Parque Lineal del Nervión, a simple and pleasant greenway around the Nervión River, a perfect plan to enjoy the weekend with the family.

The Salto del Nervión, the highest waterfall in the whole peninsula, finds its continuity in the Parque Lineal del Nervión, a space that covers the banks of the Nervión River during its course through the villages of the Ayala Valley. After leaving Sierra Salvada behind, the waters of the Nervión continue their course towards the Cantabrian Sea, crossing the towns of Laudio and Amurrio, among others, the two towns connected by today’s protagonist, the greenway of the Parque Lineal del Nervión.

This greenway, has more than 8 kilometers that run in the first steps of the Nervión river towards the great Bilbao, a little traveled route that we have enjoyed with total tranquility. All the paths, bidegorris and trails that cross this greenway, are owned by the municipalities of the Ayala Valley and the Provincial Council of Alava, a small network that joins the rest of green routes of the Historical Territory of Alava.

This unfinished project aims to connect the urban centers of Llodio (Laudio) and Orduña (Urduña) through its natural route, the Nervión riverbed and its riverbank. But unfortunately, for the moment, we must be satisfied with being able to make the route to the municipality of Amurrio, the point where today they are still working to expand the 8 kilometers of greenway that currently has. In the future, this route will follow the Nervión river all the way from the Salto del Delika (Nervión waterfall) to Llodio.

The projected route, Llodio-Orduña, consists of approximately 13.8 kilometers, a route with a difference in altitude of about 100 meters in which the difficulty is minimal and the enjoyment maximum. The most popular route, Llodio-Luiando (Ayala) -Amurrio, takes us to contemplate historical structures of the environment: Romanesque bridges, small dams and ancestral mills, a set worth visiting.

Transportation: Although we opted for the car to travel to the Parque Lineal del Nervión greenway, many of the people who accompanied us on the way had chosen the train from Bilbao as a means of transport, a comfortable and economical option for all those who come to make this greenway from the capital of Bizkaia.

Heritage: This walk in Alava offers the possibility of visiting interesting elements of the local heritage such as the Monument to the Malato Tree (Luiaondo), the Roman Ruins of Aloria (Amurrio) and the bridges of Anuntzibai, Bitorika and Lamuza (Llodio).

Bridges and dams: Modern and historical bridges coexist with the small dams that we find along the route. Elements that make us make a small stop along the way to capture its beauty through our photographic gadgets. Although along the route we find several modern walkways that allow us to save the natural course of the river Nervión and continue on our way, we want to make special emphasis on the bridges of yesteryear, those of stone, those that exude charm, those that attract attention.

What to visit: The rural environment that accompanies the Nervión river corridor is full of small treasures to visit.

Sections: Although the Nervión riverbank forms a small oasis of tranquility and nature, the route has a high number of industries and urban centers, a presence that “soils” the beautiful landscape that forms the river basin. This greenway is divided into two sections, the first, in charge of linking Llodio with Luiaondo with 3.6 kilometers passable, is followed by the section Luiaiondo – Salbio train stop, north of Amurrio, a section that provides another 4 kilometers passable.

The Nervión riverbank invites us to enjoy the green areas that accompany it, a rehabilitated space to enjoy nature in calm, in peace.
