Cliffs, castles, forests and sea, a dream called Ruta Domaine D’abbadia in Hendaye.
Hendaye, the first coastal town of the French Basque Country, gives us the opportunity to make a small route in which we will enjoy as children and that we will remember all our lives. A route, where we will discover several of the most important and interesting attractions of this French Basque municipality.
The Abbadia Castle and the huge rock formations called “bizkiak”, Basque for “twins”, give an extra charm to this small route, an environment that allows us to transport us to the past.
Attractions of the Domaine d’Abbadia route:
- Abbadia Castle.
- Bizkiak.
- Views of Hendaye.
- Views of Hondarribia.
- Views of a large part of the coast of the French Basque Country (on sunny days).
- A beautiful mix of green meadows and the sea.
To make the tour a real experience, we recommend that you check the opening hours of the Abbadia castle to visit it. Would you like to know more about the Domaine d’Abbadia tour?
Route Domaine d’Abbadia de Hendaye.
This route through the domains of Abbadia Castle runs through a protected environment of 65 hectares in which cliffs, green meadows, forests and the sea go hand in hand. A space of the French Basque coast, very pleasant, which can be accessed from the town of Hendaye (it is the best option if you are staying in this town), or on the contrary, if we use the car, we recommend parking in the parking lot for this purpose. The parking lot is located about 500 meters from the main entrance of the castle, past the castle on the right hand side. Attention all those who have vans or motorhomes because the parking has a maximum height of 2 meters, but it is free.
Once we forget about the car, we just have to cross the road and go through the wooden gate that begins our route. All along the way we will find bridges, viewpoints and cliffs, a walk without slopes, easy access and with incredible views, a 100% recommended walk.
As in our beloved Geoparkea, along the entire stretch of coastline of this walk it is possible to contemplate the passage of time through the rocky layers that make up the flysch. Remember that in this biological reserve it is forbidden to take plants, use bicycles or go with dogs, even if they are tied up.
Throughout the year it is possible to enjoy different activities that take place at the entrance of the Domaine, at the Larretxea farm. These activities (free of charge) are perfect for families to complement their visit to the castle with Larretxea activities, a perfect plan for all those who want to enjoy the Basque coast in a very complete way. enjoy!
The route is not suitable for all audiences, since during its course we find stairs: few, wooden and with great separation between them, making it difficult access to all those with reduced mobility.
