Route by the mouse of Getaria.
At present, access by motor vehicles is prohibited on Mount San Antón, which makes this space a perfect leisure and recreational area for a route. In fact, a Local Path (circular) runs through Mount San Antón. As you know, the local trails are marked with white and blue colors. Some marks that we encourage you to follow.
The route that we present today has no loss. It is as simple as following the road that starts at the end of the pass. A simple and beautiful walk that attracts thousands of people to the coast of Gipuzkoa. The network of curves that we find in the initial stretch of the route leads us to the first of our destinations, the Getaria lighthouse. Although we can not access it, we can enjoy the different viewpoints that surround it.
From this point, we have the option of taking the stairs or the road. We recommend you to follow the road itself. This will lead us directly to a square where we find an old steamroller from 1931.
From here, we must turn right and continue climbing. During the journey to the top we find several viewpoints. The views are impressive. After walking about 200 meters, we reach the top. There we find the building known as Katxapo. Also the geodesic vertex.
As you know it is a circular path that allows us to discover the mouse of Getaria by different places. We recommend you to start the descent by a different route. This way you will be able to discover places like the Aldamar Park, spaces that we had not visited during the ascent. If this route is not enough for you, we encourage you to consider other options such as the route between the towns of Getaria and Zarautz. Do not forget to enjoy the gastronomy of Getaria!

History.
Mount San Antón, or Getaria’s mouse, was not always attached to the land. And the fact is that before the construction of the seawall in the fifteenth century, Mount San Antón was an island. The highest island in the Basque Country. A geographical element that protected Getaria for centuries from the different meteorological inclemencies. The human being, took advantage of this quality and strengthened it with the different dikes that we find today. A space that has historically been occupied by fishermen’s markets. In fact, although after the construction of the different docks in 1919 this activity was moved to the new facilities, there are still some fish markets at the foot of Mount San Antón.
Above the old fish markets, on the slope of the mountain, there were historical buildings such as the hermitage of San Gregorio or the hermitage of San Pedro Ugarte. Nowadays none of them are still standing. During the different wars that Getaria suffered, the San Antón mountain was strongly fortified. In fact, the remains of several structures that were part of the different Carlist Wars have been found. Among them, the spaces where the batteries that pointed to the town were located, places that have been taken over by nature creating fantastic viewpoints from which to contemplate the historic center of Getaria.
Panoramic views.
Mount San Antón was once the highest island of the entire coast of Euskadi. A natural vantage point from which to contemplate a large part of our coastline. This is how it has been since ancient times and how it is today. A strategic space, which was formerly used to monitor the arrival of storms, ships or whales. Today it is still a spectacle. On sunny days, it is possible to enjoy the coast of Iparralde (French Basque Country) up to the majestic hermitage of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. We encourage you to enjoy the sites of the batteries that were used during the different Carlist wars. Today, they have become places from which to enjoy beautiful panoramic views. We hope you like them.
Getaria Lighthouse.
The Getaria lighthouse is one of the main protagonists of the Getaria mouse. Located halfway up, at one end, next to the cliffs, this building was built on the remains of the chapel of San Antón between 1813 and 1862. This 21-meter high lighthouse has accompanied thousands of sailors on their journey home. Next to it, we find the old lighthouse keeper’s house, today uninhabited. Unfortunately the access is restricted, we have to be content with reaching its vicinity.
Watchtowers of the mouse of Getaria.
The mouse of Getaria has 2 watchtower buildings arranged in different spaces. The aforementioned Getaria lighthouse and a small hut popularly known as Katxapo (20th century). From both, the watchmen controlled from the possible galleys (or corsair ships) that could reach Getaria to the appearance of the coveted whales. In the first case, the fishing boats were sheltered in the port, while in the latter, the sailors went out in search and capture of these giants that for centuries were the main economic activity of Getaria. Although the surveillance of storms, corsair ships and whales was one of the main concerns and responsibilities of the watchmen, it was not the only one. They also controlled the arrival of foreign ships, gave the alert to any shipwreck and controlled the coming and going of ships from neighboring ports. Interesting, isn’t it?
