Cueva de Los Goros, a beautiful route to enjoy nature with the family in the Sierra de Badaia.
The Goros Cave is one of those places that attract attention. A different, unique space. A cave that gives us a walk of the most interesting. And that is exactly what we want to present, the route to the cave of Los Goros from Hueto Arriba, Otogoien in Basque. A simple route, which, starting from the town itself, following the Goros Ravine, takes us to the Sierra de Badaia to know one of the most striking caves in the entire Historical Territory of Araba.
We should point out that, although there is the possibility of a circular route to tour the cave of Los Goros, the hermitage of Santa Marina de Badaia, the Cross of Ganalto and the Collado de Olazar, our proposal is much simpler. And, in our case, we are only going to limit ourselves to a linear route to visit the famous Goros Cave. Do you dare to know it with us?
Information about the Goros Cave.
- Type of route: Linear.
- Distance: 5 km.
- Duration: approximately 2 hours (round trip).
- Attractions: Church of the Nativity, cave and barrando de Los Goros.
- Location: Cueva de Los Goros, Hueto Arriba / Otogoien, Araba, Euskadi.
The cave of Los Goros is the source of the river Laña, a river whose waters flow through the villages of Hueto Arriba, Hueto Abajo, Martiola, Mendoza and Trespuentes to later give its waters to the river Zadorra. The cave that we present today is one of the most unknown and important in the province of Araba. A cavity carved in the rock that offers us a nice and simple walk in the middle of nature.
Route to the Goros Cave.
The route to the cave of Los Goros is one of the family routes of Euskadi that we recommend on our website. A route of low difficulty that runs along the course of the river Laña to reach its source, the cave of Los Goros. This route begins in the town of Hueto Arriba, in the center, next to the church of the Nativity, a Romanesque building of the thirteenth century. Once at this point we must stand looking at the bell tower of the church from the playground that we find next to the church to take the street behind us. This street takes us directly to the forest track that we must take to begin our route. The street has several walls painted with the typical marks of the great routes (GR), horizontal and parallel red and white stripes. You can’t miss it.
Once on the dirt road, a few meters away, we will find a metal cattle gate with a crosswalk on the right side. We cross the gate and we find the first crossroads, we continue to the left. We follow the red and white marks.
We find a small bridge that crosses a stream (dry most of the year). Once we pass the bridge our route has no more detours. Straight ahead, without any detour. Do not pay attention to the marks of the GR, because at a crossroads our paths will separate.
Soon we will see the river bed, dry, parallel to the road, on our right. This riverbed is a good indicator that we are on the right track. And it is that we must go up the river until we reach its source, the cave of Los Goros.
We follow the route until we find ourselves facing the riverbed, the road crosses the river. Calm, most of the year it is dry or with very little flow. From this point the ravine and the river will be on our left.
The road goes up the mountain, we gain height, it is time to climb. It is a small slope that after crowning it takes us directly to the cave of Los Goros. Be careful because the entrance to the cave is not signposted and it is very easy to miss. The entrance is on our left, in a space where the trees disappear to make way for the stone.
Access to the caves is camouflaged by the low trees found in this area of the mountain. The path that leads to the 5 mouths of the cave of Los Goros is not very familiar to say the least. You should know that this path forks into 2, a path for the upper level and another for the lower. In any case it is not an easy access, let alone the access to the lower level. A lot of caution. Especially with the elderly and children.
Once inside the mouths of the cave we will find ourselves in front of the ravine of Los Goros. A really wild and surprising space. After enjoying this enclave is time to retrace our steps. There is no loss. It’s time to go down. We return home.
Cave of Los Goros.
Although the route to the cave is a familiar route, without difficulty and without risk, we can not say the same about the caves of Los Goros, so we must ask you to be very careful. Especially if you go with children. This cave has 5 mouths that, distributed in 2 heights, attract the attention of all the people who see them from afar.
From these mouths we can access the cavity of almost 2 km long, of which you can walk the first 250 meters. Remember that this type of caves should always be visited with the regulatory caving equipment and in the company of a guide. Our recommendation is simple, enjoy the 5 mouths and their surroundings, but do not enter inside. In times of heavy rains, occasionally, this cave is usually flooded, in these cases we must be content with glimpsing the cascade of water emanating from its mouths from afar.
How to get there.
Getting to Hueto Arriba / Otogoien is very easy, especially if we do it from the capital of Alava, from Vitoria Gasteiz. In this case, we must combine the roads A-3302 and A-4310, you can’t get lost. If we do it from Bilbao, we must take the A-68 highway to Altube, and then take the N-622, A-1, A-3302 and finally A-4310.
Location.
Hueto Arriba / Otogoien is located 20 minutes from the center of Vitoria Gasteiz, a good location to know the attractions of the province of Araba without wasting time in displacements. A perfect family route for those who are staying in the capital of Alava and want to enjoy the charms of nature.
Where to park.
Hueto Arriba / Otogoien is a small village where there is no parking. So we must leave the vehicles on the sides of the road itself, next to the houses. But please, respect the neighbors. Our recommendation is to leave the car in front of the church, since around it the road is somewhat wider and offers several places where we can park. Once parked the vehicle, the road that leads to the cave of Los Goros is very close to here. And if we look at the bell tower from the playground, we must take the street that we have right behind us, straight ahead without deviating. The marks of the GR-25 (white and red) are very useful in this case, since the road has several marks that lead directly to the forest track that we must take.
Where to sleep.
In Hueto Arriba / Otogoien we find one of the most demanded rural houses in the outskirts of Vitoria Gasteiz, the rural house Los Huetos. It is a family establishment that is accompanied by La Granja Escuela de Vitoria, a space where the youngest of the house have the opportunity to come into contact with country life. This is how the owners encourage us to feed the chickens, goats or sheep or even take a donkey ride. A different and familiar space just 20 minutes from the center of the capital of Alava, Vitoria Gasteiz. In case you want to book your stay in this rural house you can do it quickly, safely and without commissions from our reservation center, from here.
