The Gujuli or Goiuri waterfall, a waterfall of more than 100 meters high located in the municipality of Urkabustaiz, in the Cuadrilla de Gorbeialdea, attracts thousands of people throughout the year. A magical space, which together with the Salto del Nervión, represents one of the largest waterfalls in the entire peninsula. The Oiardo river rushes from a limestone massif of more than 100 meters giving life to this canyon. In one of the sides of the canyon, has enabled a small viewpoint from which we recommend that you enjoy this waterfall. It is curious to contemplate the contrast between the 2 slopes of the canyon Goiuri, one eroded and with little vegetation while the other is full of beech and other trees that form a lush forest. The Gujuli waterfall is located on the border of the Gorbeia Natural Park, a wild and rural landscape, which we recommend you to visit in every trip to the province of Araba. Very close to the Gujuli Waterfall, you will find the water mill, the church of Santiago Apostle and the different cheese factories of Goiuri Ondona. We recommend a short walk through the area and take the opportunity to buy a good Idiazabal cheese.

Gujuli waterfall viewpoint.

The viewpoint of the Gujuli waterfall is located on one of the sides of the Goiuri canyon, on the edge of the cliff. A metallic structure, from where we can appreciate the spectacle that this waterfall offers us. To arrive until this place, we must leave the car in the parking lot that we found next to the highway that unites Orduña and Izarra to later carry out a brief route of about 10 minutes until the viewpoint. The distance between the parking lot and the viewpoint is approximately 1 kilometer, round trip. We must emphasize that, although there is also the possibility of contemplating this waterfall from the other end, from the vicinity of the church of Santiago (200 meters away), we do not recommend it. In addition to having to cross the train tracks (marked with a forbidden sign), there is no safe place from which to enjoy the spectacle. The mud and the slopes that we find after crossing the tracks, make us assume a danger that is not necessary. It is not worth it, be careful.

How to get there.

There are several options to reach this waterfall, but in our opinion, the best option is to use the highway that connects Bilbao and Vitoria Gasteiz, the AP68. Once on this road, take exit 22 towards Izarra / Durango. From here, we will use the A-2521 road towards Orduña to reach the Gujuli waterfall. The parking is signposted by a sign located on the side of this road. If you do not want to pay any toll to reach this waterfall, you can go to Orduña and from here to Gujuli / Goiuri by the A-2521 road.

Guided tours to Gujuli Waterfall.

There is the possibility of guided tours to the Gujuli Waterfall and the Nervión Waterfall from the center of Bilbao. We must remember that these 2 waterfalls are separated by about 30 minutes by car, which allows us to enjoy 2 of the largest waterfalls of the peninsula in the same day. One day, a local shepherd named Urjauzi decided to steal the mirror. After using it to ask for all kinds of whims, the lamia discovered him by the river, under the shade of a large tree, with the mirror in his hand. When asked what his name was, the shepherd replied, “I am Urjauzi”, and at that very moment the shepherd became the waterfall we see today. Urjauzi in Basque means waterfall.
