Bermeo, what to see and do in one of the most beautiful fishing villages on the Basque coast.
Bermeo, one of the most important towns along the coast of Bizkaia, preserves much of its culture and history intact. An aspect that can be appreciated just walking through the streets and squares that lead to the port. This town founded in 1236 by Don Lopez Diaz II de Haro, was until 1602 capital of Bizkaia, more than enough argumentation to give us an idea of the importance that this urban center has had throughout history. Although Bermeo has countless tourist attractions, few people decide to dedicate a whole day to discover all the charms of this fishing village. Bermeo is not only San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. The Tala Park, the sculptures, the canneries, the casino, the shipyards, the boat tours or the experience of swimming with sharks are also part of the essence of this small coastal town. If you want to know the real Bermeo, we advise you not to miss each section of this article, it has no waste. Ready to discover what to see in Bermeo with us?

Bermeo is one of the largest and most populated towns in the region of Busturialdea. A town that became the second most important fishing port in Bizkaia thanks to the canning industry. Nowadays, Bermeo is one of the few fishing villages that still lives in the same way as its ancestors did, from the sea, from fishing. A fact that can be easily appreciated just by looking at the fishing boats in the port and the number of canning companies in the area.
What to see in Bermeo.
In this section on what to see in Bermeo we are going to show you all those places that are of special importance in this seaside town. It’s time to discover the real Bermeo, it’s time to see the sea from the logging, it’s time to enjoy one of the most beautiful villages in the Basque Country. Ready?
San Juan de Gaztelugatxe: San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is one of the most visited places in the Basque Country. A space of great natural beauty that, located in Bermeo, invites us to enjoy the cliffs and the sea from a different perspective. This complex formed by a hermitage, an islet and a bridge, has become one of the points that has aroused more interest in the Basque coast. Undoubtedly, one of the wonders of Euskadi. If you want more information about this enclave, we recommend you to read our article about San Juan de Gaztelugatxe.
Lamera Park: Lamera Park is located in the center of the municipality, next to the port and the train station. This park represents one of the largest open spaces in the town and also one of the largest leisure areas. Undoubtedly, one of the most emblematic places of Bermeo. The neuralgic center of the town.
Sabino Arana Square: In the heart of the historic center of Bermeo we find one of the most emblematic squares of the town. A space in which the town hall, the kiosk and the church of Santa Maria are the main protagonists.
The port of Bermeo: The port, one of the liveliest places in the municipality, is another of the most important places in Bermeo. And it is around it that has been created what today is the urban center of the town, the old town. If you want to contemplate the port from different perspectives, we recommend 3 spaces: from the old breakwater (next to the sculpture of the wave), from the top of the new breakwater and in front of the entrance to the fisherman’s museum. Privileged spaces that deserve a photograph for the memory.
Ortube tuna boat: In the port of Bermeo, we find the last wooden tuna boat of the town. A boat, that after years working at sea, was acquired by the town council of Bermeo to give it a second life as heritage of the town. Unfortunately, it came to be in a situation of semi-abandonment, which encouraged a non-profit association to take over the reins of the tuna boat for its restoration. You can get more information and book your visit in our article about guided visits to the Ortube tuna boat.

Fisherman’s Museum: The Fisherman’s Museum is located on the port of Bermeo, on the way to the logging, in the Ercilla Tower. A noble building that was declared a National Monument due to its great historical and architectural value. This museum of small dimensions, realizes from 1948 a nice journey through the history of Bermeo and its union with the sea. Being one of the few museums in the world dedicated exclusively to explaining the way of life of the Basque fishermen makes it win many points against the tide of visitors who visit our coast. If you are interested in this space, we recommend reading our article on the Bermeo Fishermen’s Museum.
Cape Matxitxako: Located between Bermeo and San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, Cape Matxitxako represents the most protruding cape of the Cantabrian Sea. One of the most charming places of our coast. Currently, there are two lighthouses, the old one from 1852 and the new one from 1909. From either of them you can see how the blue of the sea merges with the intense green of the cliffs. An amazing view. Currently there are two accesses, the main one, which can be accessed by car to the lighthouse itself or by the coastal path, a path that starts in front of the gas plant that we find on the coast of Biscay. Matxitxako is the perfect place for the sighting of birds and cetaceans, in fact, there are many associations that meet annually to observe the coming and going of these species. An activity that has a greater activity during the month of October. We must indicate that from Matxitxako one of the best panoramic views of San Juan de Gaztelugatxako can be contemplated. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe.
Town Hall: Located in the center of town, in the upper part, in the historic center, this incredible building was restored to regain the presence it had in the past.
Church of Santa María: This church, inaugurated in 1858, is one of the neoclassical jewels of Bizkaia. Although the building that gives life to the church is of great value, most of the people who pass by it emphasize the beauty of its portico and its main facade.
Church of Santa Eufemia: The church that we find today is partly thanks to the reconstruction that this temple underwent from the thirteenth century to the fifteenth century. This Gothic style church is undoubtedly the oldest church in Bermeo. Did you know that in the past the lords of Bizkaia swore the fueros in this church?
San Juan Gate: Bermeo had a great wall that protected its urban center. To cross it, it was necessary to cross one of the 7 gates that had this defensive barrier. Today one of these gates is still standing, it is the Gate of San Juan. This gate takes its name from San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, as it was the exit that took the Bermeans to this historic place. If you look at the inside of this 14th century door, you will see how it has a small image of San Juan at the top.
Casino of Bermeo: The casino, one of the most striking buildings of the town, watches over the Lamera Park from one of its ends. As a curiosity, we should mention that this building never housed a casino. This building was designed to house the Sociedad Bermeana (Severiano Achucarro, 1893). Today it houses several leisure spaces inside.
San Francisco Convent: This convent has the honorary title of the oldest convent in Bizkaia (XIV century). Inside you will find a beautiful Gothic style cloister which, like the church, is open to the public.
Ice cream kiosk: This small ice cream kiosk located in Lamera Park, responds to the name of Helados Pereira. An emblematic and historic establishment, which in addition to making incredible handmade ice cream, is also part of Ernest Hemingway’s stay in Bermeo. The famous American journalist took a picture of himself next to the old ice cream parlor on more than one occasion.
Izaro Island: This island that protects the entrance to Urdaibai is full of stories. Although the island is currently uninhabited, several religious buildings such as the Franciscan convent or the hermitage of La Magdalena have been built on its summit. Buildings of which nothing remains today. But if Izaro is famous for something, it is for being the great protagonist of the beautiful rivalry between Bermeo and Mundaka. A rivalry that has its origin in the race that confronted Mundaka and Bermeo to take control of the island of Izaro. Legend has it that they played for the island in a race that had the neighboring municipality of Elantxobe as referee. A race that Bermeo finally won and that is remembered annually in the festivities of the town with the launching of a tile into the sea by the mayor of the town.
Tala: At both ends of the port of Bermeo, we find several watchtowers that serve as viewpoints from which to contemplate the strength of the sea. In our opinion, the most beautiful of them all is the Tala, a beautiful wooded area located in the upper part of the town that allows us to enjoy the beauty of the sea while having a drink. And it is that captained by the canteen that we find in a corner, the tala has become one of the places of leisure preferred by the bermeanos and bermeanas. As you can see, this space formerly used for whale watching has become a great viewpoint from which to contemplate areas of great beauty such as Izaro, Ogoño, Mundaka and many other areas of Urdaibai, amazing!
Sollube: Mount Sollube, one of Bizkaia’s honking mountains (mountains from which the call was made to attend the General Assemblies of Bizkaia), hosts in its highest part the Cannon restaurant, one of our favorite establishments to enjoy Bermeo from a bird’s eye view, a marvel. We recommend our article Cannon etxea Restaurant, a restaurant of height.
La Gaviota: Located in the middle of the sea, about 8 kilometers from Cape Matxitxako, off the coast of Bermeo, this subway gas storage has become a reference on the Basque coast. What used to be the most famous natural gas field on our coast (1986 – 1994) has been converted into a storage facility (1995) due to its impressive characteristics. Located at a depth of more than 2,000 meters, connected to land by a gas pipeline that transports the gas to the treatment plant in Bermeo, La Gaviota has become one of the most important gas storage facilities in the whole peninsula.
These are some of the most important places in Bermeo. Anyway, in the rest of the sections of this article you will find a lot of information about the sculptures, murals and other aspects of Bermeo. We hope it will be of help when planning your trip to Bermeo.

Bermeo murals.
Although Bermeo does not have a large collection of paintings like the one found in the route of the murals of Vitoria-Gasteiz, we believe that its murals deserve a mention. And, among all of them, we find works of great importance such as the one of the azoka (fair in Basque) and those of the felling. Works of art that attract the attention of all the people who visit Bermeo.
- Azoka: Taking as a representation paintings by the great Basque painter Aurelio Arteta, the town council of Bermeo has wanted to give presence to the municipal market and to all the people who work for the local products. Thus, in this great mural, the figures of the arrantzale (fisherman), baserritarra (villager) and the neskatilas, the women who carried the products of the farmhouse to the square, can be appreciated to perfection.

- Tala: In the park of La Tala, on a wall, we find more than 10 paintings that reflect the culture and history of this Biscayan fishing village. Murals of great quality, that invite the visitor to enter into the essence of Bermeo.

Sculptures of Bermeo.
Scattered throughout Bermeo we find a beautiful and varied collection of sculptures that show us the history, culture and traditions of this Biscayan municipality. Works of art, with the “Monument to the fishermen” at the head, give us a nice route through the streets and squares of the town. The largest number of sculptures can be found around the port, in the historic center, a long list of works that symbolize the different aspects that once were part of the daily life of our ancestors. Nestor Basterretxea and Enrike Zubia are some of the artists chosen to give life to the different works of art scattered around the town.
- The milkmaid: Enrike Zubia shows us the ancient profession of the milkmaid through a group of statues in which you can see a person delivering milk with his donkey. The location of this sculpture is of great importance, as it is said that it was here, on the outskirts of the port, where the people who worked the land in the vicinity of Bermeo used to go.

- Monument to the fishermen: With the name Badatoz! already come in Basque, we find the sculpture that, personally, we like the most. Among the many sculptures that we find in bermeano territory, this is undoubtedly the one that tells, with more emotion and character, the tradition and history of the bermeano people with the sea. A beautiful monument, which recreates the situation of a family of fishermen waiting for the arrival of theirs to land.

- Fish sellers: On both sides of the arch of the door of San Juan, in the upper part of Bermeo, we find several sculptures representing 2 fish sellers. An artistic work of Enrike Zubia from Bermeo that makes a nod and tribute to the importance that this trade has had historically in Bermeo.

- Last wave, last breath: With this title was baptized another of Enrike Zubia’s works that we found in Bermeo. Although it is not as popular as the previous ones, the importance of this work is vital to understand the way of life of this Basque town. This piece, built with bronze and cement, tells the story of a shipwrecked sailor in the presence of a young man and a dog.

- Olatua: Olatua, wave in Basque. This enormous sculpture is the work of the Basque artist Nestor Basterretxea. A huge wave that, according to the artist, represents the strength and beauty of this fishing village. This structure inaugurated in 2006 also represents a good point from which to photograph the town.

- Monument to Benito Barrueta: Once again, Nestor Basterretxea gives us again a work of art in the park of the logging, the natural watchtower of Bermeo. A monument of wood and cement that keeps alive the spirit of this painter who was born in the Ercilla Tower, the old cabinetmaking workshop of his aita (father in Basque).

- Basque cosmogonic series: This series, composed of 18 pieces, presides over Lamera Park, next to the casino, creating a circle where culture is the main protagonist.

- The return: Between fishing boats, in one of the breakwaters that protect the port of Bermeo, we find a bronze sculpture that represents the return home of an arrantzale. This work by Casto Solano was exhibited at the EXPO92 in Seville.

- Stelae: As in the museum of stelae in Abaurrea Alta, in Bermeo we also find a space dedicated to these funerary sculptures. In this case, the cloister has several pieces donated by the artist Nestor Basterretxea to his hometown.

- Taraska: In the Frantzisko Deuna square we find a fountain designed by the engineer Antonio Ibarraran. This last piece is located next to the cloister and the milkmaid, next to the entrance road to the village.

These works of art that we have mentioned above are just a small representation of all the art that can be found in the open air in Bermeo, a delight. This town has joined other towns like Sopela, where art offers visitors a different way to discover its urban center.

An activity that we recommend you to do at least once in your life. Nothing to do with dolphinariums, aquariums or zoos, where the animals are in captivity. We must emphasize that this is an experience of more than 4 hours in which we will sail the Cantabrian Sea in search of the cetaceans that inhabit the Basque coast. More information about this experience in our article about boat trips to see cetaceans in the Basque Country.

Where to sleep in Bermeo.
Believe it or not, Bermeo does not have a large number of places to stay overnight. That is why we wanted to compile for you some of the most interesting accommodations in Bermeo and Urdaibai. In this case, we recommend 4 accommodations that we hope you like.
- Villa Nafarrola: This accommodation is located in the Nafarrola Erdikoa farmhouse in Bermeo. A building that has been proposed as a monument. Bermeo Beaches.
The beaches of Bermeo are different from the rest. They are small beaches, which, located in the shelter of the cliffs, allow us to enjoy swimming and snorkeling. In our humble opinion, Aritzatxu beach, located at one end of the town, next to the soccer field and the cemetery, is one of the quietest and most curious beaches in the town. - Aritzatxu.

Although there are many restaurants around the port of Bermeo, we would like to recommend 2 restaurants located outside the city center, in the neighborhoods of Mañu and Almike. Our recommendations are none other than Restaurante Cannon and Restaurante Almiketxu. Two great restaurants where fish is of great importance. A series of locations among which are the Basque towns of Bermeo, Zumaia or Barrika. As for the scene chosen in Bermeo, we must indicate that it has been the famous San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, a place that fits perfectly with the theme of this American series. Location.
This small fishing village has a strategic location on the Basque coast. Bermeo is located in the interior of the Biosphere Reserve of Urdaibai, in one of the wildest and most beautiful natural areas of our coast. An environment, where nature gains strength before the human being. Peace, relaxation and tranquility, that is what the cliffs, mountains and islands surrounding Bermeo offer. Video of Bermeo.
Bermeo and its surroundings give us spaces worthy of photographing and recording in our retinas. For our part, we have followed our custom of complementing the words and photographs of this article on what to see in Bermeo with a brief audiovisual. A video, which we hope will help you get a more realistic idea of what awaits you at your next destination. If you like the Basque town, its culture and history, we recommend you to subscribe to our YouTube channel. We are sure that our videos will help you to discover all the experiences and places we recommend you to visit in Euskadi.
History of Bermeo.
The whale has been vital to the economy of Bermeo. At the beginning, in the XIV and XV centuries, whales were fished in our own waters, in our coasts, watching each one of the specimens from the natural watchtowers that surrounded the towns of our coast. But this situation was changing until our arrantzales were forced to travel to Newfoundland to be able to fish whales. If you are interested in knowing the way of life of all those people who traveled the world to fish whales, if you are interested in knowing what they drank and ate during the trip, what they took advantage of their fishing or what those galleons were like, we recommend you to visit Albaola
Bermeo has always been linked to the sea and fishing, a tradition that has been maintained over the centuries and is reflected in the coat of arms of the town by a boat fishing for a whale. In fact, today, the fishing industry continues to be one of the pillars of the town’s economy. But this is not an isolated fact, the successful career of the Urdaibai trawler also bears witness to the fact that Bermeo was one of the most important ports in the Basque Country.
Although whales are not fished nowadays, these gigantic specimens are still one of the great attractions of our coast. And the fact is that the trips to the high seas to enjoy their company have become one of the most successful experiences in Bermeo. If you are interested in these boat routes, we recommend reading our article on whale watching in the Basque Country. A sea route that is part of the boat routes in Urdaibai that we have already mentioned.
How to get to Bermeo.
To get to the center of Bermeo we can make use of both private and public transport, yes, private transport gives us more freedom to visit every corner of Urdaibai, you choose. The orography that surrounds Bermeo makes the road access to Bermeo are roads with mountain profiles, roads not suitable for people prone to dizziness.
- Public transport: Public transport is present in Bermeo through Euskotren (train line Bermeo-Bilbao) and Bizkaibus (bus line A3527 from Bilbao). These are the two most used means of transport by the people of Bermeo.
- Private transportation: When choosing our route, we must take into account that we have 2 options, along the coast and inland, both with a lot of charm.
-
- The inland route: The inland route runs from the town of Mungia to Bermeo through the Sollube mountain via the BI-631 road. 18 kilometers of asphalt that we recommend to do in 2 stages (Mungia – Alto de Sollube – Bermeo), stopping between sections to enjoy the views from the back garden of the Cannon restaurant. A delight for the senses!
- The coastal route: The coastal route linking the municipalities of Bakio and Bermeo, offers us some unique places, places of which we highlight San Juan de Gaztelugatxe or Cape Matxitxako, two of the jewels of our coast. On this occasion, the road we have to use is the BI-3101 and has a total distance of about 12 kilometers.
Where to park in Bermeo.
Bermeo has several parking lots near the town center, one at the port and another near the cemetery. Both parking lots are free of charge. However, both are close to the old town, an area that only residents are allowed to enter. Be careful, as the fines for entering the old town with a car are heavy.
As you can see, Bermeo hides everything that the Basque town once was, a small corner of our coast that we consider a must visit. We hope this article on what to see in Bermeo will help you plan your getaway to this magnificent place. Remember that you can use the comments system below these lines to send us your questions and suggestions. We will try to respond as soon as possible. Ondo pasa!
