Pinosolo Park, one of the most visited areas of Leioa, has a new attraction to visit. It is a reproduction of Basajaun, one of the most emblematic mythological beings of the Basque culture. A figure, which aims to be the first of many. After a whole year of preparations, this figure of earth, wood, flowers and stones is ready to receive visitors. Pinosolo Park.

Pinosolo Park is one of the most visited areas of Leioa. An idyllic place that has a very interesting history. And is that this park has its origin in the twentieth century, when the Aznar family bought the land to build a palace in the style of the Artaza Palace, which was built a few years earlier as the residence of the Chavarri family. We must emphasize that the Aznar family was one of the most important of the Biscayan bourgeoisie. Owner among other companies of the shipping company Sota y Aznar.

Currently, there is only one building in the entire park, a farmhouse. The same one that the Aznar family found when they bought the land. In fact, in addition to maintaining this building, they decided to plant a pine tree in front of the main facade of the house. It is said that this pine tree is the origin of the name of the Pinosolo Park. Unfortunately, after the death of the patriarch of the Aznar family, the project was never completed and the estate entered a state of semi-abandonment until the municipality of Leioa bought the land in the first decade of the 2000s. Nowadays, the farm has been rehabilitated creating a beautiful natural park of more than 7 hectares with abundant fauna and flora.

Basajaun of Leioa.

The Pinosolo Park houses the Basajaun of Leioa. A representation of this mythological being designed by Lander Álvarez de Eulate and built with recycled plants and materials. During the year that lasted its construction, Lander had the help of his partner Mikel Ibánez de Aldekoa and the gardening brigade of Leioa. The non-plant elements have been created by Eider Libano. An authentic work of art that has a triple objective: to create a tourist attraction for Leioa, to raise public awareness of the importance of caring for nature and to highlight the value of Basque culture. In fact, the municipality of Leioa does not rule out creating more plant sculptures in Pinosolo and the rest of the green spaces of the town.

How was the figure of Basajaun created?

This figure is a work of art of natural origin. And the fact is that 90% of its materials are vegetable. A figure of 2.5 m high, 3 m wide and 4 m deep that has as its main base a large mountain of earth. As you already know, it is always necessary to wait for any mass of earth to settle due to the depletion of the same. This is what made it necessary to wait a whole year before starting to place the mesh that holds the soil and the coconut fiber that covers the structure. Once the structure was created, the hair(Carex comans bronze), the face(Soleirolia), the eyelashes(Ophiopogon planiscapus), the eyes, the ears (part of a fallen cedar) and the other decorative elements were placed. The design of the Basajaun figure emerges from under the earth to take care of the Pinosolo forest.

How to get there.

You can get to Pinosolo either by private or public transport. If you choose private transport, you can park next to the skate park of Leioa. If you want to use public transport, the best option is the subway. We encourage you to use the Gobela metro stop and cross the Artaza park to get to Pinosolo.
