The route to Katillotxu begins in the town center of Mundaka. From here, we ascend gently towards the neighborhood of Goitiz, where we must use the pedestrian walkway to cross over the road that connects Mundaka with Bermeo and Sukarrieta. Once past the footbridge, we come across the first signs for the PR-BI-176 (white and yellow), which we simply follow. Although the route is clearly signposted, here are some tips that will surely help you.

1.- We go up Goitiz Bidea street and use the pedestrian bridge to cross the road that connects Mundaka with Bermeo and Sukarrieta.

2.- Follow the road for 1.5 kilometers until you reach a crossroads, then turn left.

3.- We continue for another 500 meters to the Mundaka water reservoir.

4.- We continue for another kilometer until we reach the summit of Katillotxu and the archaeological site.

5.- We pass the first archaeological feature and walk along the ridge until we find a metal gate on our left (please note that this is the only unmarked point on the route).

6.- We go through the gate and start walking down towards Sukarrieta.

7.- When you reach Sukarrieta, cross the BI-2235 road and turn left towards Mundaka.

8.- Continue another 500 meters along the road until you reach Portuondo, the perfect place to stop and enjoy some Basque cuisine.

9.- Continue for another kilometer until you return to Mundaka. End of the circular route.

Excursion to Katillotxu for groups.

At TurismoVasco, we offer group excursions throughout the year. In this case, it is an excursion to the Urdaibai region. Dolmens.

At the top, on the ridge, we find a megalithic complex consisting of five dolmens. This is a small example of Basque funerary architecture that has been excavated for study. Thanks to this, it has been confirmed that they were used for funerary purposes during the Bronze Age. Next to this archaeological complex, there are several interpretive panels that help us understand the importance of each of the dolmens. Take a look at them, it’s worth it.

Where to park.

The best option for this route is to park in Mundaka. Remember that Mundaka is one of the most visited places in Urdaibai, so if you can’t find a parking space, we recommend leaving your vehicle in Sukarrieta and starting the route from there. Both options are equally valid.
