Ibiur reservoir, a route to disconnect in the interior of Gipuzkoa.
The Ibiur reservoir is the latest and most modern reservoir in Gipuzkoa. The dam that retains the waters of the Ibiur river was built in 2008. Thanks to the construction of this dam, 63 meters high and 230 meters long, part of the supply problems suffered by the Tolosaldea region have been solved, but it has also changed the landscape completely. And it is that the sheet of water that we find next to the Txindoki mountain hides under it 37 hectares that store more than 8 cubic hectometres of water. Nowadays, it is possible to make a circular route to know this incredible area of the interior of Gipuzkoa. Unfortunately, part of the route must be done by road, we recommend you to read carefully all our recommendations. Do you dare to make the route to the reservoir of Ibiur with us?

Circular route of the Ibiur reservoir.
The Ibiur reservoir route starts at one of the sides of the dam, next to the road. From this point we will cross the dam and turn right to go clockwise around the Ibiur reservoir. In this way, the reservoir will always be on our right during the route.
We enter the forest track that will accompany us on almost the entire route. In the rainy season is usually very muddy, we recommend wearing clothes and mountain shoes. During most of the route we will enjoy some incredible reflections of the environment surrounding the reservoir. We must remember that the lands that flooded the waters of the river Ibiur belonged to the municipalities of Orendain and Baliarrain.
The route that we present today has no loss. The only detours of the route are found at the tail of the reservoir. In all of them we must take the right option. If you have doubts, we recommend that you take the reservoir as a reference, remember that it should always be on your right.
From the tail of the reservoir we start to gain height until we reach the Baliarrain road. We turn right onto the road itself to descend towards the dam. The last kilometer of the route runs along the road. Although it is a country road, it is common to find a good number of cars. Be careful.

How to get there.
To get to the vicinity of the Ibiur reservoir we recommend you to go to Tolosa by the AP-8 and A-1(Bilbao), A-1(Donostia San Sebastian and Vitoria Gasteiz). In any case, we have to take the road that joins Legorreta and Ikaztegieta (GI-2131), cross the Oria river towards an industrial area and continue towards Baliarrain. The dam is about 500 meters from the industrial area mentioned above, following the road to the left.
Where to park.
Parking is available on the side of the dam, next to the road. It is a very small space that fills up easily. Especially in high season. If you cannot find a parking space, we recommend that you park your vehicle in the small parking lot at the entrance of Baliarrain, just follow the road you came to the dam.

Recommendations and advice.
After this tour, we leave you some indications, tips and recommendations. We hope you find them helpful. If during this publication we do not solve your doubts, we recommend you to use the comment system that you will find at the end of this article.
- The last stretch of the route must be done on the road itself. Be very careful.
- The forest trail that surrounds a large part of the reservoir is usually very muddy during the rainy season, so we recommend you to wear hiking shoes and clothes.
- Although on many occasions the fog often hides the Txindoki mountain, on clear days the reflection of the Txindoki mountain on the reservoir gives us a unique perspective.
- We organize excursions, guided tours and routes for groups throughout the Basque Country, do not hesitate to contact us to organize your getaway.
- Part of the route is through a riparian forest that offers shade and coolness in the hot summer days.
- During the tour there are no fountains, so we recommend that you bring liquids to hydrate yourself during the route.
- It is possible to modify this circular route of the Ibiur reservoir to add a visit to the town of Baliarrain, but we do not recommend it, since the route would have to be along the road itself.
As you have been able to see, although part of the route of the Ibiur reservoir must be done by road, it is still a great option for people who want to enjoy this incredible natural space. In case you have any doubts, we encourage you to use the comment system that you will find below these lines. We will try to respond as soon as possible. Ondo pasa!
