Nature, the great protagonist of the Navarre Pyrenees, attracts thousands of people to this area throughout the year. No wonder. Its easily accessible mountains surprise us with breathtaking scenery while encouraging us to explore the forests, ravines and other places that hide inside. Magical spaces that we present to you below.
What to see in the Navarre Pyrenees.
The Navarre Pyrenees surprises us with an impressive list of places to visit and enjoy. In this sense, we must indicate that although under the name “Navarrese Pyrenees” many of the pre-Pyrenean valleys of Navarre can be included, in this section we are only going to mention the attractions of the valleys of Belagua and Larra, Salazar, Aezkoa, Roncal, Erro and Arce. We hope you like them.
- Irati Forest: The Irati Forest, the second largest beech forest in Europe after the Black Forest in Germany, provides a luxurious setting for hiking. Located at the head of the Aezkoa and Salazar valleys, access to this enclave can be made both by Orbaitzeta and Otsagabia. More information in our article “Selva de Irati, the jungle of the Navarrese Pyrenees“.
- Museum of stelae of Abaurregaina / Abaurrea Alta: The small town of Abaurrea Alta, Abaurreagaina in Basque, represents the highest village in Navarra. And it is here, in this humble village, where we find Hilarriak, one of the most striking museums / cemeteries of Navarra. In this cemetery, more than 30 medieval stelae have been located, studied and enhanced. A space that shows us the life of each of the people buried here through the study of the engravings on their stelae. More information in “Museum of stelae of Abaurrea Alta“.
- Irabia Reservoir: The Irabia Reservoir is one of the most beautiful areas that we find next to the Irati Forest. A sheet of crystal clear water, which invites us to walk along its banks while enjoying the protection of one of the most important forests in Europe. A space to contemplate for hours.
- Quinto Real Forest: This impressive beech forest located in the northwest of Navarra covers the valleys of Baztan, Erro, Esteribar and Aldiudes. An environment of great natural value, which given its proximity to the old arms factory of Eugi, can help us to complete our visit to this historic enclave of Navarra. Undoubtedly a great scenery to stroll through while enjoying the scenery.
- Orbaitzeta Arms Factory: 5 km from the muga (border in Basque), in the beautiful Aezkoa Valley, we find the ruins of the Royal Arms and Ammunition Factory of Orbaitzeta. This factory was built in the 18th century over an old forge taking advantage of the incredible natural resources of the area (iron, wood, water…). We must say that this arms factory was built as an alternative to the exploitation that existed in Eugi. After many years of production, the Eugi factory ran out of resources to exploit.
- Eugi Arms Factory: In the port of Urkiaga, next to the Quinto Real Forest, about 9 km from the muga (border in Basque), we find another of the epic scenarios of the Navarrese Pyrenees, the Eugi Arms Factory. It is here, next to this monumental complex, where we find multiple information panels that highlight the value of this space where more than 500 people lived.
- Hórreos of the Pyrenean valleys: Hórreos are very common in this area of Navarra, especially in the Aezkoa Valley, where 15 of the 22 hórreos declared of Cultural Interest by the Government of Navarra are concentrated. These structures were built centuries ago with the sole purpose of storing cereal safe from rodents and the high humidity in this mountainous area of Navarra. Popular architecture in its purest form.
- Cave of Arpea: The cave of Arpea, also known as the cave of Harpea, is one of the most beautiful places in the Pyrenees. In order to reach this incredible natural enclave, we must head towards the Orbaitzeta arms factory and then head towards the Azpegi pass. Once at this point, we must take a narrow road that turns to the right until we get to a place where a family makes its impressive artisan cheese. From here we must continue walking. Be very careful, especially on rainy and foggy days. The path is slippery and narrow. However, the scenery is breathtaking, one of the most beautiful we have ever seen.
- Villages of the Navarre Pyrenees: It is not the first time we talk about the urban centers that we find in this part of Navarra, in fact, a few years ago we published an article on what we consider some of the most beautiful villages of the Navarre Pyrenees. In this sense, we encourage you to visit villages like Otsagabia, Orbaitzeta, Auritz Burguete, Burgi or Orreaga Roncesvalles. We are sure you will like them.
- Itoiz reservoir: The Itoiz reservoir has marked a before and after in the daily life of the Navarre Pyrenees. The construction of this reservoir in the 1990s left 7 villages and 3 nature reserves under water. A great loss. If you would like to know more about this space we recommend the works ‘Urpean lurra’ and ‘592 metroz goiti’ by the Navarrese director Maddi Barber Gutiérrez. 2 short films that tell the mixed feelings of the inhabitants of the Pyrenees when contemplating this huge sheet of water.
- Mountaineering and hiking: The Navarre Pyrenees offers us hundreds of places to practice mountaineering and hiking. That is why we encourage you to leave aside the most crowded areas to enjoy different but equally rewarding routes. In our case, we have not to forget the circular route that we made from the rural house Monaut, in the small village of Saragüeta. A family route, recommended by Maitina, led us to know really impressive, magical spaces. This route is known as Baratza Bidea or Route of the Maquis. Highly recommended.
- Architectural heritage: The architectural heritage of the Navarrese Pyrenees is another of the great attractions of this place. Examples of this are structures such as the Medieval Bridge of Aoiz or the church of Santa Maria de Arce. 2 constructions, which, located in the quiet and impressive Arce Valley give us one more reason to know this impressive place. The medieval bridge of Aoiz is one of the most important medieval bridges in Navarra. According to different writings, this bridge that allows us to cross the river Irati, was built in the 14th century. A work of art that has been the target of various attacks throughout history. On the other hand, the church of Santa Maria de Arce (XII century), is a beautiful example of the Romanesque architecture that we can appreciate throughout the pre-Pyrenean valleys.
- Local products: This impressive rural area produces some of the best gastronomic products in Navarre. And the fact is that, having an area of great natural wealth brings with it authentic works of art in the field of food. Traditional products such as cheese are of special interest in this area, just look at the quality of the 2 Denominations of Origin in the area: Idiazabal Cheese and Roncal Cheese.
- Camino de Santiago: The Camino de Santiago is in Navarra one of the gateways to the peninsula. Thus, as Orreaga Roncesvalles welcomes thousands of pilgrims who travel the so-called Camino Frances. More than 700 km separate this small and historic village in the Navarrese Pyrenees from Santiago de Compostela, the destination of the pilgrims. A journey that leads these people to discover the diversity of the Navarrese territory.
