We are going to cite 14 sites or towns to see in the Basque Country, many of them of incalculable value, but as each person is totally different we are going to cite 14 sites of all kinds, coastal towns of the Basque Country, emblematic buildings of the Basque Country, important museums of the Basque Country and a long etcetera.
Want to know what to see in the Basque Country? Here is our list:
San Juan de Gaztelugatxe: An explosive mixture created between nature and humanity, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is located in the province of Bizkaia and is one of the coastal emblems of the Basque country along with spectacular sites such as the beach of the shell or the suspension bridge of Portugalete. You can take advantage of the visit to see the town of Bermeo as it is very close to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe.
2. Playa de la Concha: A unique beach, we are not going to fool you, it is not crystal clear waters like those of the Balearic Islands or the Dominican Republic but we cannot deny that it has a very special charm. This beach is located in the heart of San Sebastian, and I don’t think many people would argue with me if I said that it is one of the most beautiful “urban” beaches in the world.
Guggenheim Museum: You all know it, the museum attracts the attention of anyone who passes by it, I’m not talking about the works of art inside, for me the greatest work of art is the museum building itself, the Guggenheim Bilbao.
4. Portugalete Suspension Bridge: Declared a World Heritage Site, I don’t think we will see many bridges like this one today. A unique opportunity to see an example of these characteristics in full operation. We can take advantage of the visit to take a walk to the old port of Algorta, you will not regret it (flat walk, without slopes but perhaps a little long).
5. Hondarribia: Coastal town with a lot of tradition and culture, its brightly colored houses will attract and seduce us. A must visit and undoubtedly one of the towns to see in the Basque Country.
If you want to know what else to see in the Basque Country, read on and you will not be disappointed.
6. Zarautz: Coastal town of Gipuzkoa, a town with a lot of history, not many years ago it was proclaimed as the summer residence of the Spanish high aristocracy, for a reason. Town with a rich gastronomy, clear example of this, is the restaurant that has in the municipality the prestigious Basque chef Carlos argiñano.
7. Bermeo: Biscayan fishing village par excellence, we recommend the visit without any doubt, in fact you can visit the same day you visit San Juan de Gaztelugatxe as they are very close to each other.
8. Urdaibai: The biosphere reserve of urdaibai, is a unique place, where we can practice active tourism in all its forms and at the same time enjoy the view with some of its wonders, in urdaibai we can find the enchanted forest of oma or the caves of santimamiñe.
9. Butron Castle: A very special castle in the province of Bizkaia, located near tourist sites such as sopelana (15 minutes by car). Of course, if what you want is to visit it inside, do not make the trip for nothing because nowadays it is closed to the public.
10. Catedral Nueva de Vitoria: An architecturally unique building, that yes, if you do not understand architecture or the different styles and architectural periods, do not worry, you will appreciate its beauty in the same way. Inside we can find unique pieces, especially in the crypt area where we can find very important sculptures.
11. Basilica of Arantzazu: The basilica of Arantzazu is located in Oñate, Gipuzkoa, in a really fascinating location surrounded by forests and mountains. Inside we can not find all the objects of the time to which this architectural work belongs as it has suffered several fires throughout its history, but we assure you that it is worth the visit.
12. Getaria: Many of you will remember this town for the famous movie of the 8 Basque surnames, or if you like history for being the town of Juan Sebastian Elcano, the first man to sail around the world. One of the best places to taste a good txakoli and why not, eat a delicious fish. Apart from these curiosities Getaria is a fishing village that attracts people especially for the curious shape of the mountain of the town that looking at it from a particular perspective looks like a mouse.
13. Elantxobe: Bizkaia town that is literally on the coast of the Basque Country, as if it were a puzzle of houses Elantxobe is located on one of the slopes of Cape Ogoño, village of narrow and steep streets where tradition and Basque culture are very present, so narrow are its streets that public transport buses turn around on a turntable, as by themselves have no room to maneuver.
As a curiosity we leave you a video of the platform on which public transport turns around:
14. Salburua Wetland: Located in Vitoria, Salburua is one of the many green areas available in the city, walking, relaxing and especially enjoying the fauna and flora of Salburua is something that not only tourists like but also all Vitorianos.
