Enjoy the Getxo-Armintza route, an easy, beautiful and suitable for all ages route that shows us the cliffs of the coast of Bizkaia.

In previous articles we have already talked about the 3 coastal routes that we can do around Bilbao, but this time we are going to expand the information we gave you about one of them, the Getxo – Armintza route. In that article we referred to this route as the Getxo – Sopelana route (from the aixerrota mill in Getxo to the beaches of Sopela), that route is a small part of the one we are telling you about today, and if we do not have time it may be the best option, since both towns have good public transport connections.

The route between Getxo and Armintza is one of the most used routes by the Bizkainos to walk, a route, which together with the ascent to Gorbea has become a classic Bizkaino. This coastal route will surprise us and will make us fall in love with it. In it, we will enjoy the coastal towns of Getxo, Sopela, Barrika, Plentzia, Gorliz and Armintza (Lemoniz), coastal towns where the Bizkainos enjoy fishing and water sports such as surfing. If you are looking for film landscapes, cliffs, wild beaches or history, this is your route.

6 villages of great interest of the route along the coast of Bizkaia.

Throughout our journey we can find several places of interest, we will try to summarize them by classifying them for each of the villages that we will find on our way:

Getxo: One of the largest municipalities of our route and therefore in which we can find more places of interest. In short we can say that in Getxo we must see the Bizkaia Bridge or Hanging Bridge, the promenade of the great villas, the aquarium, the old port of Algorta, the mill of aixerrota, the lighthouse of the galea, the golf course of neguri and of course, its beaches and cliffs. All these places of interest can be found without moving from our route and in the order that we indicate.

Sopela: This municipality is very popular among surf lovers, in Sopela we can enjoy several beaches where surfing is much more than a sport, it is a way of life. La triangu or el peñon are two bars with a surfer atmosphere that we can find on the beaches of Sopela, 100% recommended.

Sopela

Barrika: Perhaps one of the wildest and least inhabited of all the areas mentioned above, its small stone coves are continuously lashed by the waves of the Cantabrian Sea, creating a pleasant atmosphere and sound for our senses. In Barrika we can have a drink in the northern gulf, a classic in the summer evenings. We leave you a video in which you can contemplate the incredible coves with which it counts:

Plentzia: A fishing village with a lot of charm of which we must emphasize its estuary, estuary that bears the same name as the municipality of which we speak. The swaying of its boats will make us fall in love making our walk much more enjoyable. Its old town is worth seeing and enjoying, we can take a detour and enjoy the typical pintxo pote in the old town of this beautiful town… Plentzia estuary

Gorliz: Nature and history, this is how we summarize the municipality of Gorliz in three words. While crossing the municipality of Gorliz we will have the opportunity to enjoy nature at the farm of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia or recover part of the history of Bizkaia while walking between bankers and trenches created along the coast of Bizkaia in an effort to protect us from the enemies that came by sea.

Armintza: Its fishing port and its gastronomy are very popular throughout Bizkaia, an end that honors the beauty of the entire route.

If we want to do the whole route we must book the whole day, but if we do not have time to do it we suggest other options such as Getxo- Sopela or Sopela-Plentzia. Remember that this route is a route that we can customize to our liking, depending on the time we have to do it. The worst section that we will find will be the one that joins Barrika with Plentzia, if you want to do part of the route we can omit this section.
