Information about the Ibai Eder Reservoir.

Circular hike around the Ibai Eder Reservoir.

The trail runs all the way around the reservoir. It’s an easy, well-marked route with no significant elevation changes, making it the perfect choice for anyone looking to enjoy a pleasant walk in the heart of Gipuzkoa. The route begins at the reservoir dam, where you can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the reservoir. From here, simply follow the reservoir’s edge—you can’t get lost. Although most of the route passes through dense forests that block the views, certain sections offer lovely vistas of the reservoir and the surrounding mountains. Along the route, we encounter various features that enhance the experience: small streams flowing into the reservoir, wooden bridges, and areas with benches for resting, among others. One of the most striking points along the route is the wooden footbridge over the Ibai Eder stream, a structure equipped with a small shelter and benches that allows us to take a break during the walk.

Hydraulic infrastructure.

The Ibai Eder Reservoir was inaugurated in 1991. Today, it is a vital water infrastructure for the water supply of Gipuzkoa. The 56-meter-high dam collects water from the Ibai Eder River and other streams in the area. The water stored in this reservoir supplies various municipalities in Gipuzkoa. Over time, in addition to its hydraulic function, the area surrounding the reservoir has become a popular destination for hikers, cyclists, and nature lovers.

History and traces of the past.

The area surrounding the Ibai Eder Reservoir preserves various historical remains that attest to its use since ancient times. Caves used as shelters and burial sites dating back more than 5,000 years have been found on its slopes. You can also find the remains of old water mills, such as the Osinalde Mill. These elements show how humans have harnessed the natural resources of this mountainous environment for centuries. Interesting, isn’t it?

Where to park.

The best option is to park near the Ibai Eder Reservoir dam, next to Highway GI-2635. The loop trail that circles the entire reservoir begins at this point. As always, we ask that you respect the natural environment and do not block the path of authorized vehicles or local residents. Thank you very much!
