During the visits to the different Txakoli wineries, it is usual to visit 3 different areas: the vineyards, the winery and finally a small “txoko” where you can taste the wines of the house. Although in this list we only mention 6 wineries, we offer guided tours for groups in practically all the wineries of Euskadi, you only have to tell us the characteristics of the winery you are looking for, we will take care of everything. In any case, the brands that we mention as the best Txakoli wineries in Euskadi have an impressive level.

Urkizahar Txakoli winery.
Small, family-run, ecological and located in Beizama, in the heart of Gipuzkoa. Simply impressive. This family project is based on the concept of micro winery, an initiative in which, without exceeding the extension of their vineyards, they seek the excellence of their wines. In addition, we should mention that this small farm only produces organic wines, thus committing to care for the ecosystem that surrounds us. This winery located between 350 and 450 meters above sea level, is considered the highest winery of Txakoli, making these wines aged in the interior of Gipuzkoa even more special. As you can see, Luisja and his team are clearly committed to a different, unique product. A goal for which they work with passion and perseverance. In this case, remember that we only offer guided tours for small groups due to the dimensions of the winery itself.

Although in reality the Basque chef is only one of the 5 partners who created this marvel, his fame has made him become the visible image of the txakoli firm K5. A fact that, together with the quality of its txakoli and the location of its winery, has placed it in the second position of our particular list of best txakoli wineries. Txakoli Astobiza winery.
The Astobiza winery is the only representative of the D.O. Arabako Txakolina that we find in this list. A great winery, which shows why none of the Basque provinces that produce Txakoli should be underestimated. After touring their vineyards and learning about some of the typical curiosities of the climate of the area, they surprise their visitors with different wines made in a way we have never seen before. History of Txakoli.
This wine produced in Euskadi and elaborated fundamentally with grapes of the autochthonous varieties Hondarribi zuri and Hondarribi beltza, continues gaining followers every day that passes. These facts are due to the great change that has taken place in the agricultural exploitations of our towns. And it is that, we must remember, that, the Txakoli, was in its beginnings a broth that was produced in our baserris (farmhouses in Basque) and that was destined only to the own consumption. Fortunately, with the passing of time, this aspect has changed drastically, becoming a reference in the international wine market. Currently, the terms “chacoli”, “txakoli” and “Txakolina” are protected by law, by European regulations, making it impossible to use these traditional terms to refer to wines produced outside the Basque Country. In any case, it is advisable that every time we consume Txakoli, we pay attention to the seal of the D.O. There is no better guarantee.
- Why did Txakoli almost disappear? Industrialization, plagues such as phylloxera or the entry of wines from abroad meant that Txakoli was on the verge of disappearing. Luckily, a handful of lovers of our land, fought to keep this tradition of the Basque people alive. Eskerrik asko!
- What is Txakoli? A wine from the historical territories of Araba, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa. A very personal wine, which, although in 99% of cases it is presented as a white wine, there are cases such as Txakoli Gorri de Bakio, in which it is presented as a red wine. Did you know that the word Txakoli comes etymologically from “Etxeko ain”, the right thing for home in Basque?
- What is the difference between the wineries of the Rioja Alavesa and the Txakoli wineries? In our humble opinion, generally speaking, Txakoli wineries are more familiar, more personal. On the other hand, the terrain in which they are located clearly marks the future of each one of them. The former are located in regular terrain, inland, while the latter are located on slopes, next to the sea. This means that the wines have a totally different character. However, all of them produce wines to take off your hat. Quality before quantity.
Most of the Txakoli wineries in the Basque Country share many of the same characteristics. Among all of them, we highlight their location in the middle of nature, the cultivation of trellised grapes, the incredible wines they produce and the family tradition that many of them carry. Some aspects that we can see and enjoy in the different wineries that we present today. All the wineries of Txakoli respond to the regulations established in each of the Denomination of Origin to which they belong. These facts mean that the txakolis of each of the producing provinces have their own peculiarities. Now, what does each D.O. say about Txakoli? As we have already mentioned, Txakoli was born as a wine created and consumed at home. A wine of poor quality and difficult to drink, which gradually disappeared from our farmhouses with the appearance of the industry. An effect, which we also find in Basque cider. Thanks to a small group of txakoli lovers, in 1989, a new era began, defining new Denominations of Origin and creating the rules of what txakoli should be, a high quality wine that reflected the soul of our green vineyards.
- What does the Arabako Txakolina D.O. tell us? Created in 2001, Araba was the last Basque province to create its own Txakoli Denomination of Origin. This certification only covers the region of Ayala, Aiaraldea. A region that currently consists of 5 villages: Amurrio, Llodio, Artziniega, Okondo and Aiara. It is said that in the 9th century there was already a pronounced production of Txakoli in Araba, being an important part of the agriculture of the area. Although it is one of the less known Txakoli Denominations, although it has a small number of wineries, we have to say that they produce high quality wines.
- What does the Bizkaiko Txakolina D.O. tell us? Created in 1994 and with more than 400 hectares of vineyards, this Denomination of Origin includes the municipalities of the regions of Enkarterri, Uribe, Duranguesado, Urdaibai, Lea-Artibai and Arratia-Nervion. According to what we are told, the Txakoli of Bizkaia is characterized by the peculiarities of the territory. The grapes are grown on hillsides at an altitude of between 50 and 200 meters, in areas that are difficult to access, making it necessary to harvest the grapes by hand, with care and selecting each grape that is processed. Within this appellation there are wineries that produce sparkling and late harvest wines, which, due to their differences with traditional Txakoli, cannot be labeled with this term. This Denomination of Origin is distinguished from the rest by the classification of Txakoli, establishing up to 4 different types: white Txakoli, barrel-fermented white Txakoli, rosé Txakoli and red Txakoli. However, it should be noted that, at present, white wines predominate over rosé and red wines. Another of the aspects on which they make special emphasis is the millenary tradition of the vine in Bizkaia, being present since the XII century for own consumption.
- What does the Getariako Txakolina D.O. tell us? This Denomination of Origin created in 1989 is the oldest of all the ones we can find nowadays, the pioneers of the professionalization of Txakoli. At the beginning, it only covered the vineyards located in the municipality of Getaria, but in 2007 it extended its domains to the whole province of Gipuzkoa. Currently, Gipuzkoa has more than 400 hectares of vineyards located mostly (90%) on the coast. From Gipuzkoa, they define this white wine as young and fruity, medium alcohol content and with some acidity. A different wine, which should be served fresh, allowing the carbonic needles present in it to come off. A traditional wine, which, together with some good salted anchovies or some tuna in oil can make us enjoy one of the best hamaiketakos (eleven o’clock lunch in Basque) that exist. In Gipuzkoa, the native variety, Hondarrabi Zuri, currently occupies 95% of the hectares, while Hondarrabi beltza, the red variety, occupies the other 5%. The best way to identify a Txakoli from Getaria is to be guided by the Guarantee Seal that we find on the bottles, thus ensuring that the wine we are tasting complies with all the rules and regulations of this DO.
Many of you will disagree with our choice of the 6 best Txakoli wineries, after all, not all of us have the same tastes. To all those who disagree with our choices, we encourage you to mention your favorite Txakoli wineries, remember that you do not need to register to comment on our articles, we are waiting for your opinions!
