The name of Miribilla comes from the mountain where this new city has been established, the original name of this mountain was Miravilla that after years of transformations has come to derive in Miribilla.

This Bilbaíno neighborhood limits to the north with Bilbao la Vieja (not to be confused with the old town of Bilbao) to the east with the great viaduct of Miraflores, to the south with the Bilbao neighborhood of San Adrian and to the west with the neighborhood of Zabala. As you can see all the neighborhoods bordering Miribilla have nothing to do with this new neighborhood, neighborhoods known in Bilbao for being immigrant neighborhoods.

Bilbao la vieja, one of the neighborhoods bordering miribilla, is nowadays an alternative area in the leisure sector, not only for bars and different restaurants but also for artists of all kinds who try to undertake their artistic careers among these streets. This type of people clashes with the type of people that during the nights alternate the typical san francisco street of Bilbao la vieja, it is easy to see prostitutes and drug addicts trying to achieve their daily goals.

The neighborhood of Miribilla began its journey in 1998, in this year was when the first works began to urbanize the area, although until 2 years later, in the year 2000, did not begin to build the houses that today house the highest birth rate per square meter of the entire Basque Country.

As we have already mentioned before the ground of Miribilla was in the past a source of wealth since it had a great iron beta, from Miribilla the ore wagons were transported to the estuary of Bilbao through the tunnels that linked the mine of San Luis to the estuary, today those tunnels are still preserved, One of them can be found at number 2 of the Marzana dock, hopefully in the future they will rehabilitate it and expose it to the Bilbaínos and anyone who wishes to visit it as a cultural and tourist purpose, so that everyone who visits Bilbao will be clear about the mining past of Greater Bilbao.

What to see: Miribilla is not a common tourist destination, but as everything in this life, the tourist tastes of our users are totally different from each other, so we suggest you some emblematic site of Miribilla in case you want to see it:

-Bilbao Arena (Palacio de Deportes de Bilbao), the current home ground of the city’s basketball team, Bilbao Basket, with a capacity for 10,000 spectators, has a sports center with swimming pools and gyms for all the new residents of Miribilla. Although like any large public space, the Bilbao arena not only hosts sporting events, it has also hosted major concerts and political events.

Bilbao Arena Miribilla

-Bizkaia Fronton: The Bizkaia fronton is located a few meters from the aforementioned Bilbao arena. With a capacity of 3,000 people, it is the largest fronton in the Basque Country, and in the same building we can find the offices of all the federations. We recommend visiting it when an important esku pilota (hand pelota) event is held, the atmosphere you will find will be simply incredible. If you do not have the opportunity to visit it in a big event, do not worry, the Bizkaia Fronton can be visited by guided tours.

Fronton Bizkaia

-Train elevator: This point is curious to say the least, it is the Miribilla train station, this station located 50 meters deep, is the deepest of the entire ADIF network. This train station was built taking advantage of the Bilbao-Castejón route that was already built and that passed under the ground of this neighborhood of Bilbao. The 6 panoramic elevators of this station have a capacity of 21 people each, and are able to travel the 50 meters deep in just 30 seconds. Like all the buildings in this neighborhood, the Miribilla station is a recent construction since it was inaugurated on December 18, 2008.

Miribilla Station

-Miribilla Park: This park has become an ideal place (along with artzanda or etxebarria park) to enjoy the fireworks of Bilbao’s big week due to its altitude and its views over Bilbao. With an extension of 50.000 square meters, this park borders with the previously mentioned neighborhood of Bilbao la vieja (san francisco street).

Where to eat: We recommend several restaurants where to eat in Miribilla, each of them has its own specialty:

Deluxe Restaurant: Known throughout Bilbao for the size of its dishes, the deluxe has become an emblem of Miribilla. We highlight the special dish, the cathedral, a giant hamburger of 4 kilos of meat.

Ohmelette: As its name suggests, this restaurant has a wide variety of omelettes, where you can choose your favorite omelette. If omelettes are not your thing, don’t worry, Ohmelette also offers good daily menus.

Bil & Boss: In this restaurant we can taste a good menu of day and a good bar of pintxos.

Jai Alai: This restaurant in Miribilla specializes in Italian cuisine, its pizzas are very famous in the neighborhood.

Pintxos: Some of the bars already mentioned in the section “where to eat” fit perfectly in this section of pintxos, so much so, that we return to quote some of them:

-Ohmelette: Tortilla pintxos bar.

-Jam: Specializing in Iberian meats, we must highlight the very competitive prices of this establishment as far as drinks are concerned.

-Artekari or Miribilla: These two establishments are located next to the Bizkaia fronton, their pintxo bar and the space they have around them make them perfect to go with children.

In this neighborhood as in many others also live important personalities of the Basque Country as the former lehendakari Francisco Lopez or the basketball coach Txus Bidorreta, and it is not surprising, Miribilla is a new neighborhood, modern, with lots of vitality, away from the bustle of downtown Bilbao but at the same time just 5 minutes walk from the old town of Bilbao.

We leave you a map to locate exactly the neighborhood of Miribilla:

We leave you a video as a summary of all the above:

Miribilla, the last great neighborhood of Bilbao.
