Route from Plentzia to Butrón Castle, going up the Butrón estuary.
The route from Plentzia to Butron Castle takes us up the Butron estuary. A simple, beautiful and pleasant route that invites us to enjoy nature while we enjoy spaces such as the estuary and Butron Castle. Places that we recommend you to visit during any trip to Bilbao and surroundings. The route between Plentzia and Butron Castle is, together with the route to the lighthouse of Gorliz and the route along the cliffs of the Flysch of Bizkaia, one of the best options for hiking in the region of Uribe.
We must point out that although this route has no difficulty, its 13 kilometers in length (round trip) are a drawback for the smallest of the house. A problem that can be solved by using the Bizkaibus lines A3225 and A3531 or eating in the surroundings of the castle itself and returning quietly in the afternoon. That said, we believe that we can classify this route as one of the many family routes that we can find in Euskadi. Do you dare to visit the Castle of Butron through this route from Plentzia?

Route from Plentzia to Butron Castle.
This route begins next to the Gazteluondo mill, on one of the sides of the pedestrian bridge of Plentzia. A large white structure that connects the metro station and the town center. Whether you have come by metro or by any other means of transport (bus, car…), you must cross the bridge towards the town center of Plentzia. Once at the other end, we must turn right. Immediately we will begin to find the first signs (red and white) of the GR 280 (Gran Recorrido de Uribe), and is that, the route that we present today runs through one of the sections of this long distance trail.
From this point, we must follow the walk that runs along the banks of the estuary until you reach the road linking Barrika and Plentzia. Turn left. Shortly before the traffic circle we will find a crosswalk that we will use to head towards the Gandia neighborhood.
From here, we must continue straight on. At about 650 meters we will find a fountain that we can take as a reference to confirm that we are on the right track. We continue!
After about 500 meters, after crossing almost the entire neighborhood of Gandia, we reach a vertical sign indicating that we must turn left. You should pay special attention to this point. And is that after turning left, about 38 meters, we must turn off again. This time to the right. We leave the road to enter the forest through a strada (Butron Bidea). This is undoubtedly one of the few points where we can get lost on this route, the rest has no great difficulty.
From here, after walking for 500 meters along the stone and dirt track, we descend to the level of the Butron estuary. From this point the route runs along the water, offering us an idyllic setting. Magical.
After about 3 kilometers, we reach a kind of “wooden dock” that allows us to contemplate the Arbina dam from a distance. Further on, about 190 meters ahead, after passing a house, we find a detour on the right hand side that takes us to the dam itself. After enjoying this small dam, we return to the road.
After 1.5 kilometers, we reach a crossroads, turn right. We are already close. We only have to follow the riverbed for 150 meters until we reach the bridge that crosses the estuary and walk for another 150 meters to reach the impressive castle of Butrón.
