Jakion, Basque natural products.
The collaboration with the Basque farmhouses and the handmade elaboration of the products result in one of the most valued natural ranges of all Euskal Herria. Remember that these products can be found in the small stores of our towns, in supermarkets of the chains Eroski, Sabeco, Carrefour, Alcampo and of course, in Jakion’s online store.
History: Although this company was created in 1996 with the sole objective of strengthening the muscle of the agricultural activity of the Deba Garaia region of Gipuzkoa, Jakion has been fundamental during its more than 20 years for the development of farms throughout the Basque Country. The expansion of Jakion to the rest of the Basque provinces was carried out as a response to the demands made from different points of our geography. Nowadays, Jakion extends its hand to elaborate preserves to baserritarras of the 7 corners of Euskal Herria, helping this way, to live of our land with dignity. This initiative is possible thanks to public and private capital provided by the Association of Deba Garaia together with the municipalities and producers of the region, a project for which new partners are being sought.
Brand: The name of this project represents the fusion of two Basque words “jakiak” and “onak”. The word “jakiak” means delicacy, food, while “onak” means good, so we find Jakion, something like “good food”, good nosmbre right?
Raw material: Local and quality product, that is Jakion’s bet. The raw material is essential in the elaboration of any quality product. In this case, it counts on the best suppliers of the Basque territory, our baserritarras. Behind a Jakion product there is always a farmhouse and a Basque family, people involved in maintaining the landscape and rural culture that represents so much of this land. Hazi, the organization for Rural, Coastal and Food Development, is in charge of controlling the products that are elaborated under the exclusive brands “Eusko Label” and “Euskal Baserri”. Although almost all the raw material processed comes from different farms in the Basque Country, some raw materials, such as oranges, come from abroad, in this case from Seville.
Products: Jakion offers a wide variety of jams and preserves, a range of products with which it has conquered our palates and stomachs. Jakion’s production varies around seasonal products from different Basque productions.
- Apricot jam.
- Black currant jam.
- Kiwi jam.
- Bitter orange marmalade.
- Fig jam.
- Apple and quince jam.
- Blueberry jam.
- Orange-lemon marmalade.
- Pear jam.
All Jakion products are natural, without chemical preservatives, you only need to compare the labels of their products with those of other brands to get an idea of the nature of each of them. Unfortunately, consumers are getting used to the fact that chemical products occupy a large part of the labeling of the preserves and jams we consume, a fact that can be seen in any large supermarket in our environment. Jakion is the exception that makes the rule, check it out!
Elaboration: Handmade, traditional, artisanal, no additives. Jakion’s manufacturing process uses traditional recipes where local ingredients are mixed with the only preservative they use, squeezed lemon juice, a natural preservative. The best example is their jams, made only with Debagoiena fruit, sugar and lemon juice.
Collaboration: Jakion reaches out to all Basque farmers who see in this company a practical tool through which to transform their products by creating a new one, with its own sanitary registration and a clear quality mark, the Jakion seal. The sale of each jar of jam or preserves of this brand contributes to keep alive the traditional way of life of the Basque farmhouses.
This project, closely linked to the rural environment of the Basque territory, strengthens the muscle of the first sector of our land, a tool with which its partners (public and private institutions) enhance and promote the work done in the baserris of Euskal Herria. Thanks to our visit to Jakion’s facilities, we can say loud and clear that we are proud to recommend every product of this Basque brand.
