Learn how to say thank you in Basque on your trip to the Basque Country.
They say that it is well born to be grateful, well, here we bring you an article on how to say thank you in Basque during your trip. As in all languages, there are many ways to say thank you in Basque, and, depending on the area of the Basque Country where we are, we will hear different versions of a common denominator, the word esker (thank you).
In the photograph above we can see how the above common denominator (esker) is accompanied by “asko” (mucho), thus creating the slogan that for many years has accompanied and continues to accompany the detractors of nuclear plants, “Nuklearra? Ez, eskerrik asko”, which we could translate into, “Nuclear? No, thank you very much. The words that are usually coupled with “esker” are synonyms of mucho or mil (as in Spanish mil gracias). Here are some examples of how we could say muchas gracias in Basque or Euskera.
Thank you in Basque:
- eskerrik asko
- milesker
- mila esker
- esker mila
- esker aunitz
- esker(rik) anitz
As it usually happens, sayings or compound phrases are shortened, making them form new forms, an example of this is the word eskerrik, which lately is so often used in SMS, whatsapp and new technologies in which there is a tendency to shorten the words. Of course, we must not forget that this use is not correct, so we advise you not to use it.
