Santurtzi Wine Month, re-educating ourselves in wine culture

Santurtzi gastronomika, the local hotel and catering association, presents year after year the Santurtzi Wine Month.

 

Great winemakers meet annually in the “Santurtzi Wine Month”, an event that attracts a large number of wine lovers to this municipality in Bizkaia. Year after year, the most emblematic buildings of the municipality host what thanks to the efforts of the local restaurateurs has become one of the most anticipated events of the year in Santurtzi.

The winemakers themselves will explain in person how to taste the wines you have in front of you. A skill, that even if you do it a dozen times is not easy to assimilate, the secret, practice, do you dare? Rinse your mouth, unclog your nose and sharpen your eyesight because we are starting.

Santurtzi Wine Month 2016.

This year, the Hotel URH Palacio de Oriol, has been the host of the Santurtziarra wine festival, a hotel with a lot of history of which you can get more information through our article: Hotel URH Palacio de Oriol, a dream palace.

This year’s Santurtzi Wine Month program is made up of 4 wineries, 3 of them from Rioja Alavesa, once again the wines of our land prove their worth to their strictest taster, the consumer.

When: Every Thursday in February.

Where: Halls on the 3rd floor of the URH Palacio de Oriol hotel.

Time: 19:00

  • 4/02/2016: BODEGAS LANDALUCE. Rioja Alavesa (Wines to be tasted: 4).
  • 11/02/2016: WINERIES ENATE. Somontano (Wines to be tasted: 4).
  • 02/18/2016: BODEGAS VALLOBERA, Rioja Alavesa (Wines to be tasted: 6)
  • 25/02/2016: BAIGORRI WINERY. Rioja Alavesa (Wines to be tasted: 4-5).

The organization indicates that the idea is to learn everything about the world of wine, including how it is produced, the characteristics of each of the wines and their subsequent commercialization.

We had the honor of attending the tasting of Bodegas Landaluce, a small, family winery but with a great winemaking tradition behind it. The representative of the Landaluce winery, Asier, was in charge of guiding the tasting, a great communicator who made the day enjoyable and very didactic. Questions such as the price of a French oak barrel (about 400€ approximately) or curious anecdotes such as the graciano grape variety (the graciano variety is not very popular in Rioja Alavesa, a variety to which winemakers respond with the pun: “Graciano? No, thank you”) made the event relaxed and fun.

Asier presented 4 wines from Bodegas Landaluce, 3 reds and a white, all of them easy to drink, grateful, too easy to digest for those of us who had a car (the organization did not have spittoons). Of all the Landaluce wines, the one that most caught my attention was the white, Landaluce Elle, with permission of “Capricho de Landaluce” (a red aged for 18 months in French oak barrels).

Undoubtedly, a winery that we point in our agenda to visit, a winery that is located in one of the most charming municipalities of all the Rioja Alavesa, Laguardia.

In short, the “Santurtzi Wine Month” is a perfect and free opportunity to learn firsthand everything that surrounds this wine so deeply rooted in our culture.
