Route to the Aguake waterfall from Antoñana, a family tour to one of the most paradisiacal areas of the Alavesa Mountains.
The route to the Aguake waterfall from Antoñana is one of the most attractive walks in the Alavesa Mountains. A route of familiar character, which encourages us to walk between rivers, mountains and forests in search of the famous Aguake waterfall. This waterfall is located in the Sabando river, in the town of Antoñana, municipality of Kanpezu, province of Araba. A rural environment, where nature is the main protagonist. In order to discover and enjoy this place, we have to travel about 5 kilometers (2.5 km one way and 2.5 km return) from the fortified medieval village of Antoñana. An urban center, which together with the interpretation center of the Basque-Navarre railroad, forms one of the great attractions of this area of Euskadi. Do you dare to walk with us the route to the waterfall of Aguake?

Route to the Aguake waterfall from Antoñana.
The route starts from the center of Antoñana, from the intersection of Arrabal street and El Recon street, at the back of the church. Place, in which we find a vertical sign that indicates the 2 directions that we can take to reach our destination. And this route has a circular section at the beginning (and end) of it. In our case, we decided to continue along the street Arrabal about 300 meters more until we turn off onto a dirt track that we find on our right. This track leads us to cross the bridge over the river Sabando, the same river that shortly after we will go up in search of the Aguake waterfall. After crossing this bridge, we find another detour, this time, we turn left, it is time to go up. We continue along the dirt track for about 160 meters until we find another fork, this time we continue to the right. We continue ascending little by little for another 350 meters until we find a track on the left, we enter the forest. From this point, we must only follow the path, there are no more detours. In any case, the path is signposted at all times. In case of doubt, we recommend that you let yourself be guided by the markings and signs that exist during the tour.
This last section is undoubtedly the most beautiful of the entire route. The beech trees, the meandering riverbed, the waterfall and the vertical limestone walls make it very special. We loved it. We recommend visiting this place in the rainy season, when water is plentiful and allows us to enjoy the different pools and waterfalls that are created during the tour.
When we arrive at the Aguake waterfall, we see how the water comes straight out of the wall. Even in summer. Thus creating a small pond or pool in which all this water accumulates. Nearby, about 50 meters up the right slope, we find another large waterfall that only has water in the rainy season. On the way back, we have several options, cross the river (using the stones that we find in it) or return by the same path by which we came. If you decide to cross the river, be very careful, the stones are slippery. On the other bank, you will find an irrigation ditch next to a narrow path that leads back to Antoñana. In our case, we returned the same way. Although this time, we passed by the hermitage of the Virgen del Campo, making this last section of the route circular.

The active tourism companies authorized by the Department of the Environment meet next to the Oteo mill. This is the place where the descent of the Aguake ravine begins. A ravine, short but intense, that allows us to enjoy an environment of great natural beauty. During the tour there are several rappels and jumps (if conditions permit). In case you are interested, we recommend you to use our contact form to help you plan your experience.
Where to park in Antoñana.
Antoñana has a small parking lot in its lower part, outside the walls, at the entrance of the town center. And is that we must remember that in its interior we hardly find space to park, even less, in that maze of narrow streets that make up its urban center. In case this parking lot is full, it is also possible to park next to the interpretation center of the Basque-Navarre railroad and use the crosswalk that crosses under the road to reach the center of Antoñana.
