Meet El Curry Verde, the great vegetarian of the Hondarribia Marina.

 

El Curry Verde, represents one of those Basque restaurants that, being affordable, surprises everyone who visits it. And is that, this vegetarian restaurant located in the Marina of Hondarribia, takes care of every detail of everything that surrounds it, from the decoration of the premises to the presentation of any of its dishes. Everything is thought for the enjoyment of the diner. We must admit that we are very classic when it comes to choosing our restaurants. To say that our favorite restaurant in Hondarribia is the txakoli winery Hiruzta, is enough said. We are not vegetarians. But, we have been so insisted to try the creations of El Curry Verde that we could not let it pass. We had been ignoring for a long time the recommendations of some friends from Gipuzkoa, people of good food, who, settled first in Hendaye and later in Hondarribia, have seen how El Curry Verde changed location without losing any of its peculiar charm.

As you can see, many recommendations have reached our table, no complaints. So, the time had come to put aside the turbot and chops from our plates for a day and get ready to try the highly recommended vegetarian dishes of this restaurant from Gipuzkoa. We can tell you that, even though our palates are used to other types of dishes, the sensations were very gratifying.

If you do not know Hondarribia, it is a perfect excuse to escape to one of the most beautiful villages of Euskadi, it is really worth it. Moreover, the location of El Curry Verde invites you to enjoy the lower part of the town, strolling overlooking the sea, enjoying the colorful houses of the Marina neighborhood and even to go to Hendaye by one of the 2 boats that make the regular journey between the two towns. And if you have time to spare, you can not miss the opportunity to climb to the historic center of the town, it is a magical place. An obligatory visit in every trip to Euskadi.

Many times, after hearing so many recommendations and compliments, we get the wrong idea of what to expect, thus increasing our expectations. In this case, El Curry Verde met all of them, it did not disappoint. Of course, if you are planning to visit this Basque restaurant, we recommend you to make a reservation, its dining room is not very big and it is usually in high demand. Luckily for some, the tables on the terrace and the 4 tables found in the bar area can be occupied by anyone who wants to enjoy their creations, without reservation, on a first come, first served basis.

El Curry Verde, the vegetarian of Hondarribia, is a perfect place to show all the people who believe that a good gastronomic experience in Euskadi can be summed up in some good beans followed by a good grilled fish or a good txuleton in Tolosa. There is life behind the traditional food of the Basque people, and watch out, it’s a hooking experience!

Local: Located in the marina of Hondarribia, less than 5 minutes walk from the city center, next to the sea, we find a small and cozy local aesthetic. A restaurant, which allows us to enjoy the environment without having to use any transport, without wasting time in displacements. On summer days, it is a pleasure to eat in the street, good temperature, good atmosphere and good menu, what more can we ask for? The Curry Verde is completely open, but it is easy to identify the 2 areas that make up the restaurant, on the one hand, the dining room, where we find low tables and more relaxed atmosphere and on the other hand the bar, where we find a couple of high tables and something more bustling. By the way, if you have thought about visiting the restaurant, we must warn you that many of the articles you will find on the internet do not indicate its current location, since most of them refer to its previous location at number 67 Santiago Kalea street. At present, due to the success of their gastronomic project, they have moved to a larger location in the Marina. Evolve or die.

Hondarribia’s gastronomy: The Green Curry has managed to sneak among the most attractive culinary options in Hondarribia. A fact, for which many did not even give a hard at the beginning of his career. It is very difficult to make a name for yourself in such a traditional area. Nowadays, the vegetarian food of this place, together with the pinchos of the neighborhood of the marina and the grilled fish of some of the restaurants of the zone, compose a nice gastronomic range for all the people who visit this coastal locality.

Attention: The attention we were offered at El Curry Verde was perfect. Fast and attentive service, without any kind of problems, with a smile on their face, as it should be. Unfortunately, we did not have the opportunity to meet Xabier Mendizabal and Enara Ormazabal, the people who run this restaurant in Gipuzkoa, but we did have the chance to taste their creations.

Our experience: After a beautiful morning walking the route that separates Domaine D’abbadia and the marina of Hondarribia, after having fun on the beach of Hendaye and enjoy the bay of Txingudi by boat linking the two municipalities. We got ready to taste some of the tastiest dishes of El Curry Verde. We had made a reservation, so they had saved us a table in the main dining room, on the other side of the bar, but the temperature was so good that we decided to ask if we could eat outside, on the terrace, no problem. Said and done. We ordered starters to share and a main course for each of us. As starters, blue cheese croquette, guacamole with nachos and potatoes with chipotle and aioli. All the dishes were simple, uncomplicated, but with good presentation, texture and flavor.

Green Curry, nachosAs main courses we ordered beet burger with avocado, vegetable curry and eggplant parmigiana, a nice mix of dishes among which we found options for vegans. Of all of them, we highlight the Burger, highly recommended. Unfortunately, we were so full with everything we had eaten that we didn’t have the guts to order dessert, which we will keep for our next visit.

Price: El Curry Verde does not have menus, all the dishes it offers are part of its menu. However, the final price does not differ much from a menu of the day of any other restaurant in Euskadi. Elaborate dishes with good presentation, flavor and texture at a more than decent value for money.

Plans: Hendaye, Hondarribia, Pasaia or Donostia – San Sebastian are just a small representation of all that the environment of the Green Curry has in store for us. Visiting Hendaye and Hondarribia or discovering Donostia, Pasaia and Albaola can be one of the best plans for a day in Gipuzkoa. If you travel with your family, with children, do not forget to visit the Monte Igeldo Amusement Park, it is completely different from any other you can find today. The most similar to travel in time that we find in Euskadi.
