Visit the Basque Railway Museum and board one of the few steam trains still running on the peninsula.
This museum located in the Gipuzkoa town of Azpeitia, gives us the opportunity to know in great detail the history of the railroad in the Basque Country through a didactic and very dynamic visit. Inaugurated in 1992, the Basque Railway Museum houses one of the best railway collections in Europe. 2 pavilions, a large open space and the old Urola railroad station in Azpeitia attest to the volume of elements kept inside, 4 spaces in which we did not find a single corner in which there was not present any element linked to the railroad, quantity and quality.
The Basque Railway Museum is divided into 9 spaces.
You can download the Museum’s information leaflet on its website.
Uniform Room: Located on the second floor of the main building of the old station of Azpeitia we find the exhibition of uniforms of the Basque Railway Museum, an exhibition that makes us travel from our times to the end of the nineteenth century, an exhibition that shows the changing trends over time.
Clock room: The clock, a fundamental element in the world of railroads, finds its place on the second floor of the same building, a unique opportunity to contemplate one of the best collections of clocks in the railroad sector. Pocket, pendulum or impulse … choose your favorite.
Steam crane: The steam crane played a very important role in the development of the industry, without it, it would have been impossible to unload and load wagons or perform maneuvers, two actions that seemed very simple when you had a machinery of this size to perform them. The crane that we can contemplate was built by Grafton in 1920, it was used until 1995 and today it is still operative, a real jewel.
Rotating bridge and traffic circle: The space where locomotives change direction and change tracks, a curious place that can hardly be seen elsewhere.
Coach Houses: The Coach Houses of the Basque Railway Museum house a complete collection of locomotives (steam, diesel and electric) and wagons.
Urban Transport: Urban transport of Bilbao and San Sebastian are joined on this occasion to other urban transport such as the Zaragoza tramway. Streetcars, buses and trolleybuses make up this curious section of the Basque Railway Museum.
Electromechanical workshop: The old mechanical workshop of the Urola railroad is one of the most complete machine-tool assemblies in the Basque Country. The facility opened in 1925 is preserved in perfect condition, making its electric motor works perfectly giving life to the 16 machines of the workshop.
Transformer substation: The amazing facilities of the former power transformation plant, with its original rectification equipment, using mercury steam, reflect the most modern technology of a century ago.
The railroad universe: Railway objects of all kinds are waiting for us, discover them!

Did you know? The warning sound of CAF streetcars (present all over the world) was recorded at the Basque Railway Museum from one of the streetcars in the exhibition.
Do you want to know what we found during our visit to the Basque Railway Museum? Don’t miss our 4 reasons to visit it!
4 reasons to visit the Basque Railway Museum.
–Travel on the steam locomotive and the Zaragoza streetcar: The Basque Railway Museum offers us a trip to the past traveling along the tracks of the Urola railroad in one of its emblematic steam trains, a unique experience, which we recommend to young and old. As if that were not enough, the museum shows us the operation of the Zaragoza streetcar, a streetcar with which we have the pleasure of traveling a small part of the rails of the museum. This is the most important reason and the jewel in the crown of the Basque Railway Museum.
The season for traveling on the steam train usually starts at Easter and lasts until almost the end of the year, with the most frequent departure times being 12:30 and 18:00 hours. We recommend contacting the museum to confirm days and times.
-Oneof the best collections in Europe: Experts speak of the Basque Railway Museum as one of the best railway collections in Europe, a title that makes us think of the value of each of the elements that we find on our way.
–An environment with great attractions: The Sanctuary of Loiola, Geoparkea in Zumaia, the spa of Zestoa or the replica of the prehistoric caves of Ekain are just an example of the charms offered by the Urola Valley.
–TurismoVasco Tiketa Accreditation: Our exclusive accreditation attests to the value of the museum and the experience it offers.
The Basque Railway Museum reached in 2015 the historical record of passengers, managing to transport in its steam trains more than 14,960 people, and you, do you get on?
