A unique and surprising experience. Gabriel, our host, welcomes us in his house in Zeanuri, in the heart of the Gorbeia Natural Park, with the aim of showing us the power of nature. Tradition, culture and history come together to teach us the basis of modern medicine. Medicinal plants spread through the Basque forests without most of us even knowing how to identify them. What a pity. But don&#8217;t worry, everything has a remedy. In our opinion, modern medicine has brought many improvements with respect to the home remedies that our ancestors prepared (we only need to look at the evolution of life expectancy in the Basque Country), but we must remember that these also had a great effectiveness. These plants, known as master plants (the most used herbs in our environment), help to fight pains and illnesses through different formats (syrups, oils, ointments&#8230;). The most interesting of all, is that these plants are very easy to find in our mountains, you just need to go out and get them. A rural space, which, located in the heart of the Arratia Valley, gives us some of the most beautiful landscapes of Euskadi. In this small corner of Euskal Herria we find a beautiful variety of experiences to carry out. All of them around forgotten, rural, cultural and historical trades. Highly recommended. The region of Arratia &#8211; Nerbioi, located in the geographical limits of the province of Bizkaia and formed by the towns of Arakaldo, Arantzazu, Artea, Areatza, Bedia, Galdakao, Otxandio, Orozko, Ubide and Zeanuri, offers us a great opportunity to disconnect from the daily routine and get away from the so hated stress. Although our activity takes place in the Ipi\u00f1aburu neighborhood, on the outskirts of the urban center, we must mention that Zeanuri also has an important historical heritage. Many of the people who shared our workshop got lost trying to get to the Ipi\u00f1aburu neighborhood of Zeanuri. Our recommendation is simple. Head towards Zeanuri, enter the village and follow the signs to the Ipi\u00f1aburu neighborhood around the Undurraga reservoir. We have tried to arrive with Google Maps indicating as destination Casa Rural Amalau and, although it takes us outside the village, towards Barazar, we ended up arriving at Gabriel&#8217;s house without any problem. But among all the things that nature has given us, often unnoticed are the plants that have helped us to cope with the pains caused by some of the most well-known diseases of the time. An aspect of nature to which we have much to thank. Before the existence of pharmacies, when people living in rural areas did not have access to medicines, our mountains and forests supplied them with plants that helped them cope with the various diseases they contracted. Nowadays, the ease of obtaining medicines has made this knowledge fall practically into oblivion. A fact, against which our today&#8217;s protagonist fights daily. We must keep in mind that these natural resources can be a very useful and valid option in case we do not have a pharmacy nearby. Wisdom does not take up space. An aspect of nature that few people value. A great connoisseur of nature who has written several books on this subject. A close and attentive person that gives an extra value to this experience. A great host. We recommend to ask him everything that comes to mind. Do not hold anything back. This herbologist, born in Andalusia, arrived when he was 2 years old in Larrabetzu, Bizkaia, where he lived most of his life until they moved to the Ipi\u00f1aburu neighborhood of Zeanuri. It is here, where they raised their 3 children and at the same time managed the agrotourism that they still run today. Gabriel has been studying the plants for more than 40 years and has been putting in value the remedies of our amamas and aitites. Now, after offering 20-hour courses during the summer and spring, he has launched to give workshops to all those who want to get in touch with medicinal plants. An experience managed by BasqueMountains, which has a great lover of the environment and the rural environment as its main attraction.
