you do this route, we recommend you to go to the lighthouse, discovering the different batteries that are in its subsoil. In addition, you will have the opportunity to meet the pottokas, Pyrenean cows and deer that graze in the surrounding fields.

Infernuko Errota Route.

Located in an idyllic setting, lost in the mountains, we find a very special mill, infernuko errota, the mill of hell in Basque. A space that represents the Baztan Valley to the thousand wonders. Nature in its purest state. A route that, away from the hand of God, allows us to enjoy nature without any kind of distraction. It is in this same place, where we find the cheese factory kortariko gasna, a family farm, located in the Orabidea neighborhood of Lekaroz. An establishment that produces some amazing cheeses. Witness to this is the fact that it was chosen as the best cheese of Navarra and all of Euskal Herria in 2018. This route has a winning combination, eat at Etxebertzeko Borda, make the route to Infernuko Errota and on the way back take a guided tour in Kortariko Gasna. A 3 in 1 in all rule. Etxebertzeko Borda is a restaurant of the old times, authentic. We recommend you to try any of their creations, we are sure you will not be disappointed.

  • Attractions: History and culture in the middle of nature.
  • Duration: 1 hour (round trip)

Greenway of the Parque Lineal del Nervión.

This greenway precedes the Salto del Nervión, a space with which it shares some of its attractions. An example of this is the water flowing through the riverbed that marks the path to follow. An element that, once again, beautifies every meter of the road we travel. Water and lots of green, a typical combination of Euskadi, a winning combination. The different bridges that we find along the way combine history and innovation in equal parts. Making medieval and modern bridges coexist to make it possible for us to get from Laudio to Amurrio in total comfort. This route has in its final point, in its destination, in Amurrio, with a great prize, the Abiaga restaurant. An establishment that we fell in love with and that we are sure will give you a nice gastronomic experience after a morning of hiking in this incredible area of Araba. In any case, if you are looking for a route to do in the vicinity of Amurrio or Laudio, we recommend you to consider this route.

Regato Route.

The route that separates the Bizkaia neighborhoods of Gorostiza and El Regato, is one of those family routes through Euskadi that we recommend today. A pleasant and enjoyable walk, which, characterized by the marshes and rivers that we find on our way, has become one of the most demanded routes by the own barakaldeses and barakaldesas. In this sense, the Valley of El Regato invites us to know the industrial history of Barakaldo while we enjoy a nice leisure plan in the surroundings of Bilbao. This route is perfect for those who come to Barakaldo for one of the many shows held at the BEC. A route, which, together with the Hotel Puerta de Bilbao, forms a perfect complement to any concert held in Bilbao.

Okina – Sáseta route.

Okina, a small village in Alava located in the muga (border in Basque) with Condado de Treviño, Burgos, invites us to live a small family adventure through the gorge of the river Ayuda. A simple and beautiful itinerary, by means of which we encourage you to stretch your legs during your visit to the capital of Alava, Vitoria Gasteiz. The fact of walking at all times along the riverbed, between rapids, waterfalls and wells, makes this Basque route even more attractive. A 100% recommended experience. To the charms offered by the river Ayuda, we must add the fact that it is common to come across domestic animals, cows in most cases. An aspect that always pleases the youngest members of the family. One of those moments, which usually brings more than one smile to our children. We recommend that you take the opportunity to take a picture and remember everything that nature brings to enjoy a family day. Enjoy. Ondo pasa!

Route of the Portilla Castle.

Portilla, Zabalate in Basque, is a small village located in Zambrana, Araba. A rural area where the history of Euskadi is more alive than anywhere else. It is here, where we find the Monumental Complex of Portilla, a natural space, which, fused with history, forms a magical place, like a movie. Highly recommended. Although the Portilla Castle is the greatest representative of the Monumental Complex of the same name, it is not the only attraction that we find on the way. In addition, the different natural viewpoints and wooden walkways along the way, lead us to enjoy a historic family route.

Route in Añana.

The Salt Valley and the lake of Caicedo Yuso give us a nice tour in which we have the opportunity to know the old salt exploitation of Araba. A walk with a lot of history, which invites us to walk in the interior of Araba. A perfect route to do with children in Euskadi. This route can be divided into 2 routes, on the one hand the so-called “Green Route of the Salinas de Añana Salt Valley” and on the other hand the route to the lake of Caicedo Yuso. In our case, we wanted to combine both routes to obtain one of the most complete routes in this area.

Zirauntza river source route.

Asparrena invites us to know its capital, Araia, a small town, which, protected by lush forests hides one of the most beautiful routes in the area. In addition to the route that we recommend, it is also possible to visit the Museum of the Mitxarro (grey dormouse), to contemplate the old water channel, the dam or the ruins of the iron and steel exploitations of the area. The source of the river Zirauntza fits perfectly in the profile of routes of Euskadi to do with children. An easy and enjoyable route with a great reward-effort ratio. Do not forget to visit the museum of Mitxarro, although it is a small space it hides some secret that surely you do not know and it is totally free.

And the fact is that the route that today we do on foot, is the same that the Irati railroad used to do more than 50 years ago. If you are planning a trip to Navarra, we strongly recommend you to consider the possibility of including this pleasant and beautiful route in your plans. Route caves of Valdegovía.

Valdegovía, Gaubea in Basque, surprises us with some of the most important hermit caves of the peninsula. Spaces of great historical and cultural interest, which invite us to make a beautiful route through this great rural landscape. In this sense, we must indicate that it is not a route itself, but 4 small routes of less than 40 minutes each. And it is that the non-existence of a road that joins all, forces us to use a private vehicle, or failing that, to make the route by the shoulder of the road, an option that we do not recommend. Although these caves can be a nice place to teach some history to our children, we believe it is important to point out that all of them have ancient tombs. A fact that we understand may discourage many mothers and fathers. In this sense we invite you to read our article so that you can verify that the aspect that these tombs present is not violent at all.

The Harpea cave is one of the most beautiful places in the Pyrenees. A magical space. This cave located in the muga, on the border, between the small and charming towns of Orbaitzeta and Donibane Garazi (San Juan Pie de Puerto), has one of the most beautiful natural landscapes of all Euskal Herria. A family route to take into account. Its fascinating geological formation is another of its great charms. It is in this cave that one of the most striking phenomena of geology can be appreciated to perfection. The deformation of the geological layers. The folds. Very unique formations caused by the yielding of rocks under tectonic pressure. Really amazing.

Mount Hernio from Iturriotz.

The ascent to Mount Hernio from Iturriotz is one of the most emblematic routes in the province of Gipuzkoa. A route that surprises us with some of the best views of all Euskadi. A really amazing place. In this case, we must be very careful with the final stretch, with the ascent to the top. Moreover, perhaps the best option for all those who come with small children is to stop at the campsites of Zelatun, before facing the last stretch. We must remember that in the campsites of Zelatun we find a boarding house where we are encouraged to get strength both before and after the ascent. One more incentive for this impressive mountain route.

San Pedro Atxarre.

San Pedro Atxarre represents one of the most striking and emblematic viewpoints of Urdaibai is the protagonist of this route. A natural vantage point, from which a large part of the Biosphere Reserve can be seen. A real scandal. Near this route are emblematic places such as Ogoño, Gernika, Bermeo or the Oma Forest, highly recommended places to visit on any getaway to Bizkaia. Although the circular route from the beach of Laida can be a bit heavy for the youngest of the house, you must remember that there is the possibility of doing this route from the neighboring neighborhood of Akorda. Thus reducing the number of kilometers and hours it takes to make this route located at the edge of the sea. Undoubtedly one of the most striking routes of Euskadi that we have traveled.

Bolintxu.

The route to the Bolintxu waterfall is one of the most beautiful family routes in Euskadi. A simple and pleasant route, which, located a step away from the urban center of Bilbao, offers us to discover one of the few wild spaces of the capital of Bizkaia. This familiar route of Bilbao proposes us to go up the course of the river Bolintxu until finding us with its showy cascade. Undoubtedly one of its greatest attractions. There are several family routes to discover the incredible natural environment that surrounds the Bolintxu River. Circular and linear routes that present different options when planning our getaway in Bilbao. We are sure you will love it. If you have any questions, we encourage you to use the comment system below this article. We will try to respond as soon as possible.

Baia La Encontrada river route.

The Baia river route is one of the most attractive family routes in Euskadi. Thanks to its moderate difficulty, its suspension bridge and the legend of La Encontrada, this route has become one of the most popular in the province of Araba. A small jewel of nature that we recommend you to walk along with your family or friends, you will love it! Although there is the possibility of doing this route in a circular way, we recommend you to use the same route to go and return, in a linear way. The reason is none other than its poor signage. There are no marks or signs indicating the way to follow. If we choose to take the circular route, getting lost is a possibility. Caution. In any case, Lukiano and the rest of the towns located next to the Sanctuary of Gold offer us a great family plan. Are you up for it?

Route of the dolmens of Debabarrena.

The route of the dolmens takes us into an epic space, the Karakate and Irukurutzeta mountain range. From here, in addition to enjoying some of the best views of all Euskadi we will have the opportunity to see the dolmens, burial mounds and menhirs that our ancestors built as burial sites or territory delimitation. Although the original route PR-GI 94 has more than 20 kilometers, we only recommend doing part of the route, from Karakate to Irukurutzeta. Thus obtaining, another great family route of Euskadi. A linear route of great interest. We are sure you will love it.

Cave of Los Goros.

The route to reach the cave of Los Goros runs through the ravine of the same name, in the vicinity of the Sierra de Badaia. A space of great natural value that allows us to leave behind the stress and routine of the big cities. A simple and familiar route that takes us to the 5 mouths of the cave of Los Goros. Undoubtedly one of the most unknown family routes in Euskadi. The small village of Hueto Arriba / Otogoien, has a barbecue, a farm school and a rural house, 3 spaces very demanded by the inhabitants of Vitoria Gasteiz. And it is that the natural wealth of this part of Araba attracts to this small corner to a good number of visitors.

Relux window.

The Relux Window of Karrantza represents one of the most beautiful natural spaces of the town. Known as Ventana Relux, Relus or Reluso, this small opening in the limestone attracts a good number of visitors every year. It is not for less. In order to contemplate this wonder of nature we must reach the Alto de Ubal and from there make a nice family route. Are you up for it? The negative point of this family route in Euskadi is found when it comes to parking. And it is that we must indicate that in the Alto de Ubal there is no space where we can leave our vehicles. Nor in the vicinity. So we are forced to improvise parking spaces on the sides of the concrete track that connects the Alto de Ubal and cattle ranches.

Belaustegi beech forest.

The waterfall and the beech forest of Belaustegi represent 2 of the natural jewels of Euskadi. Spaces of great natural wealth, which, located in Orozko, in the heart of the Gorbeia Natural Park, invite us to enjoy nature with the family. The first of them, the beech forest, is located next to the forest track that starts from the parking lot created by the Gorbeia Natural Park. A short and familiar route that encourages us to stretch our legs. Although this route mentions the Belaustegi waterfall, a waterfall of more than 30 meters, the access is not suitable for children. Even less so in winter. The large wetland that hides under the beech forest of Belaustegi is an obstacle for children and adults. That is why we only recommend access to the beech forest.

Uguna waterfall.

The Uguna waterfall, one of the most striking of the Gorbeía Natural Park, invites us to make a short route from the Saldropo Wetland to this beautiful waterfall. We must mention that the last part of this route has narrow sections, with a certain slope and very slippery. Especially in winter. Be very careful. Apart from this last section, this family route of Euskadi does not have any difficulty. Beautiful and simple. Great option for those who want to know different corners of Euskadi. If you visit the Uguna Waterfall, we recommend that you take advantage of your trip to this corner of Euskadi to visit places of great interest such as the Otzarreta Beech Forest or the Saldropo Wetland. 3 spaces that we are sure you will love.

Mollarri loading dock.

The Cargadero de Mollarri is one of those places that leave a mark. A space with great historical and natural load, which allows us to enjoy one of the most beautiful stretches of the Basque coast. After enjoying this tour, we recommend that you take the opportunity to visit Zarautz, one of the most complete towns in Gipuzkoa. This old mineral loading dock invites us to visit Talaimendi in search of the best views of our land. Zarautz is protected by towns like Orio, Getaria or Mutriku, enclaves of great beauty that, if you have time, we recommend you to visit after making this family route of Euskadi.

Delika Greenway.

The Senda Verde de Delika is one of the last routes that the Provincial Council of Araba has prepared. A family route, which takes us to know the Delika Canyon and the Salto del Nervión. Undoubtedly 2 of the most important and striking natural sites of Araba. This route has a circular section, which in the rainy season is interrupted by the rise of the riverbed. In our opinion, the best time of the year to walk the Senda Verde de Delika is in autumn, when the water begins to make its presence felt. Visiting this enclave in summer, when there is hardly any water, is a mistake, since its beauty lies in the different waterfalls that we find along the route.

Route to the viewpoint of the island of Zuaza.

The viewpoint of the island of Zuaza, also known as San Juan Punta, offers one of the most spectacular views of the Ullibarri Gamboa reservoir and the island of Zuaza. This family route of Euskadi, is not as well known as the rest of the routes of Araba that we mention in this article but has a large dose of attractions. We hope you like it. Remember that you can subscribe to our YouTube channel to keep up to date with all the routes that we recommend on our website. The opening of the gates of the dam is another of the charms of this route in Alava. A spectacle that attracts the attention of the smallest of the house. If this route is too short for you, if you are looking for a longer route, we recommend you to merge this route with the route to the Ullibarri Gamboa reservoir. We are sure you will love it.

Route to the Aixola reservoir.

The route along the Aixola reservoir is another of the many family routes that we recommend in Euskadi. This time, we have gone to Elgeta, Gipuzkoa to enjoy one of the most emblematic leisure areas of the region of Debabarrena. The route complies with everything that we require from this type of routes: a good ratio of effort and reward. In this sense, we must say that the accumulated unevenness is practically nonexistent while the reservoir puts the point of enchantment to this circular route. This route can be extended to the center of municipalities such as Elgeta, but the profile changes drastically. If it seems to you a route of short duration and you want to make another route in the region of Debabarrena, we recommend the route of the dolmens of Soraluze. We must indicate that in the reservoir of Aixola it is prohibited to bathe, to fish or to make fire.

Xorroxin waterfall.

The route to the waterfall of Xorroxin invites us to travel through the incredible Baztan Valley in search of some of the most amazing corners of northern Navarre. A family route of 7.5 kilometers and 150 meters of unevenness that proposes a nice plan to discover Erratzu with the family. Highly recommended. Of course, when you reach the waterfall we advise you to be especially careful. And it is that the roots and rocks that we find next to the waterfall of Xorroxin are very slippery. The return to Erratzu is from the neighborhood of Gorostapolo, thus completing a circular route of great scenic beauty. This section of the route runs along the road that connects both towns, so we recommend that you be careful with cars. In any case, we must point out that this road has hardly any traffic, since it is forbidden to park in Gorostapolo to make the route to the waterfall of Xorroxin. Remember that if you visit this enclave in high season it is necessary to make a reservation. More information in our article on the Xorroxin Waterfall.

Aldabide waterfall.

The Aldabide waterfall is one of those treasures that surprises us with the Gorbeia Natural Park. A waterfall, located at the foot of the Itxina massif, invites us to enjoy incredible views of the valley. That if, even being a route of less than 2 hours of duration and less than 5 kilometers long, the first section can be somewhat hard for the smallest of the house. And it is that the slope that we find next to the water deposit of the district of Urigoiti of Orozko, is usually hard to digest. Once up, the profile of the route is softened. Thus everything, we believe that it fits to the perfection in the profile of familiar routes to realize with children in Euskadi. Although in the article on this route we show you the linear route to the waterfall of Aldabide (round trip), there is the possibility of a circular route to discover other landscapes of this incredible natural landscape. In any case, whether you do the linear or circular route, we are sure that the imposing presence of the Itxina massif and the Aldabide waterfall will captivate you. We hope you like it.

Route to the castle of Butrón.

This family route in Euskadi is longer than usual. But its profile, without large slopes, encourages families to go up the Butron estuary in search of one of the most beautiful and important castles of our land. The route starts next to the Plentzia metro station and later crosses the Gandía neighborhood until it reaches the banks of the Butrón estuary. A route full of charms, which has several options. And if the 13 kilometers of this route seem too long, it is possible to use public transport, the bus, to return to Bilbao or other nearby towns. This route has an infinite number of charms. In addition to the aforementioned Butrón castle, there is the Arbina dam and the town of Plentzia. As if this were not enough, the region of Uribe allows us to enjoy places like Sopela, Barrika, Gorliz, Armintza, Mungia or Bakio. Places that we are sure you will love.

Route to Serantes Mountain.

The Serantes mountain is one of the most emblematic summits of Santurtzi and Bizkaia. A space, which offers several options to access to its highest point. And it is that although we recommend to follow the track that leaves from the urban nucleus of Santurtzi to arrive until the tower, until the summit, other options exist. The reason for our recommendation is very simple, the 10 kilometers long track that we mentioned offers us a familiar and pleasant route to reach the top in a comfortable and familiar way. We believe that the profile of the other trails that lead to the top of Mount Serantes may not be suitable for families. The historical buildings that we find in the high part of the Serantes mountain are another of its attractions. A clear example of this are the torreo and the fort of Serantes, the first of these structures has been restored and can be visited, while the second only preserves its ruins.

Route in Arkaute.

The Arkaute raft offers us a great option to enjoy nature just 4 kilometers from the center of Vitoria Gasteiz. A family tour that encourages us to enjoy a herd of deer, spoonbills or storks through the different observatories that we find on our way. As if all this were not enough, the interpretation center Ataria puts in value each of the attractions of this area of Euskadi. This route has hardly any accumulated slope, which makes it a perfect option for the whole family. And in addition to all the above, we must point out that the track along which the route runs allows us to make the whole journey with a child seat. Are you up for it?

Route to Salto del Nervión from Untza.

The Salto del Nervión, the largest waterfall in the peninsula, offers one of the greatest spectacles of Araba and Euskadi. It is not the first time we talk about this waterfall, nor will it be the last. And this is undoubtedly one of the greatest treasures of our land. In this case, we have made the route that starts from the town of Untza, a route that gives us stunning views of the Delika gorge while enjoying the company of vultures, horses and sheep. The only unevenness of this route is found in the initial stretch, in the first and only slope. The rest of the way runs practically without any unevenness. In addition to the aforementioned Salto del Nervión, the greatest attraction of this route is the incredible panoramic views that accompany us from almost half of the route. The route along the cliff, allows us to enjoy the Salto del Nervión from a different perspective than usual. Are you up for it?

Altube waterfall.

The Altube waterfall is one of the most unknown of Euskadi. A small waterfall that, located in the municipality of Zuia, in Araba, gives us a nice family route. We must indicate that more than a route it is a small walk. This linear route is only 2 kilometers long. This route is very attractive and pleasant, but it is not perfect. And it is that we must take into account that the parking is very small and the route is not signposted. We encourage you to read our article on the Altube waterfall so that you can enjoy this space in style.

Labyrinth of Arno.

The labyrinth of Arno and the arch of Zalamportillo are one of the greatest jewels of the Entzia mountain range. Undoubtedly one of the most important natural areas of the province of Araba. During this family route through Euskadi we will enjoy beech forests, an idyllic reservoir and a surprising labyrinth of limestone rock. And it is here, in this labyrinth of limestone rock, where the striking arch of Zalamportillo is located. Are you ready to discover it? The route is not very physically demanding but the route is not signposted. A fact that in autumn, when the leaves cover the path makes it easy to get disoriented. We recommend you to read our article so that you can follow our indications at all times. We hope you like it.

Getaria mouse.

The mouse of Getaria, also known as Mount San Anton, encourages us to walk along its slopes while enjoying the different panoramic views that we find on our way. A simple and beautiful route, which we encourage you to do in any getaway to the Basque coast. Before going to Getaria we recommend you to read the article we have dedicated to it. And it is worth knowing every detail of this emblematic place. The lighthouse of Getaria, is one of the many attractions of Mount San Anton. A building, that together with the seagulls, the stone walls and the views, make the smallest of the house enjoy like dwarfs. This is the reason why this route is, without a doubt, one of the most successful family routes in the Basque Country. Do you dare to visit this incredible corner of Getaria?

Labyrinth of La Arboleda.

The Labyrinth of La Arboleda is located in the heart of the mining area of Bizkaia. Between mountains of iron. A landscape of great historical importance, in which nature is the main protagonist. Although this route has many attractions, the labyrinth of rocks that we find in its final stretch, next to the Ekoetxea of Peñas Negras, is one of its greatest attractions. A space that has been created by the erosion of limestone rock and mining. After the route, we recommend that you visit the interpretation center of Peñas Negras and the village of La Arboleda. Spaces, which we hope will help you to understand what this place meant in the past. By the way, La Arboleda is known throughout the Basque Country for its famous beans. Maybe it is a good time to taste them. What do you think?

Purón river gorge.

Although this route is 16 kilometers long and has more than 600 meters of elevation gain, you should know that there is the possibility of shortening it according to our needs. The complete route joins the urban centers of Lalastra and Herán. Or what is the same, Araba and Burgos. A route through the Natural Park of Valderejo, which allows us to follow the course of the river Purón until we reach the gorge of the same name. Although most of the route runs through the lands of Alava, the complete route offers us the opportunity to walk between the communities of Castilla y León and Euskadi offering us some corners of great charm. A route, that next to the bed of the river Purón becomes a very interesting plan.

Pol Pol, Urkiola Natural Park.

The route to the source and fields of Pol Pol is one of the most popular family routes of Euskadi, a simple and beautiful route, which allows us to know some of the most emblematic corners of the Natural Park of Urkiola. Moreover, if you want to extend this route you can climb up to the Larrano refuge, a space from which we can appreciate an impressive panoramic view of Durango, Elorrio and Abadiño. Before making this family route of Euskadi we recommend you to go to the Sanctuary of Urkiola and the viewpoint of the 3 crosses, it is worth it. Especially the latter. From this viewpoint we will have the opportunity to contemplate a panoramic view of the mountains through which our route passes. We love this place.

Waterfalls of the Baia River.

The waterfalls of the river Baia encourage us to enjoy one of the most beautiful family routes in Euskadi. A quiet, pleasant and fun tour along the riverbed. Although the waterfalls that we find in this corner of Euskadi have nothing to do with large volume waterfalls such as the Salto del Nervión, it is worth enjoying them. The route starts at the Parketxe de Sarria, the park house on the Alava side. If you decide to enjoy this beautiful family route of Euskadi, we encourage you to bring food from home to eat at the tables and benches that we find around the Parketxe de Sarria. This is one of the many family plans that the Gorbeia Natural Park offers us.

Route to the eye of Aitzulo.

The Aizkorri Aratz Natural Park encourages us to make different routes through its territorial limits. In this case, the town of Oñati, offers us a nice family route in Euskadi, the route to the eye of Aitzulo. The route that we present to you is part of the so-called water path, the route PR-Gi 3003. Unfortunately, the complete route can be a bit heavy for the smallest of the house, reason why we only recommend you to do the linear route that separates Araotz and the eye of Aiztulo. The ascent to the eye of Aitzulo starts next to the church of Araotz, near the emblematic Sanctuary of Arantzazu and the historic center of Oñati. Places that we recommend you to visit after making this beautiful route. It is worth it. We hope you like them.

Aguake waterfall.

The route to the Aguake waterfall from the town center of Antoñana, is one of those routes that leave a mark. Not only for the natural beauty that surrounds the waterfall, but also for the history and the urban center of Antoñana. An area of the Montaña Alavesa that we recommend you to visit during any trip to Euskadi. We recommend you to do this route during the rainy season. When the flow of the river Sabando increases together with the last rainfalls. This route of 80 meters of accumulated unevenness, it enamors to great part of the people who decide to visit it. And it is that the last stretch of this walk is full of charms. The Sabando river, the beech forest and the Aguake waterfall create a landscape worthy of admiring and enjoying.

La Tobería Waterfalls.

The waterfalls of the Tobería lead us to walk along the northern slope of the Sierra de Entzia. An area of great natural beauty, which we already told you about in our article on the Labyrinth of Arno. The name of the waterfalls of the Tobería comes from the Toba, a porous and delicate limestone, which is created from the calcium carbonate contained in the groundwater that flows from the Sierra de Entzia. Remember that the access road usually fills with mud with the first rains of the year. Be careful. On the other hand, although this route has positive slope during practically the whole route, its reduced length makes it one of our family routes of Euskadi. A family walk that we recommend to everyone who visits this area of Araba.

Besaide.

Besaide, the point where the Basque provinces of Araba, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa meet, represents one of the most emblematic peaks of our territory. In this case, we encourage you to make a nice and enjoyable route from the neighborhood of Udala.

Labetxu, the valley of colors of the Basque coast, offers us an incredible geological paradise by the sea. Although it can be considered a family tour, it is not conditioned, so we do not recommend doing it with small children and elderly people. We encourage you to read the article we have published on our website to know all the details of this route. In case you opt for this route, we recommend you to be very careful.

Old road of Lezama and Pikotamendi.

The Vía Vieja de Lezama runs along the old railroad line that linked Bilbao with Lezama. A route that takes us directly to Pikotamendi, one of the mountains surrounding the capital of Bizkaia. It is here, on the slopes of Pikotamendi, where we find some of the viewpoints with the best views of Bilbao. This is a very simple family route that can be reached comfortably by public transport (metro Bilbao).

Osinberde waterfall.

The Osinberde waterfall represents one of those magical places in Euskadi. A corner of our geography, which can not be visited all year round. We recommend you to take a look at the video we published on our YouTube channel to check the difference between trying to visit this waterfall in winter and summer. Videos of family routes in Euskadi.

We have taken advantage of many of our trips to capture the route and upload it to our YouTube channel. We recommend you to take a look at the hundreds of videos we have, we are sure that many of them will catch your attention. By the way, if you like what you see, we encourage you to subscribe to our channel. A good way to follow all our steps throughout the Basque Country. A good tool to find your next destination. Route signaling.

We would like to talk about a basic aspect of hiking, signaling. A very important topic. Nowadays, there are hundreds of signs and information panels that help us to complete these hiking routes without fear of getting lost. Thanks to these indications, it is no longer necessary to know how to use a compass or to have a GPS to be able to find our way through the different spaces around us. However, knowing how to interpret the indications that we find along the way is indispensable. A task that we want to make easier for you.

local trail marker, irati forest,, navarrese pyrenees,, navarrese pyrenees

We should know that these European-approved signs always have two stripes, the upper one, always white, and the lower one, which varies in color depending on the type of route it indicates. Currently, the types of trails that we can find are the following:

  • Gran Recorrido (GR): White and red color, routes of more than 50 km.
  • Pequeño Recorrido (PR): White and yellow color, routes between 10 and 50 km.
  • Sendero Local (SL): White and green color, routes of less than 10 km.

In our case, most of the routes in Euskadi that we have selected to do with children belong to the second and third group, between 5 and 20 km. However, it is not the same to find 2 parallel lines (correct direction), than two lines in cross (wrong direction) or with a slight angle (change of direction), because each of them indicates a different thing. Here is a small graphic summary in which we can see the marks that we will find on the road. Routes through the Basque Country, signaling of routes

The routes mentioned above are just a small representation of the routes that can be found in Euskadi. 75 routes through Euskadi suitable for children that invite us to visit different parts of our geography. A sample through which we try to infect all the people who visit us to travel through our land on foot. By the way, we accept suggestions to complement what for us are some of the most beautiful and appreciated routes in Euskadi. We will be updating this article with new routes, stay tuned!
