Recommendations and frequently asked questions.
Before flying a balloon for the first time, we believe it is important to make a series of recommendations. In the same way, we believe it is convenient to answer the most frequently asked questions that you ask us before flying. We hope you find them helpful.
- What time do balloon flights depart? The best conditions to start the flight are at dawn. Around 8 in the morning, when all the balloon flights that take place in the Basque Country start. Remember to be punctual.
- What clothes should we wear? Although the temperature is somewhat higher inside the balloon, it is recommended to wear clothes and shoes according to the time of the year in which we make the flight. Remember, comfortable clothes and footwear.
- Are reservations required? Yes. Reservations are essential. In fact, we recommend booking more than 1 week in advance. You can book your flight online here.
- Is there an age limit for ballooning? This experience is suitable for all ages. However, you should know that pregnant women and people with delicate health conditions are not allowed to fly.
- Can children under 8 years old fly? This is not really an age limitation, but a height limitation. Remember that you need to be taller than 1.20m to be able to see the scenery above the basket.
- Do children pay the same as adults? No. The rate for children up to 12 years old is 120€.
- Does it make you dizzy to fly in a balloon? No, flying in a balloon does not cause vertigo. In fact, the height of the flight will be determined by the winds with which we fly that day. Depending on its characteristics, we will fly a few meters above our mountains or soar through the clouds.
- Is it possible to fly with pets? No.
- Do you have to stand for the entire flight? Yes, chairs and stools are not allowed. If you need a seat, please consult us before booking.
- What happens if the weather is bad? The days of heavy rain and fog as well as wind speeds above 15 km / hr are factors that will prevent us from flying. In case the weather forecast does not allow the balloon flight with all the guarantees, it will be postponed with 48 hours notice. Safety first.
- How high does the balloon fly? Balloons have no directional control, they depend entirely on the wind. With the altitude is more of the same, because although they can go up and down to catch the different air currents that surround us, the maximum height depends on the winds with which we travel.
Best time to fly in a balloon in the Basque Country.
Each season of the year offers the visitor a completely different vision than the rest of the year. Neither worse nor better, just different. That is why the best time to fly in a balloon in Euskadi depends on the tastes of each one. Each of the flight zones that we present in this article change completely in each season, offering totally different landscapes. How does a hot air balloon work?
Hot air balloons are composed of 3 main elements that can be seen with the naked eye: the sail, the burners and the basket. All these components have a very precise task and characteristics. We are going to describe in detail all the elements that make up hot air balloons in the following lines. Attention!
- The sail: The sail, the synthetic fabric that holds the hot air inside, is undoubtedly the largest and most eye-catching part of a balloon. A component, which is usually very colorful. Its purpose is to retain the hot air inside.
- The burners: Located just below the canopy, in the center, the burners and the propane from the canisters to which they are connected make it possible to heat the air inside the canopy when the pilot needs it.
- The basket: This large wicker cavity is responsible for housing the passengers of the hot air balloon. An element that varies in size depending on the group of people to be transported.
These are the most important parts of a balloon, but there are more. Examples are the suspension ropes, the parachute, the opening rope, the different flight instruments and many other utensils that, for Joseba and his crew, are essential to be able to pilot this huge mass of air. Perhaps now it is easier to understand why the flights take place early in the morning. It is not a whim. We are totally dependent on the air temperature to take off. First thing in the morning, before dawn, the atmosphere and the ground have cooler temperatures that allow us to fly with greater peace of mind since the wind is usually smoother and more constant.
History of the hot air balloon.
In 1783, the first official flight with people on board took place. It was in a balloon, in Paris. The brothers Joseph and Étienne de Montgolfier were the ones who built that first balloon that after flying over the city for more than 20 minutes landed on the outskirts of the capital of France without any mishap. Logically, the hot air balloon changed the way of understanding the world, considering it one of the most important inventions of that time.
