Taste the grilled fish at Iribar Jatetxea, one of the best restaurants in Getaria.

Located in the main street of Getaria, next to the port and the church of the town, we find the restaurant (in Basque and hereinafter jatetxea) Iribar, a lifetime establishment where some of the authentic delicacies of the Cantabrian Sea are served. In Iribar Jatetxea they still cook the dishes in the old style, in the street, on the grill, a typical distinctive of the municipality, a custom that most of the great restaurants of Getaria keep alive.

Iribar Jatetxea, a classic of Getaria.

Iribar Jatetxea continues to maintain the good work of past generations in charge of its grills, a knowledge that is passed on from generation to generation to provide customers with one of the best gastronomic experiences in the Cantabrian Sea.

Establishment: Iribar Jatetxea welcomes us with a decoration of all the life, a traditionally seafaring decoration, simple, pleasant, cozy. The establishment, with capacity for 60 people, has 3 different dining rooms, the main dining room, located in front of the bar, the upper dining room, located at the end of the restaurant and the counterpart of the latter, located just below it. Luckily, we enjoyed our experience at a table in the lower dining room at the end, a quiet space, where we only found 4 tables, a small gastronomic txoko that made us feel like in our living room at home. The grill we found at the entrance of this classic establishment on the Basque coast adds tradition and history to its curriculum, an element that most restaurant seekers in Getaria are looking for.

Grills: The grills that are located outside the restaurants of Getaria, attract the attention of every person who walks through the streets of the town, and is that, this gastronomic element is along with Mount San Anton (the Mouse of Getaria) one of the most important claims of this Gipuzkoan town.

Why don’t the rest of the coastal towns have grills in the middle of the street? In many of the coastal towns of Gipuzkoa there were local ordinances that expressly prohibited the use of outdoor grills, an example of this is the municipality of Hondarribia, a coastal town located almost on the border with Iparralde (French Basque Country). In these grills we find some of the best pieces of the Cantabrian Sea, fish and seafood, the specialty of the restaurants in the town.

Location: Iribar restaurant is located in the Urola Kosta region of Gipuzkoa, right on the Basque coast, in Getaria, one of the most striking coastal towns in the Basque Country.

Do you want to know why Getaria is considered one of the most charming towns in Gipuzkoa?

  • Grills in the street.
  • Mount San Antón, popularly known as the “Mouse of Getaria” due to its silhouette seen from a distance.
  • Getaria- Zarautz coastal route.
  • Fishing Port.
  • Gaztetape Beach and the cliffs.
  • Txakoli wineries.
  • Canneries.
  • Historic district.
  • Proximity to Donostia-San Sebastián.
  • Birthplace of Juan Sebastián Elkano, first sailor to sail around the world.
  • Birthplace of the couturier Cristóbal Balenciaga.

The church of San Salvador (XIV century), one of the most striking places in the town center, is located next to the establishment that occupies us, a nice excuse to tour the town and learn about its roots, traditions, culture and history.

History: The Iribar family offers gastronomic and lodging services through the restaurant and guesthouse of the same name, Iribar. Although we did not have the opportunity to enjoy this guesthouse inaugurated in 1998, its rooms and location promise a service equal or better than its gastronomic counterpart. The history of this establishment began with the founder of the Iribar house, the grandfather of the current head chef, Pili Manterola Iribar. A restaurant that generation after generation continues to offer the authentic flavor of the Cantabrian Sea, the flavor of Getaria.

Gastronomic service: Although Iribar Jatetxea offers an elegant menu to which we can reproach little or nothing, it is always nice to enjoy the historic center of Getaria, a pedestrian area, where we find a good pre-meal atmosphere to warm up our engines.

The gastronomy of Iribar Jatetxea tastes of the sea, and the choices we made provided us with a 100% seafood menu: Octopus, red prawns and grilled turbot accompanied by a 100% Hondarrabi Zuri Txakoli, Jakue. Although all the dishes were exquisite, we must highlight, underline and emphasize to the point of boredom, the excellent grilled wild turbot we tasted. We have a clear menu for our next visit to Iribar Jatetxea, turbot for first course, turbot for second course and turbot for dessert, amazing.

Although we opt for strictly seafood products, we know that the land products such as sirloin steak or T-bone steak have nothing to envy to those of the great restaurants of the interior, yes, go to Iribar Jatetxea and not try their incredible wild turbot is a real sin.

Opinions: It is difficult to decide on a restaurant in Getaria, and is that, the variety and quality of all of them make us need to reflect on the restaurant to go to on any getaway to this town in Gipuzkoa. First of all, we recommend not to pay attention to the comments that we find in the big internet opinion platforms, since we will find negative opinions for all of them. This is the case of Iribar Jatetxea, a restaurant that has nothing to do with the negative comments that correspond to it.

Attention: We must take into account that the restaurant had hung the full sign, not even a pin went in, and even so, the service was correct, very good, nothing to reproach, much to thank. Familiar treatment, fast service and accurate recommendations. Before starting to prepare the main dish of the day, the turbot, they presented it to us to give our approval, a great little detail.

Price: Before going to eat at a restaurant like this, we must be clear about the gastronomic level to which we submit. And is that, many times, we find people who come to this type of establishments thinking that it is possible to eat some of the best dishes of the Basque coast and pay as if it were a menu of the day, the quality is paid. The average price of Iribar Jatetxea is around 50€, as long as you do not decline for some small whim like ours, red prawns.

Parking: Parking in Getaria is a handicap to overcome, especially in summer. We recommend parking at the entrance or in the upper part of the town, near the Balenciaga museum.
