The area where today we find the fishermen’s guild, the fishing port or the sports center, was once one of the many strips of the Basque coast. It is, therefore, land reclaimed from the sea. In this sense, we must indicate that the fishing port that we find in Santurtzi, protected by the outer docks of the Bay of the Abra, allows the safe mooring of the last fishing boats of the town. And it is this picture, that of the fishing boats moored in the port, one of those that we like most of Santurtzi. History of Santurtzi.

The history of Santurtzi has large doses of tradition and legend. According to legend, the church of San Jorge was originally a monastery built by English monks who fled from the conflicts in their land. It was around this church, where little by little the current municipality of Santurtzi was formed. Moreover, it is said that the name Santurce is an indirect derivative of the Latin Sant Georgi, the name of the original monastery. A word, from which it was later derived to its Basque form, Santurtzi. As for the written documents, we must indicate that this locality appears for the first time in a document written in Latin in the year 1075. As you have seen, Santurtzi has not always been the official name of this fishing town. In fact, it has changed many times. According to some experts, the initial name may have been Sant Georgis, followed by San Jurdic, Sturse, Santuye, Santursi, Santurce or Santurtzi. Currently, since 1983 (published in 1989 in the Official Gazette of the Basque Country) the official form is Santurtzi. Making Santurce disappear from all institutions, entities and official writings. fishing boats moored in santurtzi, what to see in santurtzi, what to see in santurtzi

Song from Santurce to Bilbao.

One of the most emblematic songs of Greater Bilbao has Santurtzi as its protagonist. Although the lyrics mention this fishing town with its old name (Santurce), it tells us about one of the most deeply rooted traditions of Santurtzi, eating sardines in the port. Here is part of the lyrics.

From Santurce to Bilbao
I come all along the shore,
With my saya rolled up
Showing off my calf,

I come hurrying and running
Because my corset oppresses me,
I go shouting through the streets

Who buys!
Fresh sardines

My sardines
How delicious they are
They are from Santurce
I bring them myself
