The waterfall of the Barbadun river is one of the great attractions of Galdames. A natural space of great beauty, which invites us to make a nice family walk from the San Juan de Muskiz neighborhood. Route from Muskiz to the waterfall of the Barbadun River.
This simple route along the banks of the Barbadun River begins in the San Juan de Muskiz neighborhood, next to the church, in front of the Ertzaintza police station. It is here, on the bank, next to the bridge, where we enter a yellowish track. Although the route is not lost, it has several points where it is better to follow our indications:
- After starting the route, after about 250 meters, the trail is cut by a road, we continue along the crosswalk, we continue ahead.
- Approximately at 400 meters we find a fork, on the right a metal bridge, on the left a walk between orchards. We take the left option. We enter a group of houses where we must turn right into the first narrow alley we find. We continue straight on without leaving the road, going down the path that takes us directly to the underpass.
- After walking about 800 meters, we find a wooden bridge. We turn right. We enter the final stretch of the route. From here we have 1.5 km to the forge passing through a small bamboo forest that is very similar to the one we found in El Pobal. We also find the Romanesque bridge of El Pobal (XIII century).

Barbadun river waterfall.
In the 19th century, several dams were built along the course of the Barbadun River. One of these structures is the one that creates the waterfall that we present today. A small waterfall that is in our list of the most beautiful waterfalls in Bizkaia. A natural space of great value, which we recommend you to visit during any getaway to Euskadi. Remember that in summer, the flow of the waterfall is drastically reduced, which is why we recommend that you visit it during the rainy season.

Where to park.
Between the Ertzaintza police station and the soccer field there is a large parking lot where you can park your car for free. Its strategic location, 100 meters from the starting point of the tour, makes it the best option to enjoy this adventure. In any case, remember that you can also park near the bandstand, in front of the church.

Although it is a simple and short route, along the way we find places like the Tower House of Santelices, the Romanesque bridge of El Pobal (XIII century), the bamboo forest, the outcrop of Cretaceous sandstone, the forge of El Pobal or the waterfall of the Barbadun river. We must remember that in addition to these specific attractions, the riverbed itself also offers us a space to enjoy.
El Pobal Ironworks.
This forge located a few meters from the waterfall that we present today, is one of the great attractions that we find along the course of the Barbadun River. A structure built in 1504, which continues to keep its flame burning thanks to the guided tours that take place inside. Bamboo Forest.
The bamboo forest is one of the most sought-after natural spaces in the Enkarterri region. An exotic corner that surprises all those who come to the forge of El Pobal and the waterfall of the Barbadun River. The origin of this mystical place dates back to the end of the 19th century when these bamboo canes traveled from the Philippines to the Basque Country. Salmon.
Salmon became extinct at the end of the 19th century with the construction of hundreds of dams in the riverbeds of Bizkaia and Euskadi. Nowadays, the Barbadun river is, together with the Lea river, the only river in Bizkaia with a stable population of salmon. After the repopulation carried out in 1995 by the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, this highly coveted species has become one of the most common in the area. Unfortunately, there are still very few specimens that inhabit these waters.
