Armintza, coastal neighborhood of the municipality of Lemoiz opens its doors by sea and land to discover one by one the charms hidden in this corner of Bizkaia.
Our travels throughout the Basque Country have led us on several occasions to Armintza, either to enjoy its gastronomy or its nature. Neighborhood of the municipality of Lemoiz, framed in the region of Uribe Kosta, allows us to enjoy nature in its purest state while we enjoy the local gastronomy. This municipality, once a faithful defender of the Basque coast, had a battery of two cannons, which, unfortunately, today it is not possible to contemplate since they disappeared in the 19th century.
In the past, Armintza had a strong fishing industry, among which we highlight the shrimp trawler, the pickle industry and the salting factory, all of them, great promoters of the local gastronomy. A gastronomy known for its good seafood and fish that has evolved to adapt to new markets.
The Santo Tomas de Armintza fishermen’s guild, famous for its artisanal fishing (hooks for fish and traps for shellfish), brings to the tables of this town and its neighbors (Plentzia, Gorliz and Bakio) a great variety of seafood represented by lobsters, crabs and barnacles. Unfortunately the fleet of this guild, divided between the ports of Plentzia and Armintza, has diminished quantitatively, making its port leave behind those moments where fishing boats were the majority to become a port where pleasure boats gain importance, a process that we have already experienced in many other ports of the Basque coast.
Armintza, what to see, what to do, where to eat and how to get there.
This humble urban center does not have great tourist attractions but its small fishing port, its gastronomy and its nature help this corner of the Basque coast to have a charm that is difficult to avoid.

Many of the local restaurants are an ideal place to try a good fresh fish or seafood, but we want to recommend the Begotxu Restaurant, a restaurant of all the life where menus of yesteryear and current menus go hand in hand to provide service to all generations of Biscayans. The fish and seafood of the Begotxu Restaurant are synonymous of success although we must not lose sight of the great giant escalope of name “Begotxu” that lately presides over each one of the tables of this restaurant.
We recommend reading our article: Begotxu Restaurant, a classic of the Biscayan coast.
