Izartza beech forest, route to the slopes of Mount Arrola from Orozko.

The Izartza beech forest is one of the magical forests of Orozko. A beech forest, located on the slopes of Mount Arrola, allows us to enjoy nature in its purest form. To reach this iconic place, we recommend a route that, leaving from the center of Orozko, from Zubiaur, takes us to Izartza. Do you dare to take this route?

Route to the Izartza beech forest.

The route begins next to the house of culture of Orozko from where we will walk along Zubieta street and then turn left and pass under the AP-68 freeway. Much of this route is done by the PR-BI-35, so we can be guided by the yellow and white marks to reach our destination.

After crossing the tunnels, we continue along the road for about 200 meters until we find some stairs on the left that will take us to the Church of San Juan. We continue along the road until we reach the first crossroads, we must turn left. We begin to climb. It begins a slope of some unevenness that we will not leave until practically arriving at the beech forest.

After climbing 1 kilometer, on the left, we found a somewhat peculiar area. There is a dog training center where we found an enclosure in which we were lucky enough to see wild boars.

We continue another 600 meters until we find another detour. This is the Sagarminaga neighborhood of Orozko. At this same height we find a sign that reminds us that dogs must be leashed. We continue to the left.

After walking another 850 meters we reach a detour where we find a sign indicating the Izartza beech forest, we are already close. We turn sharply to the left. We leave the PR-BI-35. The track continues for another kilometer between pines until it reaches the Izartza beech forest. It is time to enjoy the forest. After enjoying the Izartza beech forest, we can follow the path until we reach the hermitage of Santa Marina. In case of opting for this option, the route would lengthen 1 kilometer more and we would have a difference in height of 100 meters more.

Trasmocho beech forest.

The curious shapes that draw the branches of the beech trees in these forests, is due to the pruning that was done in the past. Some cuts, that although always linked to the production of charcoal, we must indicate that in some parts of Euskadi, its origin is in obtaining wood for shipbuilding. Especially whaling ships, large ships with which they traveled to Newfoundland. This fact is explained to us wonderfully in Albaola.

Where to park.

The best option is to leave the car in the center of Orozko, next to the church of San Juan Bautista or the house of culture. Although this route goes through other neighborhoods of Orozko, there is no parking lot where you can leave your car. Remember that you can also get to Orozko by public transport. The A3613 line of Bizkaibus connects Bilbao with Orozko every day of the year.
