Wine tourism, the type of tourism aimed at enjoying the wine activity, is in fashion. When hearing about wine tourism in the Basque Country, the first thing that usually comes to mind for tourists is the Rioja Alavesa and its vineyards. A common mistake, which in time we must rectify, since the rest of the Basque territory also has a wide wine culture and tradition. Located in the neighborhood of the same name, in the municipality of Muxika, Bodega Berroja is much more than just vineyards and a winery. It is the dream of its owners come true, a dream based on our culture, our traditions, our way of being and living.
Bodega Berroja produces txakoli under the denomination of origin “Bizkaiako Txakolina”. The denomination of origin Bizkaiko txakolina or chacoli of Bizkaia, was originated in 1994 with the objective of “to make known, to value and to protect this ancestral wine”. 3 objectives that thanks to the effort of the Bizkainos producers are being fulfilled with more than enough.

–Good txakoli, the main reason, a good product, without this, we could not go ahead with the article. Thanks to its location, the climate and a great human effort, excellent wines are obtained thanks to the autochthonous vine variety Hondarrabi Zuri, perfectly adapted to our type of climate and geography, and it is the one that is largely responsible for the success of the wines of the Berroja winery.
We could define the txakoli from Berroja winery as an explosion of aromas, a fresh product with a pleasant bitter end, in short …. a paradise for our palate. We must mention that the txakoli of Berroja winery is fully identified as a TERROIR, indicating that it is this peculiarity, by the interrelation of multiple factors such as climate, physiographic and environmental factors, which after all are those that give the txakoli unique and special characteristics.

–The environment, the winery and the vineyards are located in the heart of Urdaibai, one of the greatest natural paradises of Bizkaia. The views from the winery do not disappoint and neither does the rural atmosphere that permeates the whole area, a unique place to rest and gather strength.
On the guided tour, we will be taken to a magical place. Among vineyards, baserris (Basque farmhouses) and nature in its purest state, we will enjoy a unique 360 degree view. In the opinion of turismovasco.com we should rename this place as the balcony of Urdaibai in Bodega Berroja.
We should not miss the opportunity to enjoy the traditional architecture of the farmhouses surrounding the winery. An architecture that faithfully reflects the complex structure that had the “baserris” of that time.
–Guided tour of the winery, Berroja winery offers us a very exclusive visit, since for each group that visits the winery, they close it to focus on that group, giving personalized attention and high quality. In this way, the visit becomes exclusive and without any disturbance from other visitors who come to the winery.
The visit lasts approximately 1.30 hours, during which the txakoli elaboration process is explained in detail. The visit can be broken down into 3 different sections, all of them of great interest:
- Short walk through the vineyards of the Berroja winery
- Explanation of the txakoli production process
- Tasting of the different wines offered by the Berroja winery.
During the guided tour, small details are pointed out about the land where the winery is located, the way txakoli is made and many other points that make the visit more personality and swing.
–Possibility of complementing with other tourist activities, being in Urdaibai, the starting point of active tourism in Bizkaia, you can perform multiple tourist activities. –Possibility of eating at the winery, Berroja winery does not have a commercial restaurant, but you can taste and nibble local products accompanied by a good txakoli of the house. If you would like a more substantial meal, reservations can be made, as long as there are more than 20 people in the group and the reservation is made in advance. The dining room and its large window will give us a pleasant atmosphere in this “small” private txoko.

–Berroia, a brand that, in its orgaloleptic level, maintains the general line of the Berroja winery.
–Aguirrebeko, perhaps the best known brand within the Berroja winery products. Its winemaking characteristics are:
- Manual harvesting in boxes
- Destemming
- Cold skin maceration
- Drained and decanted at 10ºC.

- Separate processing of the two varieties
- Fermentation in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 12ºC.
- Light clarification Amicrobic filtration 0,45 u
–Berroja, the most spoiled broth of the house. This variety is obtained in the same way as Aguirrebeko but has its own personality:
- Grapes from selected plot
- Fermentation in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 13ºC.
- Aged in tank on its fine lees for 8-10 months.
