Surrounded by the cliffs, beaches and forests of Azkorri, El Txirin offers us a small gastronomic oasis in an environment of high natural value.
Update: The beach bar at Azkorri beach is now closed.
In the Biscayan town of Getxo, a few meters from the beach of Gorrondatxe (popularly known as Azkorri), next to the pine forest of the same name, we find El Txirin, a bar-restaurant, which due to its proximity to the beach and its opening time acquires the nickname of “chiringuito”. El Txirin, is strategically located on the coastal route that connects the Biscayan towns of Getxo and Sopela, a beautiful walk where we invite you to enjoy the cliffs, the sea, the beaches and the towns through which it passes, a 100% recommended walk.

Are you thinking of going to Azkorri and eating a good paella? Would you like to know our opinion about El Txirin de Azkorri?
The Txirin de Azkorri, a “txiringito” to enjoy.
Location: The Txirin is located away from the urban core of Getxo, in Azkorri. A place where the hustle and bustle is left behind giving way to the tranquility of the baserris (Basque farmhouses) and cliffs. A quiet, residential place that allows us to enjoy the coast of Bizkaia pedaling, walking, swimming or paragliding, which one do you prefer? None of them will disappoint you! Try them!
Gorrondatxe / Azkorri beach: The Getxo coast has 5 beaches of different types; urban, wild, small, large, sandy, rocky… In this aspect, we can classify Azkorri beach as one of the wildest beaches in Getxo together with Barinatxe (popularly known as La Salvaje), 2 spaces, where enjoying the waves, the cliffs and the dunes is a ritual.
Azkorri beach is presented to many of you as the great unknown of the coast getxotarra, often covered by the charms and amenities of Arrigunaga, Ereaga, Areeta and Barinatxe (La Salvaje). But do not be fooled, it is further away and less accessible, yes, but its cliffs, its native dune system and the blue flag (indicative of the high quality of the water) that hovers around this beach are good reasons to escape to spend the day.
Areas of fine sand interspersed with rocky areas and dunes are home to showers, toilets, fountains, garbage cans, information panels and our great “Txirin”, thus offering the necessary amenities to enjoy a great day at the beach. It is worth remembering that nudism is allowed at Azkorri beach.
History: The Txirin of Azkorri began its journey on the Basque coast on August 15, 2013. An ambitious project that aimed to serve all tourists and getxotarraz who came to Azkorri in summer. A goal achieved despite the improper, and is that the Txirin has suffered several arson, some facts before the Txirin has risen from the ashes as the Phoenix Bird.
Premises: The premises of “El Txirin” stands out for its wooden structure painted in white and pink, colors that are present in all the elements that make up the premises, a curious terrace that makes this dining experience, a different experience. The terrace has 100 square meters covered by an awning that protects us on hot summer days. The only downside is the bathroom, a prefabricated module, in which we do not recommend spending much time.
Attractions: The beaches of Getxo and Sopela, the cliffs, the Aixerrota mill, the Neguri Golf Course and the Old Port of Algorta are some of the attractions that the location of El Txirin de Azkorri has in store for us. If you are an active person looking for new experiences, do not miss our article on Active Tourism in the neighboring region of Uribe.
How to get there: To get to El Txirin de Azkorri we can do it by private or public transport, if you choose the second option you can opt for one of the following transports:
- Metro: Berango Station, single exit. Once at the station we must walk about 30 minutes approximately.
- Bus: We must use the regular line A3411 of Bizkaibus (Bilbao-Getxo-Azkorri).
If you decide to use private transport, in Azkorri, next to the Txirin, there is the option of parking for free in the parking lot for the beach, although, unfortunately, in summer it is insufficient for all of us who travel to Azkorri.
Sunsets: Although “El Txirin” is perfect to enjoy at any time of the day, the best times to enjoy El Txirin de Azkorri are those preceding sunset, when most of the bathers have left the area, when the sunsets begin.
Price: The prices we find in the menu of “El Txirin” are somewhat higher than other beach bars on the Basque coast, but its location and quality are enough reasons to pay them.
Products and dishes: We leave for the end the most important thing, the food. Although it is a “chiringuito”, in its terrace you can taste good quality dishes. Among all of them, we recommend the sardines and paella, two simple, attractive and quality dishes.
This last time, we opted for the paella, seafood paella for 3. They served us a paella pan with good presentation and taste, nothing to envy to paellas in conventional restaurants. As for the portions, normal, neither too much nor too little, if you are a big eater we recommend ordering another dish.
The Txirin also has a barbecue area that allows us to enjoy fish and meat in a great atmosphere, are you coming?
