Respect, fantasy and admiration go hand in hand when contemplating the Oriol Palace from the staircase that precedes it.
Located in the Biscayan town of Santurtzi, practically next to the sea, we find the Hotel URH Palacio de Oriol, an imposing hotel, which instills respect wherever you look. The main building tells the story of the golden age of Bizkaia, a time when high class tourists visited the town on the advice of their personal doctors to “take the waters of the Cantabrian Sea”. The Oriol Palace was built in 1902 on a watchtower on the left bank of the Abra Bay, the same year in which Altos Hornos de Vizcaya (AHV), one of the most important steel companies in the Basque Country, was created.
The building that houses the hotel is declared historical heritage of the municipality, a building that after many years in a state of neglect, was renovated respecting every detail of the time, a palace that today enjoys its second youth converted into a hotel. Although the walls of the Hotel Palacio de Oriol have seen a large number of aristocrats and bourgeois who came to Santurtzi in search of inner peace and health, today it is a hotel suitable for all mortals, a hotel that has much to show and little to hide.
We went to the Palacio de Oriol hotel on the occasion of the Santurtzi Wine Month, an annual event organized by the hospitality association “Santurtzi Gastronomika”. The event brings together a large number of curious, experts and winemakers, an unbeatable place to taste the wines of our land, pay attention to the strengths of the Palacio de Oriol!
8 strong points of the Hotel URH Palacio de Oriol.
Views: The views of the Hotel Palacio de Oriol deserve a mention. From those rooms facing the Abra bay, it is possible to contemplate the port of Santurtzi, the cliffs of Punta Galea, Arrigunaga beach and a large part of Getxo.
Building: The hotel is composed of two distinct structures, on the one hand the Oriol Palace and on the other hand the lower part of this building, a more modern structure that fits in perfectly with the surroundings.
Surroundings: Strategically located in the town of Santurtzi, the Hotel Palacio de Oriol, allows us to discover the towns of Santurtzi, Portugalete or Getxo without wasting time in our displacements.
Surrounded by gardens and terraces stands this majestic palace, open spaces that offer a true oasis amidst the bustle of the urban center.
Communications: The subway, the commuter train, the suspension bridge and the A-8 highway, represent the unbeatable communication available to the hotel.
- Metro Bilbao: 3 minutes walking distance.
- Suburban train: 3 minutes walking distance.
- Suspension Bridge: 9 minutes walk.
- A-8 highway: 5 minutes by car.
Restaurant: I had the honor of visiting the hotel restaurant accompanied by the great journalist or equilibrist (as he calls himself) Igor Cubillo, a great connoisseur of Basque gastronomy. We were both surprised by the price of their menu of the day, 14,5€ VAT included, a price that, being a 4 star hotel, catches the attention of everyone who sees it. Unfortunately, we did not have the opportunity to try their dishes, maybe another time we will write about it, who knows… stay tuned to our social networks!
Rooms: The standard room is presided over by a large bed, accompanied by a couple of small sofas and a table, perfect furniture to admire the cliffs of Getxo from the window of our room. A large bathroom, completed the set of a room that lacked nothing.
We asked if it was possible to see a suite or Premium room, a request to which they responded by accompanying us to room 501, a room worthy of the aristocrats of 1902. Upon entering, we discovered a huge bathroom and a double bed with the best views of Santurtzi accompanied by a beautiful terrace.
Attention: Both the reception and restaurant staff treated us wonderfully, an area to which TurismoVasco.com attaches increasing importance.
URH hotel chain: The URH&Co Hoteliers hotel chain is a company that manages and operates hotels, restaurants and nightlife and is committed to quality. This chain manages the international brands Hilton and Marriot among many others, 2 brands that do not need any presentation and that give us an idea of the values they instill in each of their hotels.
Price: As you all know, hotel prices go up and down like crazy, but at this moment, the double room (2 adults and weekend) has a price of 65€ per night, a more than reasonable price for a 4 star hotel, with a history, views, and attention like the one offered by the Hotel Palacio de Oriol.
These are the most outstanding strong points of the hotel, as you can see, a good army of reasons to book a room at the Palacio de Oriol. But, you may think, what about the weak points? If we have to draw draw drawbacks to the Palacio de Oriol hotel, we only find one, the proximity to the train tracks, a weakness that is being addressed with double glazed windows. The views, the history of the building and the dedicated attention, make us have no doubts when granting our exclusive accreditation “TurismoVasco Tiketa”.
As you can see, we repeat our premise that the Oriol Palace Hotel has much to show and little to hide.
