Bodega K5, an unforgettable winemaking experience in the town of Aia, in the province of Gipuzkoa.
At 300 meters above sea level, in a magical setting, between farmhouses, vineyards and forests, the K5 Winery, the winemaking project that Karlos Arguiñano and his 4 partners have in the municipality of Aia, makes an appearance. The road that takes us to the winery, narrow and with a lot of unevenness, lets us glimpse that it is a road of little affluence, a road, destined to connect the farmhouses of the mountains of Aia, a path, that leads us to one of the most special points of the municipality. Located in the shelter of the slopes crossed by the Andatza Diseminado Barreiatua road, the K5 winery is a small haven of peace from which we can see a large part of the coast of Gipuzkoa.

The K5 winery is a project made up of 5 lovers of the Basque people, a group in which the name of the famous Basque chef, Karlos Arguiñano, has a strong presence.
Bodega K5, the dream of 5 friends.
Bodega K5 is an oenological space where you can taste one of the best txakolis in the Basque Country, a quiet, unique and special place. Would you like to know it with us?
Views: The K5 winery overlooks the Cantabrian Sea to offer one of the best panoramic views of the coast of Gipuzkoa. The hillside on which K5 is located is home to vineyards, fields and forests, an incredible natural collection that stands out for its wide range of colors. Thanks to the altitude at which the K5 winery is located (300 meters), you can easily recognize the Ratón de Getaria and the port of Orio, two emblematic areas of our coast, 2 places, perfect for tasting a good grilled fish.
Building: The K5 and K pilota txakolis follow in the footsteps of their species, abandoning the baserris of yesteryear to take refuge in the modern wineries of today. The structure of the K5 Winery, designed in 2006 by the Catalan architectural firm Alonso, Balaguer y Arquitectos Asociados, houses facilities that are equipped with the most advanced technology. The building forms a semicircle integrated into the mountain, a serious, noble and functional structure in which cement and glass stand out.
Visit: The visit to the K5 Winery follows the same route that the clusters of Hodarrabi Zuri grapes take during the harvest season, from the vineyards to the winery. At the entrance, a sign shows the orientation, delimitation and names of the plots: soroberri, eguzki, beko…all of them names in Basque that refer to the characteristics of each one of them. After the route through the vineyards, we enter the guts of K5 to learn the secrets of the wines produced there, the destemming machine, the macerators, the stainless steel tanks and a modern bottling and labeling machine help us to understand the process of elaboration of the Txakoli K5 Arguiñano and K Pilota. The end of the visit is the hamaiketako (11 o’clock snack in Basque) that they prepare in the main area of the winery to taste the wines that they elaborate, K5 and K Pilota, simply perfect, the best moment of the visit.
Attention: Nagore, the person who attended us during our visit, introduced us to the project with passion, transmitting her respect and admiration for Bodega K5. A personalized visit, full of anecdotes and dynamics that made us feel at home, 100% recommended.
Responsibles and partners: Although the authentic and genuine Basque chef, Karlos Arguiñano, is the visible image of Bodega K5, he shares responsibilities and obligations with 4 other friends, 4 dreamers, who like him, wanted to give continuity to the wine culture of the Basque people with their project, the K5 Txakoli winery.
Vineyards: Although at first glance all vineyards look the same, there are dozens of factors that make them unique. The 15 hectares of vineyards of Bodega K5 are no exception, settled on slate and granite soil, marked by the influence of the Cantabrian Sea, the altitude, the variety and the low yield production, give us clusters different from the rest, a raw material that says it all about the Txakoli they produce.
Location: K5 is located in Aia, (a small town in Gipuzkoa located about 9 kilometers from Zarautz), on a hill, next to the Estenaga farmhouse, surrounded by forests, streams and vineyards. We recommend setting Andatza Diseminado Barreiatua, 16, as a destination in the GPS, you can’t miss it.
History and tradition: The history of Bodega K5 has as its protagonist the friendship of Abel Agirre, Julián Arruabarrena, Iñaki Burutxaga, Joanjo Landa and Karlos Arguiñano, 5 txoko (gastronomic society) companions who ventured into the purchase of 30 hectares from the Marquise de Narros with the aim of creating a Txakoli winery of their own. An adventure that began in 2006 with the construction of the winery and has been gaining followers over time. The winery, the products and everything that surrounds the K5 brand are full of small nods to our culture and history. Did you know that K Pilota pays tribute to Basque pelota? Did you know that K Pilota was presented in the Fronton Bizkaia?
Brand and products: Txakolis “K5 Argiñano” and “K Pilota”, 2 100% Hondarribi Zuri txakolis for different dishes and moments.
- K5 Argiñano: the star wine of the winery, a Txakoli with 10 months of maturation on its lees, perfect for all kinds of dishes: seafood, fish, meat, rice…
- K Pilota: the youngest of the family, a Txakoli with 5 months of maturation on its lees, recommended for appetizers and light meals.
Thanks to the new online purchasing platforms, it is possible to buy this magnificent txakoli without leaving home, in a couple of clicks. From the winery to your home. If you are curious to taste the white wine elaborated by Carlos Arguiñano, we recommend you to buy a bottle and enjoy it with family or friends. On egin!
These 2 single varietal txakolis (Hondarrabi Zuri) are present in the 5 continents and it is not surprising since they make everyone who tries them fall in love with them, as evidenced by the 2 sample cases we bought at the winery. The K5 Winery, its wines, its views and its history are well worth a visit, maybe yours?
