The island of zorrotzaurre, an island for a city in continuous evolution.
Bilbao will add another great tourist attraction to its list with the completion of the Zorrotzaurre Island project, this project is the culmination of a major project carried out in recent years by the City of Bilbao, the Zorrotzaurre Island will be located on the current peninsula of Zorrotzaurre after completing the works that will separate it from the mainland.
The objective of this project is none other than to regenerate the two banks of the Bilbao estuary, the Guggenheim museum, the Iberdrola tower and other buildings with less media influence are the central axes of the project that the city council has carried out. Undoubtedly the island of Zorrotzaurre is the culmination of many years of hard work, work that is noticeable in the increase of tourists who visit us year after year.
The island of Zorrotzaurre will be located in what today is an area with a clear industrial decline in which about 500 Bilbaínos live, this area has an area of 838,000 square meters of which approximately 500,000 belong to public bodies such as the municipality of Bilbao or the Basque government. 838,000 square meters which, in the hands of the prestigious architect Zahah Hadid, will become the most sought-after square meters in the greater Bilbao area. The great novelty of this project is not the change of zorrotzaurre’s land use from industrial to residential, but the change from being a peninsula to an island.
This project divides the current Zorrotzaurre peninsula into 3 districts, south, center and north, differentiated by the uses that will be given to them and the density of buildings that each of the 3 spaces will have.
The south side of the island of Zorrotzaurre, will join the great Bilbao with the island by means of historical and modern buildings, considering this sector as one of the most built-up, this is the area where the headquarters of the BBK (Bilbao Bizkaia Kutxa) will be located, which today integrates together with Kutxa and Vital the Basque savings bank, Kutxabank.
The central area of the island of zorrotzaurre will be an area with large spaces, connected with others of the same characteristics on the other side of the estuary, such as the sarriko park and its university by means of bridges of modern designs. In this district will be located the sports center that will serve the demand for leisure and sport of the inhabitants of the island of zorrotzaurre.
The northern area will house the residential nucleus of the island. This area of the island will be connected to the two banks (San Ignacio and Zorrotza) by means of bridges.
The island will be full of structures that will link the island with its natural environment, the water, so we can find jetties for small boats in the northern and central areas of the island of Zorrotzaurre linked together by wooden walkways on the edge of the estuary.
The bridges: As we have already mentioned the island will be joined on both sides of the estuary by several bridges. Summarizing, we could say that 2 of them will link the island of Zorrotzaurre with Deusto, another 4 will link it with the neighborhoods of Sarriko and San Ignacio and another one will connect the island with Zorrotzaurre and Zorroza.
Public transport: The streetcar is the most important means of transport that will have access to the island of zorrotzaurre, the city council of Bilbao has decided to extend the streetcar route along the entire island.
The island of zorrotzaurre will have modern buildings and wide streets but always remembering the past of this area, that is why 14 emblematic or historical buildings of the area will endure in time, making clear the industrial history of the island in previous times.
A challenge of architecture and engineering for a city that adds and continues without stopping, becoming a European city without forgetting its culture and tradition.
