Pol Pol, a ferruginous source (with high iron content) located at the foot of the mountains Larrano (981m), kurutzeta (1,214 m), Elgoin (1,243 m) and Anboto (1,331 m), encourages us to make a nice family route in the Natural Park of Urkiola. A route that runs along a forest track of compacted stone and earth, which allows us to reach our destination comfortably and quickly. Although the route is not very attractive, the fields of Pol Pol, the fountain and the imposing figure of the Anboto massif, surprise us with a picture postcard setting. A postcard that we are sure that you will immortalize through photographs and videos. You can reach Pol Pol by different routes, you can also extend the route to reach the summit of one of the nearby peaks, but do not worry, we will tell you everything with details and signs. Before doing this route (or after) we recommend you to visit the Sanctuary of Urkiola and the viewpoint of the 3 crosses. 2 of the most emblematic corners of the area that we encourage you to visit today. Route to Pol Pol from the Sanctuary of Urkiola.
When you follow this route we advise you to follow the different signs that you will find in the vicinity of each of the Urkiola parking lots. Elements that indicate the way to follow to reach our destination, Pol Pol. In any case, you should know that the route that we recommend today starts from the back of the Urkiola Sanctuary.
We will take a forest track of cement, earth and stones that we will not leave until we reach the Asuntze pass. There is no way to get lost. Here, the fields of Pol Pol and the crest of Alluitz receive us with an impressive panoramic view.
The signs indicate that to our right, we find the famous Pol Pol spring, our destination. This spring located at the foot of Mount Anboto surprises us with the amount of iron in its waters. These same waters join a few meters later to the Azunza river, dividing the Pol Pol fields in two.
If this objective is not enough for you, we recommend that from the Pol Pol fields you take the path that goes to the left to climb to the Larrano refuge. The path is narrower and steeper, but the panoramic views over Elorrio, Abadiño and Durango make it worthwhile. Of course, forget to walk the ridge that leads to the top of Mount Alluitz, it is very dangerous, we do not recommend it.
The return can be done by Urkiolamendi, a nicer but also harder route. If you choose this option, you must take the path that starts from the side of the refuge that we find next to the track, near the Pol Pol fountain. Remember that there are tables around the Urkiola Sanctuary. A very attractive option to enjoy sandwiches or food brought from home. Spending the day in the Urkiola Natural Park can be a great plan for the whole family. Are you ready?

Sanctuary of Urkiola.
The religious temple that we find in the port of Urkiola, was built in honor of San Antonio Abad and San Antonio de Padua. A sanctuary that has made the name of the port its own. Next to it, in one of its gardens, we find a very special stone, a rock formation known as the meteorite. Legend has it that if we turn this stone clockwise three times, we will find a partner. For this reason, many people make pilgrimages to Urkiola with the sole purpose of finding love.

Mythology.
Mythology is especially important in the Urkiola Natural Park. A great example of this can be found in the gentiles, the lamias or Mari. The latter is perhaps the most emblematic mythological figure in Urkiola. Legend has it that the goddess Mari lives in one of the many caves found in the Urkiola massif, on Mount Anboto. A character that has been linked for centuries with the figure of mother earth. It is said that if the top of Mount Anboto is covered with clouds, it means that Mari is at home.
