Pozubaltz, Poza negra in Basque, is one of the few natural pools that exist in the province of Bizkaia. A large pool formed by the waters of the Oromiño waterfall that creates an idyllic landscape. As you can see, although people refer to this space by the name of the pool (Pozubaltz) and the waterfall (Oromiño), the name Pozubaltz is the most common and popular. Route to the Oromiño waterfall and the Pozubaltz well.

There are 2 ways to reach the Oromiño waterfall and the Pozubaltz well, on the right bank of the stream bed and on the left bank. We accessed from the right bank, descending to the riverbed from the track where we left the car. It is a somewhat steep and dangerous descent, even more so when it rains. There is a rope that allows us to descend more easily. Even so, it is not a suitable access for people with mobility problems, small children or elderly people. The other option is to park the car 110 meters before the detour to the Lapazaran txakoli winery. From there, we must cross a small concrete bridge and go up the river. It is a route of approximately 10 minutes. The path is not marked in any of the cases. We recommend you to carry trekking poles to be able to access more easily, especially in the rainy season.

Natural swimming pool.

Natural pools are not a very common element in Bizkaia, but the few that we find offer us an authentic natural paradise. Incredible spaces in which the intense shades of green are the main protagonists. A great example of this is the large amount of moss that we find on the rocks and trees surrounding the pools. In this case, the water course that comes from the Oiz mountain offers us a sheet of cold and transparent water (less in the rainy season because the mud turns the water brown). Very cold.

Other waterfalls of the Oromiño stream.

If we take the detour on the right hand side that we find after crossing the Canadian pass that exists next to the Lapazaran winery crossing, we will go up the Oromiño stream along its right bank until we reach a small but charming waterfall and a small pool. Be careful not to confuse it with the Oromiño and Pozubaltz waterfall. Although it has nothing to do, it can be a perfect complement.

What is the meaning of Pozubaltz and the Oromiño waterfall?

The Oromiño waterfall owes its name to the nearby Oromiño district of Amorebieta. On the other hand, to know the origin of the name of Pozubaltz, we only have to translate it. Pozubaltz means cesspool in Basque. A name that is due to the great depth that this well had in the past. So much, that its dark color did not allow to see its bottom.

How to get there.

The best option to reach the vicinity of Pozubaltz is to take the AP-8 freeway to Durango and then link up with the N-634, the BI-3332 and the BI-4223. Remember that although most of the route is on paved road, from the detour that we found after the nursery Ortuberri (BI-4223) we enter a narrow concrete track that leads to the winery Lapazaran txakoli. As you can imagine, it is a country road that we must travel with great caution.

Where to park.

Although there is no parking near the Oromiño and Pozubaltz waterfall, you can park right in front of the access mentioned above. On the shoulder. However, in high season, when more people visit this place, the shoulder may not be an option. In these cases we recommend you to go back until you find a place where you can park without disturbing the neighbors.
