Route to Urkiolamendi.
Before starting with the indications of the route to Urkiolamendi, we must make clear that the direct route to Urkiolamendi from Urkiola has a more aggressive profile than the route to Pol Pol and Urkiolamendi from Urkiola. If you are looking for the easiest route, we recommend that you go directly to the next section. From the upper parking lot of the Sanctuary of Urkiola (located at the back of the Sanctuary), we must enter the fields on the slope of Mount Urkiolamendi. We start to climb. After walking about 500 meters, we enter a kind of firebreak 270 meters long.
Once we leave the forest, we are 800 meters from reaching the summit. From this point, the views are impressive. To our left we are accompanied by the Anboto Alluitz range, an impressive mass of stone that impresses everyone who makes this route.
Upon reaching the summit of Urkiolamendi (1,011 meters), we find a small panel that shows us all the peaks around us. If the day is clear you can see much of the Durangaldea region. We recommend that you spend more than 5 minutes to enjoy the environment. It is spectacular. When descending, we can return by the same path or go down to the fields of Asuntze to enjoy the source of Pol Pol. If you choose the second option, you have to follow the forest track that starts from Pol Pol to get directly to the Sanctuary of Urkiola.
Route to Pol Pol and Urkiolamendi.
This route is much simpler and more complete than the previous option. This route begins in the parking lot that is located at the back of the sanctuary. From here we must take the forest track that will take us directly to the pass of Asuntze. It is 3 kilometers of ascent that do not have any loss.
Once in the fields, we recommend you to enjoy the Pol Pol fountain and then head to Larrano. If you are interested in this proposal, we recommend reading our article on the route to Pol Pol. On the way back, at the height of the small refuge of Pol Pol, we must turn right to head for the top of Urkiolamendi. It is time to climb.
Once at the top of Urkiolamendi, we recommend you to enjoy the views. They are impressive. After the break, we head back to the sanctuary descending through the fields that lead us to the firebreak. We are already close, we only have to cross it to get to the parking lot.

Viewpoint of the 3 crosses of Urkiola.
In front of the sanctuary, among centennial beech trees, we find a solitary Via Crucis that takes us to the viewpoint of the 3 crosses, the viewpoint of the Urkiola Natural Park. This path begins near the sanctuary, on its right side. The route, brief but intense, takes us to know spaces like the hermitage of the Santo Cristo and an old reconstructed snow. At the end of the route, we find the already famous viewpoint of the 3 crosses, in front of it rises a huge mass of stone. We recommend that you enjoy the panoramic views offered by the gorge of Atxarte.

The Urkiola Natural Park covers the Bizkaia regions of Arratia and Durangaldea together with the valley of Aramaio. It is a natural area with a great mountaineering tradition.
