The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Spain was built in 1997 by Frank Gehry, the Pritzker Prize winning Canadian/American architect. Gehry is known for his modern architecture, much of which seems to defy logic with its curves and curves. Unlike many architects, he completed the construction of the museum on time and within the original budget. Want to know the details of the museum?
Design: The curvatures of the museum were created using a combination of titanium, limestone and glass. The artwork protected against heat damage by the glass curtain walls that were built along the structure. The entire museum took three years to complete, was begun in October 1994, and was opened to the public on October 19, 1997. Built on the banks of the Nervion River, the water reflects nicely on the titanium walls of the building that looks more like sculptures than a conventional museum.
The Guggenheim’s design was created using computers due to the mathematical complexity of each curve. The museum’s resemblance to a ship was deliberate. If you look closely at the titanium walls, you will notice that they look like the scales of a fish, and this fish design, which can be found in most of Gehry’s work, is carried throughout the structure.
Works of art: Although the magnificence of the museum itself will leave you fascinated, don’t forget the brilliance of the works of art inside. Many of the exhibitions change periodically, giving visitors incentive to come often, although there are permanent exhibitions as well.
Simplicity: The museum is easy to navigate, which many find strange considering the complexity of the exterior. Gehry’s creativity can be seen inside the structure as visitors enter the atrium. Looking up, their eyes will be drawn to the skylight, which resembles a metal flower, allowing natural light to bathe the room. A covered pavilion terrace, glass elevators, a sculptural tower, curved walkways, and stair turrets are also featured in the interior design. The hours spent exploring this modern museum will be well worth it.
A work of art in the eyes of any tourist who wants to see and know Bilbao closely. Do not forget to visit this jewel in the crown of the great Bilbao.
