A route of great natural value, which encourages us to cross the mountains of the municipality of Urkabustaiz to reach the Salto del Nervión, the largest waterfall in the peninsula.
We must say that this route is perhaps one of the longest to reach the Salto del Nervión, but also one of the most beautiful and unknown. The traditional routes that start from Monte Santiago have been joined by the route that we present today and the green path of Delika, a route that allows us to contemplate the Salto del Nervión from below. Although there is the option of doing this route in circular format, we decided to make it linear, round trip along the same route. Or practically linear, because on the way out we decided to completely skirt the cliff until we reached the Salto del Nervión and on the way back we did it along the main trail. The route to the Salto del Nervión from Untza, is undoubtedly one of the longest routes to visit the Salto del Nervión. But also one of the most unknown. The only difficulty of the route is found in its initial part. A slope of a cumulative drop of about 300 meters that leads us to crown the crags that draw the Delika gorge. From this point, the route has practically no slope.
As for the way to follow, there is no loss. We only have to follow the track that starts from the parking lot of Untza. Straight ahead. Of course, remember that once we climb the slope of the beginning, we have the possibility of making the route along the main track or along the cliff. We recommend you to go along the cliff and return along the track. Do not worry, there is a fence that protects us from any scare. In any case, be careful with the children.
When we made the route, the Salto del Nervión was dry. Not a drop was coming down. And we must remember that if we want to see the waterfall with water we must make this route during the thaw or after a day of heavy rain. - This is a grazing area. It is common to find horses and flocks of sheep. In the latter case, they are usually accompanied by mastiffs, we recommend that you try to go around the herd, in a quiet way, without running or shouting.
- If you are accompanied by your dogs, they must be leashed.
- Water is a must, especially on hot summer days.
- In winter, the first part of the route can be a bit slippery and muddy. Footwear is very important.
- Although the cliff is fenced, we recommend caution.
- When the Salto del Nervión is dry, there are many people who go up to a few meters from the cliff to take a picture. We do not recommend it.
- Next to the house on Mount Santiago, 15 minutes from the Salto del Nervión, there are tables where you can eat. However, it is difficult to find a place at rush hour.
- This route passes through windy areas, a windbreaker never hurts.
Salto del Nervión.
The Salto del Nervión is currently the largest waterfall in the entire peninsula. Or what is the same, the waterfall with the biggest fall of the peninsula. A spectacle that we recommend you to see at least once in your life. Of course, remember that this waterfall only has water at specific times. Where to park in Untza.
At the end of the city center, in the last stretch of Nervión kalea, we find a small free parking. We leave the link to Google Maps here. This is the only official parking enabled for this route. Unfortunately, in high season it tends to fill up quite easily. In case you do not find a place, we recommend you to turn around and park at any of the 2 previous intersections. However, without closing the passage of vehicles and respecting private properties. Keep in mind that this is an area where tractors pass through, so they should be able to maneuver easily. You can also park in the village itself.

The route that we present today covers some of the most emblematic areas of Urkabustaiz. A municipality of more than 60 square kilometers located between the Gorbeia massif and the crags of Orduña.
