The 12 bridges to see in Bilbao.

The estuary has always been the main artery of the city, but also one of the biggest natural barriers of Bilbao. Its presence has forced its inhabitants to build bridges to join both banks, which is why, at present, we find more than 12 bridges along the course of the Nervion as it passes through the capital of Bizkaia.

  • Frank Gehry Bridge: We start with the most recent creation, the bridge named after one of the people who changed the destiny of Bilbao: Frank Gehry, the architect of the Guggenheim Museum. This bridge that connects Deusto with the future island of Zorrozaurre is a small tribute to the Canadian architect.

  • Euskalduna Bridge: Built in 1997 by Javier Manterola, this bridge links road and pedestrian traffic between Sagrado Corazón and Botica Vieja using part of the old Euskalduna shipyards as support.

  • Deusto Bridge: The Deusto Bridge is one of the most peculiar of this list, and it is a drawbridge that gave way to the huge cargo ships that sailed upriver in search of ore and other materials. This work of architecture and engineering by Ignacio de Rotaeche and José Ortiz de Artiñano was inaugurated in 1936.

  • Pedro Arrupe Footbridge: This pedestrian footbridge links two large areas of Bilbao, the Guggenheim Museum of Bilbao and the University of Deusto, or what is the same, the Abandoibarra promenade and the University Avenue. Built with steel and wood, this footbridge, named in honor of Pedro Arrupe y Gondra, a Bilbao priest who came to occupy positions of great importance within the Company of Jesus, is one of the most popular spots for photographing the estuary.

University of deusto, pedro arrupe bridge

  • La Salve Bridge: The most curious thing about this bridge is the origin of its name, and is that, when the ships entered the estuary to reach Bilbao, this was the first place from where they sighted the Virgin of Begoña, the amatxu Begoña, place from where the sailors used to sing the Salve. It was inaugurated in 1972 by the engineer Juan Batanero. At present, it is one of the most international bridges of Bilbao due to the jumps that are made every year from its highest part. The so-called Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series, impressive.

La Salve Bridge, Bilbao

  • Zubizuri or Calatrava Bridge: Its name, Zubizuri, means “white bridge” in Basque. A pedestrian bridge, designed by Calatrava, represents one of the most striking bridges in the center of Bilbao. This footbridge that joins the Campo Volantín with Uribitarte has been the protagonist of great complaints by the bilbaínos and bilbaínas due to its bad aging, and it is that, this creation of Calatrava has had more than one inconvenience.

  • Arenal Bridge: One of the most central of this list. Its location next to buildings such as the Arriaga Theater, the Concordia Station or the first skyscraper of Bilbao, is one of the most used bridges today.

  • Bilbao City Hall Bridge: Formerly known as Begoña Bridge, this lift structure was a necessity during the 1920’s due to the great expansion of the city. This structure links the center of Bilbao with the neighborhoods of Begoña, Zurbaran or Santutxu among others, the upper part of Bilbao.

  • Puente de la Ribera: It is a pedestrian bridge that connects Marzana and the Casco Viejo of Bilbao, a structure that replaces a wooden bridge that existed in the past and that had the name of San Francisco. This structure by Fernando Arzadun was inaugurated in 1939.

  • San Antón Bridge: We leave for the end the best of them, the San Antón Bridge, an emblem of Bilbao. It is said that its origin predates the creation of the town itself, a space from which all trade between Bizkaia and Castile was controlled. In other words, a historic bridge.

San Antón Bridge, Bilbao

  • Miraflores Bridge: The highest bridge (45 meters) not counting the Bizkaia Bridge, the Hanging Bridge. Created by engineers Juan José Arenas de Pablo and Marcos Pantaleón in 1995, this bridge represents one of the entrances to Bilbao from the A-8 highway.

miraflores bridge, Bilbao

We must bear in mind that with the creation of the new island of Zorrozaurre, this list of bridges in Bilbao will increase visibly, since the current project includes the construction of up to 3 bridges that will connect the island with the mainland. In any case, if we take into account the path of the estuary from the San Antón Bridge until it joins the waters of the Bay of Biscay, we should add two new structures, the Róntegui Bridge and the Bizkaia Bridge or Hanging Bridge.

3 industrial souvenirs what to see in Bilbao.

The Bilbao of yesteryear, gray and industrial, has practically disappeared, completely changing the landscape that we find on both sides of the estuary. Unfortunately, there are very few industrial icons that we have preserved today, here are the 3 most notable.

  • Euskalduna: The current Euskalduna Palace is nothing more than a shadow of the Euskalduna Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Company that used to occupy this place, and this company, better known as Euskalduna Shipyards, became one of the most important companies in Bizkaia. Founded in 1900, the shipyards barely lasted 85 years in operation, because, due to the different agreements of annexation to the European Union, the naval sector was reconverted into a space where there was no place for this type of companies. There were many incidents involving the workers, who, against its closure, led a relentless struggle in which, unfortunately, there were deaths and injuries. Today, only the dry docks and the Carola crane remain.

palacio-euskalduna-desde-la-ria

  • Etxebarria Park: Etxebarria Park, located in the upper part of the city, has another of the memories of that historic and industrial Bilbao. In the center of this park, we find a large chimney in memory of the companies that located in the past in this area. Nowadays, Etxebarria is a leisure area, where in Aste Nagusia the barracas are located and from where many people enjoy the fireworks. We must say that Etxebarria Park has impressive views of the Old Town (at its feet) and the Abando area.

Etxebarria Park

  • Miribilla: Miribilla, keeps under its feet a large number of subway galleries. A mining complex, that although today is in disuse, in the past represented one of the most important industrial areas of Bilbao. These mines are remembered today by means of a furnace.

Oven and wagon of Bilbao la vieja, industry

We would have liked to find many more converted industrial spaces in the streets of Bilbao, but unfortunately this is not the case. If you like the industrial history of the capital of Bizkaia, we highly recommend a visit to the Mining Museum of the Basque Country.
