Txakolingunea, the Txakoli temple

TOP ACTIVIDADES

Past and future come together in Txakolingunea, a space created to show the history, elaboration and culture of Txakolí.

The Txakolí, one of the most traditional and emblematic wines of our people, has its own museum in the Biscayan municipality of Bakio, in the heart of the Basque coast, Txakolingunea. This museum is presented to us in the framework of the network of museums and food and wine centers of Euskadi, a network where we find 7 great spaces that deserve a big place in our agenda:

  • Igartubeiti Farmhouse Museum.
  • D’Elikatuz Zentroa Center.
  • Cheese interpretation center.
  • Confectionery Museum, Gorrotxategi.
  • Museum of the Basque cider, Sagardoetxea.
  • Wine theme center, Villa-Lucia.
  • Txakoli Interpretation Center, Txakolingunea.

Outside Txakolingunea

Outside Txakolingunea

The Txakolingunea Txakoli Interpretation Center, a center managed by the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, occupies a modern building that can be found at the entrance of the town of Bakio, next to the fronton. If we arrive at Bakio from Mungia, option that we recommend, we can park the car in the parking lot that we found a little before on the right hand side, it is free and ample.

The building makes us believe that it is a narrow and small space, quite the opposite of what we find inside, wide and open spaces, do you dare to discover it?

The name of this Museum, Txakolingunea, is the union of two words in Basque, Txakoli and Gunea, if we make a literal translation into Spanish we could translate it as “Place of Txakoli”, a very appropriate name for a space where every detail of the history of this great wine is kept.

Curiosities found in Txakolingunea

What is the origin of the word Txakoli? Although there are different theories, the researcher José Uria Irastorza’s theory gains strength. The term Txakoli, arose from a Basque phrase, a phrase with which the baserritarraz (Basque villagers) answered when asked about the amount of the harvest of the year, they answered, “etxeko ain” which means “just enough for home”, these words derived in “etxekolain” to end in “chacolin”.

Do you know how to get to a “chacolin”? In the past, the path to the Txakoli was marked with laurel branches, branches that were placed on trees and posts to mark the way to the farmhouse.

In this museum, we found 3 points that caught our attention and that we are going to break down to better understand the essence of Txakolingunea:

  • Txakoli
  • Bakio
  • Txakoli wineries.

The Txakoli.

Txakoli, that typical wine of the mountains and the coast of the Basque Country, that wine rooted in our culture and traditions, stopped being a drink created only for the consumption of the farmhouse many years ago, adding professionalism to the sector and creating high quality wines, characteristics that have raised the Txakoli to the top of the wine sector.

The Txoko for Txakoli tasting

The Txoko for Txakoli tasting

Although Txakoli has always had a very important presence in Basque society, at the end of the 19th century Txakoli began a decline that led it to become a second-class wine. At the beginning of the 80’s, thanks to the Association of Txakolineros of Bizkaia, the Basque Government and the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, Txakoli began to recover the importance it never wanted to lose.

Txakoli is not only presented in the form of white wine as many believe , did you know that there are 3 types of Txakoli?

White Txakolí: Made mainly with the two recommended white varieties, Hondarrabi Zuri and Hondarrabi Zuri Zerratia. It represents more than 95% of the total production.

Rosé Txakolí: Made with a minimum of 50% of the recommended Hondarrabi Beltza red variety.

Txakolí Tinto: Made from 100% Hondarrabi Beltza grape variety.

As you can appreciate the Gipuzkoan municipality of Hondarribia, has the privilege of having a variety of vine that bears its name, a very traditional and representative variety of our beloved Txakoli, a name that has earned its name for being the birthplace of the Hondarribi Zuri and Hondarribi Beltza grape (For those who do not know our language, zuria means white in Basque and Beltza means black).

Conditions to preserve a Txakoli:

  • Humidity around 70%-75%.
  • Constant temperature, between 12 and 14 degrees.
  • Prevent sunlight from entering, as ultraviolet rays damage the wine.

The txakoli produced in Bakio belongs to the Bizkaiko Txakolina denomination of origin, one of the three denominations of this wine that exist in the Basque Country:

  • D. O. Txakoli de Getaria (1989)
  • D. O. Txakoli de Bizkaia-Bizkaiko Txakolina (1994)
  • D. O. Txakoli de Álava-Arabako Txakolina (2001)

Bakio.

Between cliffs and mountains we find this small town on the Basque coast, a geographical location that gives the town one of the best climates to produce a great Txakoli. Beach, mountains, gastronomy, history and Basque traditions, a town that is undoubtedly worth visiting and enjoying.
