Building: The building that houses the Puerto Zabala restaurant was once a fisherman’s house and the headquarters of the old Algorta rowing club. A building with tradition, an establishment that fits perfectly among all those “old” houses huddled on the slopes of the Biscayan coast. Upon entering, we find a small bar where fresh fish is the main protagonist.

The dining room of the Puerto Zabala restaurant, small, cozy and decorated with old fishing elements, offers a charm that today’s restaurants with large dining rooms have lost. The dining room has a maximum capacity of 40 diners, so it is essential to book in advance.

Attention: We tried to book through the contact email that appears on the website of the restaurant Puerto Zabala, an option that we do not recommend using, since the email is wrong or is unattended. We insisted, this time by telephone, and now, yes, they attended us perfectly and took note of our reservation.

We arrived 15 minutes early to the restaurant but we were attended without any problem, a detail that is appreciated. During our stay at the restaurant Puerto Zabala we were attended and advised wonderfully, no complaints.

 

The menu: The menu is divided into 6 sections, seafood, cold starters, fish, meat, desserts and wines. If you want to consult the menu you can do it through their website (prices are not available) or in the establishment, on request, since in the restaurant the waiter sings the dishes as in the old days. Most of those present opted for the same formula that we were advised: Starters to share and a good fish for the main course, ending with a homemade dessert, a formula that we recommend.

 

The dishes: For first, we opted for a salad and some grilled prawns to share, for second, a good turbot for two and for dessert a homemade cheesecake and coffee. In the salad, the tomato flavor stood out (we must take into account that at this time of the year, early March, it is difficult to obtain good tomatoes), the rest of the salad was normal, correct.

The shrimp had good texture, tender, with good flavor and good saltiness.

The grilled turbot, of good size, followed in the footsteps of the shrimp in terms of texture. It was cooked as it was in the old days, simple, without great boasts, as a good fish should be cooked.

The dessert, in this case the homemade cheesecake, was good, both in texture and flavor.

Price: Here is the big question, fresh fish from the sea is paid, forget about those fish from a fish farm that we can taste for 20 €, the good stuff is expensive. The price (we did not know it since it did not appear in the online menu and we did not ask) was somewhat more expensive than expected, the dishes we tasted were very good, but not excellent as the price indicated.

In short, the Puerto Zabala restaurant is a great establishment, with good raw material and a lot of tradition, but with a somewhat higher price than usual.
