This museum covers a very extensive space of time, in it, we have the opportunity to discover the history of Bizkaia from prehistoric times to the present. Arkeologi Museoa, is composed of 3 floors divided by the different periods covered by the museum. Inaugurated in 2009, in the old quarter of Bilbao, next to the Miguel de Unamuno square, above the subway exit of the same name, Arkeologi Museoa occupies the old building of the train station that linked Bilbao and the Biscayan town of Lezama.

  • Weekdays: From 10:00 to 14:00 and from 16:00 to 19:30. Monday closed.

The permanent exhibition is divided into 2 floors that cover from the Paleolithic to the Modern Age, exhibiting large pieces from the Neolithic, Iron Age, Ancient Rome and the Middle Ages, a permanent collection of more than 500 pieces. The order of the visit is to go up to the last floor and go down until you reach the exit.

Exhibition: The Museum of Archaeology of Bizkaia, Arkeologi Museoa, keeps in its interior elements found in important archaeological sites throughout Bizkaia, a clear example of this are the elements found in the cave of Santimamiñe, one of the most important sites in the entire Basque Country.

The remains of the Santimamiñe cave are accompanied by the Urbieta wreck, a 15th century ship found in 1998 under the earth and mud of the Gernika estuary. This vessel, 12 meters long and 4 meters wide, is the only one of its kind and period found along the entire Cantabrian coast. The oldest pieces are more than 75,000 years old and come from Barrika and Lemoa.
