Basque cake, an icon of the culture and tradition of the Basque Country.

The typical cake with the lauburu as emblem on its upper surface. A tasty cake with a light texture that reminds us a lot of another typical cake of the Basque country such as the rice cake, both filled with a light pastry cream that will delight everyone who tastes it.

This cake can be tasted in many places in the Basque Country, although the most typical is in the local fairs also called azokas in Basque, these parties are usually held on Sundays, but as everything in this life progresses and there are many supermarkets that sell it, especially local supermarkets such as eroski.

Its origin dates back to the 18th century in the town of Cambo in Laborta, when it was filled with fruit such as figs, blackberries and Itsasu cherries. From the 19th century onwards it began to be filled with pastry cream.

The Basque cake is originally from the French Basque country, it was formerly made in the Basque baserriz (farmhouses of the Basque country). It was made for the first time in the XVlll century in cambo but as in other cakes before it was made with fruits to take advantage of the products of the farmhouse. As we have mentioned before, the Basque cake is continuously reinventing itself and that is why in the 19th century it began to be made in different ways, among them the most successful one among the Basques, filled with custard.

The Basque cake leaves no one indifferent, so do not think twice and come to the Basque Country to taste a Basque cake as God intended.
