We tried the menu of the day at Astei restaurant, a good value for money menu next to the balcony of Bizkaia.
The Astei restaurant is located in the Montecalvo neighborhood of the town of Muxika, 10 minutes by car from the viewpoint known as “Balcón de Bizkaia”, a rural environment of great ecological value where getting lost to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of urban centers can be a good option.
Although the Astei restaurant’s website indicates that its strong point is the lamb roasted in a wood-fired oven and the fish of the day, we decided to try its menu of the day, a menu that we detail below.
Meet Astei restaurant with us, 5 points to take into account.
History: The restaurant Astei was inaugurated in 1999, 3 years after its owner Resu, bought and restored his mother’s farmhouse. His great professional career in the world of hospitality supports the quality of his dishes. Fortunately, his daughter Uritz has decided to follow the same path, training at the hotel school of Leioa, the hotel school of Artxanda and finally at the great Basque Culinary Center.
Restaurant: We have the possibility of eating on the terrace, at the bar or in the dining room, in our case we decided to check the atmosphere of the dining room. We found a spacious dining room in which we saw small details that make a nod to our culture and history, details that merge with the Basque atmosphere and a good low fire. As soon as we entered it was clear the treatment towards the client, total flexibility with a constant smile.
As a negative point, we find the high voltage line that crosses the parking lot of the Astei restaurant.
Menu: The waitress told us the dishes on the menu, among which we decided to choose a good alubiada and lomo as main courses.
Beans: The bean casserole presented to us could have been the only dish of the day, a quantity not to be forgotten. Although for my taste perhaps too much broth.
Tenderloin: The tenderloin, correct, with red peppers and homemade potatoes, those that lately people in restaurants have the mania to change for frozen ones.
Dessert: With dessert I had a little anecdote that I would like to share with you. When I saw that the diners at a nearby table were enjoying a cheesecake, I decided to order it even though the waitress had not mentioned it.
She kindly told me that they were finished and that they had just made a new batch but she didn’t think they were at the right point to eat them, so I decided to have a truffle tart.
What a surprise when the waitress brought me the cheesecake, she told me to try it and if I saw that it was not ready she would bring me the truffle cake. Maybe it lacked a little to be just right, but it was good! cookie on the bottom, fruit on top and a good taste, do not be fooled by the appearance, a 20 on a scale of 10 for her!
Price: 11€ the menu of the day. A price with a good value for money, even more, if we take into account that in many places only for that bean stew they charge you more than 11 €.
Surroundings: Between Urdaibai and the Urkiola Natural Park, between mountain road curves we find the Astei restaurant. A good location to get to know two of the most outstanding natural environments of Bizkaia.
Near the Astei restaurant, we find local producers of great Basque products such as Idiazabal cheese or txakoli, we recommend the Idiazabal cheese from the Magunas neighborhood and the Berroja winery.
In short, good treatment, good product, good price and good atmosphere. Shall we repeat?
