Restaurant, brewery and bar Eneperi, the gastronomic complex of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe.

The name Eneperi has been linked to Basque cuisine since its beginnings in 1994, a place where good food merges with the beauty of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe to provide a unique experience. This Biscayan restaurant is surrounded by a coastal landscape in which the towns of Bermeo and Bakio contribute all their potential, and San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, Cape Matxitxako, the hermitage of San Pelaio or the island of Aketxe are just a small representation of the beauty of these two coastal towns.

Views from Eneperi Restaurant

The building that houses the Eneperi Restaurant, the Urizarreta baserri (farmhouse in Basque), built in 1816, is another of the attractions of this Basque establishment, and not for less, its huge stone walls and endless wooden beams, leave in sight the magnificent traditional architecture of our land. Annexed to it, within the same gastronomic complex, we find the Galerna brewery, a space of more avant-garde architecture in which its large windows reveal the beauty of the Basque coast.

Eneperi Jatetxea (restaurant in Basque) has always been a culinary reference of the Biscayan coast. When tourism was practically non-existent in the Basque Country, when only the Basques went to San Juan, the Eneperi was already one of the most demanded places. There are many weddings, communions and meals that we have celebrated in this establishment, but today, we want to tell our last experience around this giant of the Basque cuisine, pay attention!

Eneperi Jatetxea.

The Eneperi Restaurant has dozens of ways to make us fall in love: for its architecture, its views, its museum, its pintxos, its decoration, its dishes… but it has always been said that half of the charm of this restaurant is due to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe and the other half to its gastronomy, to suit all tastes. The truth is that the Eneperi is a must in any trip to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe and to this little can be objected.

Location: Between beaches and cliffs, sheltered by the towns of Bakio and Bermeo, surrounded by the Cantabrian Sea and Mount Burgoa, we find Eneperi Restaurant, an oasis of peace located just 30 minutes from Bilbao. The protected biotope of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, formed by sea and land, offers spectacular landscapes that can be easily seen from the gardens of Eneperi. Take note, typical Bizkaia plan, go up to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe and have lunch at Eneperi.

Tips for San Juan de Gaztelugatxe.

  • Although in high season a small store with soft drinks, water and souvenirs is set up inside the hermitage, you should know that there is no other point with drinking water along the way.
  • Comfortable footwear is essential, the 241 steps that separate solid ground from the hermitage are unforgiving.
  • Camera is a must. The views of the coast are amazing, not taking any gadget to capture the moment is a mistake.
  • Signs are not mere ornaments, let’s respect them.
  • The road is not suitable for people with reduced mobility.
  • It is forbidden to go up to the hermitage on stormy days.

Luxury views: The illustrious neighbors of the Eneperi restaurant, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, the island of Aketxe and the Cantabrian Sea, offer spectacular views where the blue of the sea merges with the green of the cliffs. Within the Eneperi complex, there are different environments to choose from, garden, terrace, indoor dining room, the viewpoint … choose yours and enjoy! Undoubtedly, you will be facing one of the best views in the Basque Country. Stopping, resting and contemplating an idyllic landscape in good company is a must on any good trip, don’t you think?

Design: The careful rural decoration with which the Eneperi restaurant welcomes us is a small nod to the culture and history of the Basque people. We recommend that you look at every detail, in every corner, in all of them you will find something different, something special.

Museum: The Eneperi restaurant hides a museum, which, besides being the anteroom of the dining room, also offers us a small txoko where we can appreciate all kinds of tools and utensils typical of the daily life of our ancestors. A great collection of traditional Basque elements that we loved.

With children: The green gardens of Eneperi are perfect for the little ones of the house to give free rein to their desire to play and experiment. In addition, we are sure that after hearing the different stories of pirates that accompany San Juan de Gaztelugatxe will make them live this experience as a very special moment in their lives.

Service: Correct, fast, quality. Of course, we missed the explanation of some of the dishes. There were several dishes that were not clearly explained, even though they had an expensive elaboration. An example of this was the appetizer that we were served before our choices. To this day we still do not know all the condiments it contained, a pity, we attach photo and accept proposals.

Accreditation: Eneperi restaurant has from this moment on our exclusive accreditation “TurismoVasco Tiketa”. A sticker that shows the historical, gastronomic and landscape value of this Basque area.

Gastronomy: We leave the most important section for the end, the food. Although our decision was to eat at the Eneperi restaurant, we must remind you that it also has a brewery. In it, it is possible to taste typical dishes of this type of establishments such as chicken, green peppers, salads, potatoes… foods of less elaboration than those of the restaurant but not for that reason of worse quality. The name of the brewery, Galerna, honors the 1912 galerna in which around 143 fishermen from the towns of Bermeo, Elantxobe, Ondarroa and Lekeitio died. Another good option to eat in the vicinity of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe.

Views from the road to Eneperi

Our culinary experience focused on the dishes on the restaurant’s menu, dishes prepared with very good raw material and with certain variations with respect to what is offered on their website. If you decide to choose the same option as us, to eat in the restaurant, we recommend you to ask for a table with sea view when you make your reservation.

Lobster Bonbons, Eneperi

Our choice was simple, lobster bonbons as a starter and grilled wild turbot as a main course, both delicious. As for the turbot, we commented that it was perfectly presented individually, in contrast to what we are used to in establishments such as those in Getaria, where the whole piece is presented. The flavor was overwhelming, although not as juicy as we expected. We opted to have our coffee on the terrace, overlooking San Juan, an advice that we recommend you to follow to the letter.

Price: The Eneperi restaurant has been able to adapt to the different tastes and pockets of its customers. The 3 areas it offers (bar, brewery and restaurant) cover a wide range of possibilities, a wide range of prices. The bar and its varied pintxo bar is the most demanded option for those who want to experiment with our miniature gastronomy. The brewery, the second option, gives way to satiate yourself with good food without having to disburse a large amount of money in doing so. And finally, the restaurant, a perfect space for all gastronomy lovers, offers us a great version of Basque cuisine. All of this, in the same order, from cheapest to most expensive.

Value for money

In our case, we went to the interior dining room, the restaurant, the chosen menu: lobster bonbons as a starter and grilled wild turbot as a main course, a total of 87.78€ for two diners. To be clear, we should point out that after coming up from San Juan de Gaztelugatxe we felt like getting our fill of some refreshing liquid and we opted for water instead of wine and the dessert was taken on the terrace, in the garden, so this example is not the best indicator to know the price of a full menu at the Eneperi restaurant. Even so, we can say that the average price of this Basque restaurant is around 60€ per diner, the standard price for this type of establishment.

The gardens and terraces of the Eneperi enchant travelers from all over the world while the dining room does the same with their stomachs, a combination that is hard to beat. Do you know about it?
