Sakoneta beach is one of the magical spaces of the Basque coast.

Sakoneta beach is one of the most beautiful places in the Basque Country. A beach located in Deba, in the heart of the geopark of the Basque coast, which encourages us to walk along the cliffs to contemplate the phenomenon of Flysch. Nowadays, Sakoneta beach is, together with San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, one of the most visited places of our coast. Two magical places that we recommend you to enjoy in every trip to Euskadi. There are several ways to know the beach of Sakoneta, from the cliffs or from the sea, or what is the same, on foot or by boat. Our recommendation in this regard is very clear, the steep slopes surrounding Sakoneta make it difficult for the elderly, people with mobility problems and small children to enjoy this beach from land. For these cases, we always recommend the Zumaia boat tours. For the rest, we recommend you to visit Sakoneta beach from land. It is worth it, it is a marvel. Would you like to visit Sakoneta beach with us?

Sakoneta beach.

Sakoneta beach is one of the most visited areas of Euskadi. A shell-shaped beach and 450 meters long, which is completely isolated from the urban centers. These characteristics, together with the incredible geological formations that surround the beach, have turned this corner of our geography into one of the most attractive of the Basque coast. This beach is in a protected area, as it is located in the heart of the Deba Zumaia Biotope. Sakoneta beach is protected by 2 large headlands, which, together with the tidal flat that we find at his feet create that peculiar shape of shell. The waves, is another of the great protagonists of Sakoneta, and is that when the high tide reaches the cliffs, the waves hit with brutality every inch of this place. Sakoneta is usually visited by local surfers who enjoy this great sport throughout the year. We must remember that the characteristics of this beach and its location make it a space suitable only for the most experienced surfers.

How to get to Sakoneta.

If you want to get to Sakoneta beach by car, the best option is to use the A8 freeway and take exit 54 towards Itziar. From this point we must go to the neighborhood of Itxaspe. Once in the neighborhood of Itxaspe we have 2 options: to go to the viewpoint of Sakoneta or to park in the camping of Itxaspe. The first option takes us directly to the vicinity of our destination, while the second allows us to make the so-called route of the cliffs of Sakoneta (Itxaspe Errotaberri PR-GI 5001). In addition, the Basque Coast Geopark has an interpreted georoute in Sakoneta.

Walking route to Sakoneta.

If you choose to make the route on foot to know the beach of Sakoneta, we recommend that you value between the 2 options that we have commented in the previous section. If you are only interested in Sakoneta beach, the best option is to leave the car next to Mendatagaina to enjoy your destination. If you want to do a more demanding route, you can leave your car next to the Itxaspe campsite. In the latter case we will have the opportunity to contemplate places such as the caves of the cape of Aitzuri, the Andutz fault, the viewpoint of Mendatagaina, the viewpoint of Portutxiki or the cliffs and the tidal plain of the Basque coast. The route from the campsite (PR GI 5001) is marked by different vertical signs. The complete route has an accumulated difference in altitude of 355 meters and a length of 4.7 kilometers. Remember that you do not have to do the complete route, and the first option, the one that starts from the viewpoint of Mendatagaina, allows us to reach Sakoneta in less than 2 kilometers.

Great examples of this are the enigma of the Basque language and the boat route from Zumaia, the first is one of the most authentic and original guided tours we have enjoyed in Euskadi, while the second is one of the most demanded in this area of the Basque coast. Low tide at Sakoneta.

If you want to see Sakoneta beach in all its splendor, it is very important to consult the tide table. And when the tide is completely low, all those rock formations that have given so much fame to this Basque beach are uncovered. However, we do not recommend you to go down to sea level. There are many people who have been trapped by the tide.

Frequently Asked Questions.

There are many questions about Sakoneta that we often receive by email. Especially in high season. For this reason, we have decided to group the answers to all these questions in a single section. We hope they will help you when planning your getaway to the Basque coast.

  • Where is Sakoneta beach? Sakoneta beach is located in the Itxaspe district of Deba, in the province of Gipuzkoa, about 40 minutes drive from Donostia San Sebastian.
  • What does flysch mean? The word flysch is a geological concept that gives name to the thousands of layers of rock that were deposited on the seabed, and that after the collision of several tectonic plates, broke and came out into the open. If you want more information about the Flysch, we recommend you to read our article about Geoparkea, the geopark of the Basque coast.
  • How to get to Sakoneta by car? It is not possible to arrive by car to the beach of Sakoneta, but it is possible to arrive to its surroundings. From the Itxaspe campsite begins a route of about 5 kilometers along the coast. But it is not the only option. Before arriving at the campsite, on the right hand side, you will find a detour where a sign indicates the way to follow to reach the viewpoint of Sakoneta. This last option is shorter and more pleasant, but there is hardly any parking space. There is another option, to leave the car in the Errotaberri parking lot, next to the area of tables and toilets. From there you take the path that in 15 minutes takes you to Sakoneta. The latter is the easiest way to get there, and the most accessible with children.
  • Where to park to see Sakoneta and the flysch? Depending on the route you want to do (long or short), you can leave the car next to the Itxaspe campsite or next to Mendatagaina (in Google Maps it is marked as “Flysch route start”).
  • Is it possible to go down to Sakoneta beach? Although there is a path that descends to the tidal flats of Sakoneta beach, we do not recommend it. The descent is dangerous and the rising tide can play a trick on us. It would not be the first time that the Ertzaintza has had to perform a rescue in the area.
  • How to get to Sakoneta beach by public transportation? Unfortunately there is no way to get to Sakoneta by public transportation.
