History of Balmaseda Castle.
Over the course of its history, Balmaseda Castle featured various defensive systems. The Cerro del Castillo, the original medieval fortress, was crowned by a tower approximately 15 meters high and walls nearly 2 meters thick. The entire complex was organized around stepped walls, defensive moats, and drawbridges that protected one of the most important strategic access points between Castile and the Basque coast. During the First Carlist War, in 1835, the hill was fortified once again with a complex military structure organized into several defensive enclosures. Barely a year later, in 1836, the fortress was renovated once again to adapt it to new defensive systems, incorporating bastions and new military structures. As you can imagine, Cerro del Castillo held enormous strategic importance over the centuries.

Balmaseda Castle is also renowned for its lookout points and panoramic views. From Cerro del Castillo, you can take in much of Balmaseda’s historic district and the surrounding valley.
