Crusoe Treasure, the winery under the sea.

TOP ACTIVIDADES

Protected by the Cantabrian Sea, Crusoe Treasure, the world’s first premium underwater wine, emerges from the depths.

Conceived from the passion and love for the sea, from the depths of the heart, Crusoe Treasure is born, a dream come true. This winery, the first underwater winery and artificial reef in the world, is located in the Basque Country, in the bay of Plentzia, in the waters of the Cantabrian Sea. At a depth of 20 meters, at the mouth of the port, where the waters of the Plentzia estuary and the Bay of Biscay meet, we find a yellow buoy that indicates the location of the winery, 500 square meters of seabed, where life makes its way between bottles. A new reef is being born, the Crusoe Treasure family is growing.

Crusoe Treasure, the force of nature and gastronomy.

As you already know, nature and gastronomy are, together with our culture and history, two of the most important axes of tourism in our land. This time, together, they create an authentic experience that we want to make known, the Crusoe Treasure experience.

Wine: A wine born in the best vineyards in the world (Rioja, Bordeaux, Ribera de Duero …) and raised under the rough waters of the Cantabrian Sea, 2 characteristics that help, and much, to make this wine is very special. The looks of a biologist (Lic. Anna Riera), an oenologist (Antonio Tomás Palacios) and a manager (Borja Saracho) come together at the bottom of the sea, 3 looks 1 single goal, to create a unique product, a quality product, Premium.

  • The only underwater winery in the world.
  • Wines created with carefully selected grapes.
  • Bottles that fight all year round against the force of the Cantabrian Sea.
  • A very complete sales pack (a hammer and a book accompany the bottle on its journey to your home).
  • Special advantages for visiting the winery.

Where to buy it? Although they work with suppliers all over the world, the most convenient option is from their website.

Crusoe Treasure bottle detail

Winery: After a long road of learning about tides, currents, marine life and the evolution of wine under the sea, the Crusoe Treasuse winery is in a sweet moment, a moment in which its hard work is rewarded with awards, regular customers, visits and a lot of demand. Located in an area of 500 square meters on the seabed, the winery has structures designed with very clear objectives: not to pollute, to create life under the sea and to protect the bottles.

Crusoe Treasure BuoyCurrent productivity is around 6,000 bottles, but the winery has the capacity to store 10,000, a figure that is not enough to satisfy the curiosity of many to taste a wine aged under the sea, a wine of film.

Location: We found the facilities of the winery that concerns us in the coastal town of Plentzia. Crusoe Treasure has a small “txoko” on land (Paseo de Plentzia), a boat for extraction and tastings (Port of Plentzia) and an underwater winery (Bay of Plentzia), 3 elements that complement each other perfectly when it comes to giving the end user a very special experience, unique in the world.

The Bizkaia Geopark, Gorliz

How to get to the winery? The only way to get to the winery is by boat, but first we must get to its small office located on the seafront of Plentzia, on the border with Gorliz. We can reach these two towns located 20 kilometers from Bilbao and 15 kilometers from the airport of Bilbao (Loiu) by metro, bus or private transport. In case of using the Bilbao Metro, remember that it ends in Plentzia, on the other side of the estuary of the same name, from where we have a nice walk along the banks of the estuary to reach the beaches of Plentzia and Gorliz, where we will find the office we mentioned. We can also get there by bus from the town of Getxo on the A3451 line of the Bizkaibus company (Areeta – Armintza). Finally, the most comfortable option, private transport, we recommend parking in the parking lot of Gorliz beach, a parking lot that in summer becomes payable.

Transformation of the seabed: Due to the currents derived from the Plentzia estuary, the seabed of Plentzia Bay changes from sand to stone approximately every 3 months, a fact that makes it practically impossible for any creature to inhabit this seabed. With the appearance of Crusoe Treasure, this fact becomes history, the structures where the bottles are stored, create a stable “floor” where marine life can settle, an artificial reef. Crusoe Treasure carries out periodic monitoring to evaluate biodiversity and the effects of climate change, monitoring that has helped to count the more than 1,500 species that can be found today in this winery. A good example of this are the shark eggs that were found embedded in one of its structures.

The winery is both an artificial reef and a natural laboratory, helping universities and institutions to understand life under the sea in more detail. A fact that is seen to perfection in their logo, an image in which they play with bottles and scales.
